Edmundson Fee and Personal Terms Agreed
Thursday, 23rd Jan 2025 23:41

Town and Middlesbrough have agreed a fee for the permanent transfer of central defender George Edmundson, who is set to join the Championship side on a two-and-a-half-year deal, TWTD understands.

As previously reported, the 27-year-old was the subject of two failed bids from Boro, where he has been on loan since August with the Blues activating a recall clause earlier in the week.

The two parties continued discussions, however, and a deal has been agreed with the Blues set to receive £600,000 plus further top-ups, some shorter term, then £350,000 if Boro are promoted and a further £500,000 if they then stay up.

We understand Edmundson has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Teessiders, who are managed by Blues boss Kieran McKenna’s close friend Michael Carrick. His signing looks set to be confirmed on Friday.

Edmundson was out of contract with Town at the end of the season when he would have been able to leave on a free transfer. As he had played for both the Blues and Boro this season, he could only have moved to the Riverside during this window.

The ex-Oldham defender joined Town for around £1 million from Rangers in the summer of 2021, signing a four-year deal.

In total, he made 71 starts and four sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring once, and was a member of the squad which won back-to-back promotions.

Was hoping we might at least be able to recoup what we paid for him, but I guess with his contract expiring and him being limited to only playing for us an Boro, something is better than nothing.

Thank you George for your contribution to the journey. Best of luck at Boro, and who knows, maybe we'll be seeing you at Portman Road soon, one way or another!

The player is happy there and it’s best for everyone that his future is settled in the right way. Ok, we’ve lost a little bit of money on him, but given he was in free transfer territory at the end of the season, it’s better to take some sort of fee now.

George has been good for the club and I wish him well.

Early season sentimentality just cost us around 500k-1 million quid. Good luck Fridge......you'll always be remembered fondly and welcomed at Portman Road.

Good luck, George. A very solid player for us and never let us down. Boro are getting a good deal. At only 27, plenty of time to make some more career memories.

This just simply had to happen. The alternative of him sitting around ITFC doing nothing and being paid his wages was a farcical idea.
I’m surprised anyone thought that situation could actually happen.
Not only that, but it would have been very detrimental to Edmundson’s career.
Yes, to a point, Middlesbrough appeared to have Town over a barrel on this one, but Edmundson was a great servant to this club, so he deserved the break.

Given he could only go to one club and was out of contract MA has worked a miracle to get a decent fee

Good player, great character, one of the early legends

The deal must be slightly better than the original fee offered and seeing as George is now way down the pecking order it makes sense for all parties. Good luck George, may the rest of your career be a success.

All the best George. Hopefully see you in the Premier League against us next season (beating Leeds in the play-off final please). McKenna giving you that cameo against Man City was pure class. Wherever your career goes, you can always say you were a Premier League player.

Lost money and strengthened one of our likely competitors for next season, but yet people call it a master class.

Bluewhiteboy. Stop talking rubbish. Of course it's a good deal. He'd have walked away for nothing at the end of the season. And bcse boro was the only team he could have gone to and played, this deal makes common sense.
