Slicker in Full Scotland Squad
Monday, 4th Nov 2024 11:26

Town keeper Cieran Slicker has been called into the full Scotland squad for the first time for their November Nations League matches, however, there is no place for George Hirst.

Slicker has won 19 U21s caps and skippered his side during their September games but this is the first time he has been included by first-team manager Steve Clarke.

The Scots host Croatia at Hampden Park on Friday 15th November, then travel to take on Poland in Warsaw on Monday 18th November.

Slicker seems unlikely to be involved in either game with Craig Gordon (Hearts) and Robby McCrorie (Kilmarnock) also named.

The 22-year-old recently signed a new contract with the Blues, which runs to the summer of 2028 having joined the Blues from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 and made two Carabao Cup appearances last season.

In the summer, Town considered sending the Manchester-born glovesman, who qualifies for Scotland via his father, out on loan but ultimately manager Kieran McKenna opted to keep him at Portman Road as third choice behind summer signing Aro Muric and Christian Walton.

Blues striker Hirst also qualifies for Scotland, in his case through his grandfather, but is yet to receive a call-up and last week said he was yet to be contacted.

George can count himself a tad unfortunate considering who else Scotland have available up front. A handful more appearances like at Brentford however will surely be enough to see him called up in the next break.. ?

Good to see. Preparing for the future, agreed George is very unfortunate, Dykes a league one player and shankland sitting second bottom of the SPL at hearts… easy being an armchair manager but Hirst scoring in the premier league, make it make sense. Scotland honestly don’t do themselves any favours.

Hirst is a very dubious Scot, qualifying through the absurd grandfather rule. The Scots didn't pick players on this basis, but I presume they will if they are better than what they have available. I'm glad Hirst hasn't been picked as I don;t want him injured, although he hasn't had much game time this season, thanks to the form of Delap.

Cieron will cement his position of Scotland's numbers for many years.

I'm a huge fan of Lawrence Shankland.

I strongly voiced my opinion on this last season.

I'd like to hear opinions from those with more knowledge of Scottish football than myself.

Worth signing?

More than a little surprising, but maybe not when the others in the squad are a 41 year old and a career backup keeper. The door is open.

Now let's do right by Ciaran and get him a nice loan spell in January.
