Godfrey Medical Completed Saturday, 4th Jan 2025 18:04 Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey is reported to have completed his Town medical with the loan deal looking set to be confirmed within the next couple of days.
Italian reports earlier today indicated the switch was well down the line and it’s understood the 26-year-old was at Playford Road this afternoon.
According to Sky Sports, Godfrey has had his medical with all parties hoping to complete the move in the next 24-48 hours.
Godfrey, who plays at centre-half or right-back, joined Atalanta for £11 million in the summer but has made only one appearance in Serie A and a return to England had been expected with Tottenham, Leeds, Wolves and Nottingham Forest among the other clubs linked. Town are understood to be the only side to have made a concrete offer.
York-born Godfrey started his senior career with his hometown club, having spent time as a youth player at Middlesbrough, before moving on to Norwich City, with whom he won the Championship title in 2018/19 having spent time on loan at Shrewsbury.
In the summer of 2020 he moved on to Everton and during his spell at Goodison Park he won two full England caps, adding to appearances at U20 and U21 levels.
Town have always seemed likely to be in the market for a player in the mould of Godfrey in this transfer window to compete for Axel Tuanzebe’s right-sided defensive role.
An overseas loan doesn’t count towards the two player limit in the Premier League, which affects only domestic loans.

Maybe homegrown means UK actually, my bad.

Jack Clarke was an out-and-out LW for Sunderland and was brilliant at it. He won't get many chances to do that here unless Davis gets injured or banned. Godfrey can offer cover at LB to give us that option. Similarly on the right in the absence of Tuanzebe. He can also operate as a CB in a 3 or 4. KMcK likes versatility in a player so this works (hopefully). Does anyone remember Conor Townsend? He'll do a great Job for someone.

He’s played more at left back than right back so I’m confused as to whom he would replace.

Long and wordy, hallucinating it's all pathetic, well shall we sign nobody, send Phillips and Cajuste back, sell Delap, Muric, Hutchinson, Szmodick, Greaves etc and stay sentimental and tomorrow we can go with - Walton H Clarke Burgess Woofeden Davis Morsy Luongo Taylor Burns Chaplin Broadhead Keep the ones who live I the past happy, recall Harness and have Al-Hamadi on bench and just get maybe Will Keane and Jack Marriott back, let Mckenna go and get Ian Holloway or Wayne Rooney in and get back to league one ASAP so you can pack out Portman Road as you did in League One and watch all your faves win games? This forum is so strange and abusive to people, typical Ipswich people stuck in their ways with their comfort blanket players, want everything, demand everything but with players who have been here since League One, bully signings online and Mark down when people ask genuine football questions about our team and staying in Premiership. No ambition whatsoever by many armchair fans or people who have a Wes Burns autograph. The fact is like it or not we can only have 25 in squad and want to stay in Prem and bring in players tgat Kmck and MA think will help us do that and that as our manager said means players going, so take a look at our current squad and look who you think is going, it's pretty obvious! This is not a forum for nastiness, merely debate and opinion not being personal or nasty when you see something you don't like or agree with. Was 2 questions who will be sold or l9aned and what 3 teams you think go down, some great answers and opinions and some still stuck in Morecambe! COYB

Its nice when you have home grown players but its not essential, fact is the players need to be up to task, Imo its daft saying we must and equaly daft is not wanting players with past connections to .Norwich. .We need the best we can get. Mc Kenna knows who he needs Ashton is good at doing the deal let them do there jobs, COYB

No way should Taylor go. He's been excellent. Chaplin has made a difference in recent games and we look so much better when he's the third "10". Hutchinson can't play there. Harry out on a loan, Woolfie continues to defy his critics (including me), so who knows. Perhaps Massimo and Burns to go? Burns was excellent against Chelsea mind. Glad I'm not the manager!!!!

Speculating can be fun but we’d probably all be better off relaxing and waiting…. That said no harm done by having a few thoughts so…. Firstly I think we need keep in mind how important team culture, spirit and togetherness are to KM. You can only add so many new players at a time without risking this (esp in January) and we already added 12 in the summer. So my guess is we’re more likely to see 3-4 new entrants now than 4-5. To enable this we will have to sell loan or deregister a few but with Ogbene out all season anyway, we may only need to dereg one or two others. There is talk that Ali needs an op, perhaps explaining why we’ve not seen the best of him. If so and depending how long his recuperation is likely to take, he could be de-reg (assuming we get a striker replacement). If he does get fit he could possibly go to a pre-agreed loan. That may leave only one position to open up. Anyway none of us saw Ben Godfrey on the radar and I’ll bet the next moves, in or out, will also surprise from left (or right….) field

H Clarke(loan) Townsend(transfer) Luongo(transfer) Al Hamadi(loan) if we get suitable reinforcements in! Wouldnt surprise me and i say this with my sentimental hat on Chaplin, i have been quite surprised at how well he has done, however is very very lightweight. And an obvious one is Ogbene removed vfrom the squad. The January window is very tough but i get the feeling we will have been working on it since the last one closed, last 2 seasons the signings have really helped us over the line!

Got Godfrey in now need Jones ( Curtis) Walker (Kyle) Wilson (Harry) Fraser ( Ryan) and we could run out to the Dad's Army theme. As we found out recently these " big" teams like Chelsea" don't like it up em" and now's the time not to panic.

TbfHarry Clarke has been excellent when he’s playing with a decent right sided midfielder but Burns offers him little or no protection. That said he was better against Chelsea. Upgrade required.

Calm down everyone. Godfrey can be accommodated by de-registering Ogbene. Assuming Al-Hamadi goes out on loan, which we all probably think will benefit him that’s another squad space available. I think we are aiming for 3 signings at the most so perhaps one other player is sold or loaned out. Maybe that’s H Clarke, but Massimo isn’t going to get many minutes either…I think H Clarke has had a couple of encouraging performances, so giving up on him makes little sense to me. There is no prospect of a large exodus. Two players maximum plus ogbene de-registered.

I've never understood the desire for wholesale changes. Especially with the KMcK reputation of improving players. There were a lot of changes on the summer and the best needs to be found from the Team, who have been doing well but suffered from the fine margins in a competitive league.
