Wolves Boss O'Neil Sacked Sunday, 15th Dec 2024 11:43 Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has been sacked following the Blues’ 2-1 victory at Molineux yesterday.
O’Neil, 41, took charge of the Old Gold ahead of 2023/24 and led them to 14th in the Premier League.
However, having signed a new four-year deal in August, this season has been something of a disaster and the loss to the Blues was Wanderers’ fourth on the bounce with discipline within his squad also seemingly having broken down, his players having become involved in melees following yesterday’s game and the defeat at West Ham on Monday.
Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”
O’Neil pointed fingers towards his players for yesterday’s defeat in his post-match press conference last night having kept reporters waiting for more than an hour after the final whistle.
The sacking had been widely expected with many anticipating his firing earlier in the week after the loss to the Hammers.
One-time Norwich City midfielder O’Neil, who was previously in charge of AFC Bournemouth, leaves Wolves 19th in the table, three points behind the Blues and four off safety.
Vitor Pereira, currently in charge of Al-Shabab, is understood to be close to being named O’Neil’s successor.

Never like to see anyone get sacked, but sadly with there last 2 results and a couple of off field skirmishes owners had no choice really. Hope he can find a club with better owners.

Ole was there watching town. Don't think it was anything to do with Wolves job.

In the end his players showed a lack of respect for him acting like petulant school kids, embarrassing behaviour for last two matches. O Neil came across as a bad lover in his post match interview yesterday.....and was incorrect with analysis! Another reason for us Town fans to be grateful of super Kieran Mckenna who always comes across so well.

Tough gig for whoever takes over, particularly with the lack of disciple in the squad now; hopefully it will take a fair bit of time to sort it out, as we need to keep Wolves & Southampton below us, to concentrate on Leicester, Palace & Everton. I was so distraught by the Palace equaliser denying us the win last week, that I didn't give enough thought to the ramifications of them actually getting the winner, as it was 'only' another point dropped, at the time. Of course those extra 2 points that they got from it, are what is keeping us in the bottom 3 today. It's so vital to keep fighting to the end, each goal & each point is precious.

Sadly the merry-go-round goes on. Whether ex Budgie or whatever doesn't matter he's lost his job. Football is a cut throat sport. Someone has to finish top and some teams bottom three. No leeway seems to be given regarding how much the owners allow their managers in transfer fees. What restrictions are placed by fair play rules (unless you are mega rich and can instruct lawyers and make delaying tactics). No allowance made for injuries, suspensions or players just not putting it in for the manager. Sadly even someone as great as KM would come under pressure eventually, not this season or next if he's still with us. Which we sincerely hope is the case.

It was inevitable that he would lose his job after his post match comments about his own players. He was also disrespectful to us, implying that our only weapon was "booting the ball up to Delap" and to Liam himself, " he won't do that to any other Premier League defence". Actually He has bullied most of the centre backs he's faced this season. As others have said, it shows how lucky we are to have Kieran who would never criticise his players in public or disrespect an opponent.

Totally lost control of his players, so sacking inevitable. Also came across as a bit of a knob, so hey ho.

One of the only managers who are safe at the bottom is KmK. Thank goodness

Tbh we don't want any if the relegation teams sacking their manager and replacing them, due to the new manager bounce phenomenon. We want these teams to keep struggling.

Not much of a bounce for Leicester yesterday!

Apparently they had a lot of players out…. Maybe that might explain the heavy defeat?! Next week we have no recognised striker …. How much will that affect us I wonder?

The typos are funny on here... reading through the comments not only was the Wolves manager a bad lover but also he didn't have a disciple in the squad... COYB

All he seemed to do was moan about the quality of his squad and throw his players under the bus. Six of our starters were playing in League One less than two years ago, whilst he had a £50m striker and a right back that they bought from Barcelona for £30m.

There are no complaints about budget and injuries when you play ITFC. There is definitely something wrong with the team spirit at Wolves and it must have been difficult to manage in an unsupportive environment. We were there for the taking if Wolves had the whole club pulling in the right direction. KM gets more than the sum of the parts of the squad whereas O'neil was getting less. It's really annoying that his team is getting in fights with people and getting Liam Delap banned for the next match.
