Fans React Angrily to Portman Road Parking Price Hike Wednesday, 27th Nov 2024 15:18 Town fans have reacted angrily to confirmation that matchday parking in Ipswich Borough Council’s car parks around Portman Road will increase in price to £15 from next week.
IBC had proposed the move in September and signs posted in the West End Road car park at Sunday’s game against Manchester United confirmed that the new price will be in operation from December 3rd when the Blues host Crystal Palace.
The five-hour price for the West End Road car park advertised on IBC’s website, which fans might have been paying on a matchday up to now, is £5.90, while the all-day charge is £7.
Councillor Jane Riley, IBC’s portfolio holder for culture and customers, outlined the reasons behind the price increase. “There is significant congestion in the area around the Portman Road stadium when there is a home match being played,” she told TWTD in a statement. “The new tariff of £15 on home match days only applies at our long stay car parks situated on Portman Road, Princes Street, and West End Road, for the period starting three hours before kick-off to one hour after kick-off. “Those prepared to pay the premium will have parking very close to the stadium while the charge may also encourage local fans to travel to games via other means such as park & ride, bus, cycling or walking. “Premium tariffs are common at car parks close to other Premier League grounds on home match days, with some venues charging up to £37 per day.”

Be honest! Don't use congestion as a reason, there's always congestion on a match day. Just pure profiteering. You'll just see more Mercedes and Jags in car park now.

Such a sudden change does have more than a whiff of profiteering, However, they are just following other clubs. Parking for Old Trafford is £14.50 per game.

Surely the point is these are not commercial car parks but already heavily subsidised by council tax Hopefully the younger generation have learnt what the older generation already know from past experience, Labour cannot be trusted with your money.

Pure greed from the incompetent and useless IBC. We have the eyes of the world looking at us and what have they done for the town since we were promoted to the Premier League…. nothing!! Take a look at the Sir Bobby Robson Bridge… it hasn’t been cleaned for years - total disrespect to the great man.We hear about endless projects in the town and nothing ever gets done! This car park charge is yet another slap in the face to the people of Ipswich and Suffolk.

Unfortunately whilst local councils are politcally charged nothing will change, just a bunch of ideology led incompetents. Councils should be independents only.

In the Robson era we had a top flight football team and a town centre full of big and small shops where you could spend hours. We have our top flight team back but I feel our town centre is lost forever. Having driven shoppers away our beloved council wants to stop football fans driving into town too. Come hell or high water the fans will get to the game but they won't hang around anymore.

This discussion has been really hostile so can I add a couple of counterpoints? First up, from what I see a large proportion of people using the car park are able bodied, so are undoubtedly contributing to congestion. I agree that Blue badge holders should get subsided priority Lastly there is little or no acknowledgement that the Council is near skint, not through their own doing, so of course they will be looking to raise revenue wherever they can. Personal insults of Councillors is not appropriate!

John4Bettina…Absolutely agree with you that central government has to take its share of the blame for the lack of council funding but to suggest local and county councils are blameless is ludicrous and naive. Doesn't matter what political party you're talking about, local and county councils up and down the land are well renowned for wasting money and then bleating about being skint. If councils were properly run with defined and co-ordinated leadership, the shortfalls would be less painful. Instead, in many cases, you have a hierarchy of jumped-up bureaucratic buffoons leading a bunch of ill-qualified power-trippers who probably got elected with less than a 1,000 votes in their local elections. And the end result of that is they'll always find money for a vanity project close to their hearts like a sculpture on a roundabout and then complain they haven't got any cash for the frontline services that really matter. Near me, Brighton’s Council is facing a £50million loss on a stupid and reckless loan they approved for the i360 viewing tower and that isn’t an isolated case up in this country. There are good councillors about and, more importantly, good council officers. Decent people who got into it with the right intentions. But sadly they appear to be few and far between. This hike in car park prices will just scratch the surface of any debt and, if you look closely at that debt, you'd probably be horrified to see where and how it has been accumulated. Councils can plead poverty but they need to look at themselves as well. But, as others have said on the subject, this rise is nothing to do with a moral crusade on congestion, it’s just pure greed and opportunism. If we were still in the Championship, would the hike have been as high? Thought not.

Truly blue, why do you have to bring politics into it? Do you honestly believe a Tory controlled council would be any better. Remember 14 years of corruption by a Tory government. The club & council seem to work amicably on most things for the benefit of the town but this is pure profiteering & whoever is in power is going to use the situation to their advantage.

If they want to charge £15 at least make the place decent, just look at the road surface full of potholes and uneven layering of the tarmac. Puddles everywhere when it rains the place is a dump!

We are lucky. Some grounds have no parking such as Brighton.

Where's the carrot here? I assume there'll be more buses and train? No? Oh.... just profiteering then
johnwarksshorts added 14:33 - Nov 28
Yes I agree, but in Brighton there are far more park and ride options

ashp19 You can make a Freedom of Information request for it in May: will be interesting to see the stats for August to November against Dec to March, and against last year's equivalent traffic. See where the 15 evidence points then...

That’s a steep hike, jumping from £5.90 or £7 to £15! Anything over £10 feels like they’re really pushing it. This is likely to stick in the minds of many Town fans when the next local elections come around. While some might have reluctantly accepted a price hike to £10, anything above that feels downright greedy.
