Town Turn Down Boro Edmundson Bid
Tuesday, 14th Jan 2025 15:32

Town have turned down a Middlesbrough bid for centre-half George Edmundson, who is currently on a season-long loan with the Teessiders.

The 27-year-old joined Boro on loan in the summer window and has impressed for the Championship’s fifth-placed side, making 20 starts and scoring once.

Edmundson’s performances for Michael Carrick’s side have also caught the eye of a number of other Championship teams but the defender cannot play for a third club this season, having featured as a brief sub for the Blues away against his hometown club Manchester City in August.

Boro are keen to head off any potential summer interest from elsewhere by trying to make his loan move permanent during this window.

But, as per reports elsewhere, the Blues have turned down an offer, which TWTD understands to have been £350,000 now, a further £350,000 if Boro are promoted plus add-ons.

Edmundson is out of contract at the end of the season when he would be able to leave on a free transfer.

The ex-Oldham defender joined Town for around £1 million from Rangers in the summer of 2021, signing a four-year deal.

@tractorboy in HK and @blues1 - he has obviously done well at Boro which is why they want to sign him. 350k is a low offer. Mark Ashton will negotiate better than that. If Jacob Greaves is worth 15 million or whatever we paid for him George has to be worth more than 2.3% of that figure ?

I’d probably say say 700k +300k if promoted is fair deal

Those, saying we should just keep him. You do realise we habe to move players on to be able to sign players ourselves and not break the psr rules. I agree hes, worth more than £350,000, but if they do go up then personally think the extra taking it up to £700,000 would be about right. Would maybe tell boro we want £500k up front then £250k if promoted. Whatever tho, we shouldn't be allowing his contract to run out and end up with nothing in the summer.

Blues1 were nowhere near having to worry about psr and pretty sure 350,000 isn’t going to make a lot of difference. He’s been the backbone of their side this season so that offer IS insulting and they have no chance of going up there are way better sides so forget that as an add on

@Billericay12 I get it, but if we turn down all offers he can simply sign with Boro (or anyone else) in the summer and we get nothing. We'd be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

But the fact we turned down the offer may indicate there's a club option.

I don't pretend to know much, or anything, about how these deals are done. But if I were the seller in this case, I wouldn't be happy with the "+350k if promoted" bit. Boro are going to have to meet a lot of difficult challenges at the top of the Championship if they are to get over that hurdle. I can't see Boro as promotion favourites.

*Sorry: "If I were the BUYER in this case..." of course...

Interesting debate this one. He seems to have been central to their efforts this season and surely they'd miss him if he was recalled. I would imagine if the boot was on the other foot and we had a loanee mainstay centre back who was the backbone of our promotion-pushing defence, we'd want to keep him for the second half of the season.
That must be leverage in itself. Really interestingly, if we did take him back (assuming we have no option for another year but do have a break-clause) then he'd not get registered and would have to wait until summer - because he was given some minutes against City (which were given to him in recognition of his efforts and feelings about them). So we'd be being unsentimental about him now having been perhaps too sentimental earlier in the season. As others have said, wages are a factor and it would be good to get them off the books as well as ROI for initial cost and we don't have visibility of these calculations. Just gotta trust MA etc. I definitely wish him well in his career and certainly think he can be a real leader at Champ level and potentially a Prem CB in his prime (which he's only now starting to reach).

I’ve been very impressed with Edmundson this season when I’ve watched Boro. Unfortunately we are in a difficult position with his contract running down. I think I might try bring Doak into the conversation albeit he’s a Liverpool player.
