Ipswich Town 1-2 Southampton - Match Report
Saturday, 1st Feb 2025 17:11

Town’s hopes of staying in the Premier League suffered a significant blow after they were defeated 2-1 at Portman Road by rock-bottom Southampton, the Saints’ first away league win this season and only their second in the league. Joe Aribo gave the visitors the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute but Liam Delap levelled for the Blues 10 minutes later with his ninth of the season. Town had a number of chances to go in front but were unable to take them and were made to pay three minutes from time when Paul Onuachu stabbed home a rebound.

The Blues made four changes from the team which lost 4-1 at Liverpool last week with Aro Muric, Jens Cajuste and Nathan Broadhead returning to the XI and Julio Enciso making his full debut.

Muric took over in goal from Christian Walton, who suffered a groin injury at Anfield last week having started the last five matches, with Cieran Slicker the sub keeper.

Cajuste came back into central midfield alongside skipper Sam Morsy, who was making his 150th start for the club, with Kalvin Phillips on the bench.

Ensico, who came off the bench at Liverpool last week and whose corner led to Jacob Greaves’s late goal, was in the centre of the three behind Liam Delap with Omari Hutchinson on the right and Nathan Broadhead on the left.

Ben Johnson and Jaden Philogene were among the subs having started last week, while Wes Burns is out for the season having suffered an ACL injury.

Southampton gave debuts to January signings Welington, a Brazilian left-back, and Danish international midfielder Albert Gronbaek, while England keeper Aaron Ramsdale was back in goal with ex-Blues loanee Alex McCarthy dropping to the bench.

Another former loanee, James Bree, started for the Saints, but there was no place for Flynn Downes in the squad. Jack Stephens, Tyler Dibling and Kamaldeen Sulemana were all on the bench after returning from injury.

The Blues started on the front foot with Enciso and Delap both involved and on five the Paraguayan international won a corner on the left with a shot which deflected wide. The on-loan Brighton man took the flag-kick himself, Dara O’Shea heading back from deep but Saints keeper Ramsdale claimed the looping ball.

Town continued to see all the ball with the visitors struggling to get out of their half, Taylor Harwood-Bellis passing twice passing straight out of play under no pressure.

On 10, the busy Enciso shot low to Ramsdale’s left after winning the ball back not far outside the area but the keeper was able to save with little fanfare.

The Blues had maintained their dominance and Southampton had shown virtually nothing as an attacking force but on 21 the visitors went in front.

Kyle Walker-Peters was given space on the right and played a ball ahead for Mateus Fernandes. Greaves’s heel diverted Fernandes’s cross to Joe Aribo on the penalty spot and the Nigeria international hit a shot towards goal which Muric bundled into the net with his right hand. That the keeper felt he should have done better was clear from his reaction.

Town set about getting back on terms, Hutchinson making a burst towards the area before being felled by Harwood-Bellis only for referee Michael Oliver to wave away the protests, much to the annoyance of the home support.

On 24, Hutchinson sent over a ball from the right, Broadhead nodded down and Delap hooked the ball only just over.

As the game approached the half hour, Enciso broke past a number of Southampton players before feeding Leif Davis, whose cross clearly struck Walker-Peters on an outstretched arm. Referee Oliver again irked the Town fans by waving away protests and VAR evidently agreed with him.

But the Blues support didn’t have to wait too much longer for an equaliser. In the 31st minute, Broadhead dug out a pass on halfway, Delap’s pace saw him beat Saints skipper Jan Bednarek to the ball and through one-on-one with Ramsdale, who he confidently beat to his left.

Delap’s ninth goal for the Blues lifted the roof off a previously nervous and frustrated Portman Road, but was well deserved on the balance of the game.

Two minutes after levelling, Town should have gone in front. Delap sent Broadhead away towards the left and the Wales international took it on into the area before attempting to chip Ramsdale, who saved with his chest. The loose ball fell back to Broadhead at a tight angle but he was unable to make anything of the second opportunity.

Southampton created a chance in the 36th minute, Welington crossing and 6ft 7in tall striker Onuachu nodded straight at Muric, who claimed.

Four minutes later, there was a huge cheer from the Town support after referee Oliver showed the game’s first yellow card to Welington for a foul on Axel Tuanzebe not far outside the area, a number of earlier caution-worthy challenges from Saints players having gone unpunished.

Enciso took the free-kick and sent a low effort past the wall to the right but into the side-netting.

On 44, Cajuste did well to clear the danger with Fernandes threatening to find a way through the Town backline.

A minute later, Morsy sent Hutchinson away on the right, the former Chelsea man cutting in but shooting straight at Ramsdale.

Two minutes into three additional minutes, the Blues should have taken the lead. Hutchinson crossed from the right, the ball reached Broadhead, who took too many touches before hitting a shot which was blocked. A first-time strike would probably have seen the Wales international, who was only eight yards out, celebrating his first Premier League goal.

That was the last action of a half which the Blues had controlled throughout aside from a couple of Southampton attacks.

Town had started positively, with the enthusiastic Enciso causing the visitors plenty of problems, although without creating any serious chances, before the Saints scored via their first attack, a goal which the Blues defence and keeper Muric won’t want to watch back.

As has so often been the case under Kieran McKenna’s management, going behind didn’t appear to impact Town too much and it took only 10 minutes for the equaliser, created well by Broadhead and finished confidently by Delap.

From there, the Broadhead had had two chances to put his side in front but perhaps showed his lack of recent goals with his finishes.

The visitors made a change ahead of the second half, Harwood-Bellis, who had looked out of sorts throughout the first period and had picked up a knock towards the end, making way for club captain Stephens, returning to the team for the first time since December 4th.

In the 53rd minute, Delap was blocked off by Bednarek inside the box, the Town striker claiming a penalty but referee Oliver showing no interest.

The former Manchester City man was still down in the area holding his face as play continued with the Blues still in possession. Eventually, with Delap now on his feet, Hutchinson played a pass across the edge of the area to Davis, who laid back to Cajuste, but the Swedish international’s shot flew well over.

Visitors’ half-time sub Stephens lasted only 11 minutes, taking his leave on 56 having picked up a niggle and Will Smallbone taking over.

Just before the hour, Enciso went close to putting Town in front. Greaves nodded Cajuste’s long throw from the left back from the near post and Delap stabbed it out to the Paraguayan, whose effort wafted just past the angle of post and bar.

Southampton subsequently had a spell on the ball, Bree shooting wide from the edge off Davis.

From the corner, the ball found Aribo in space but the midfielder sent the ball well wide, the ball almost falling for a teammate on the byline to the left before the danger was cleared.

The Blues broke immediately through Ensico and Hutchinson, the latter crossing for Broadhead but the Wales international couldn’t get it under control and the ball bounced through to Ramsdale. That was Broadhead’s last involvement with Philogene taking over.

In the 65th minute, Delap brought the ball in from the left before mis-hitting a shot well wide. Five minutes later, the visitors swapped debutant Gronbaek for Sulemana.

On 71, Delap muscled his way around the outside of Bednarek before shooting from a tight angle when there were options in the middle and Ramsdale saved.

Moments later, Cajuste was sent flying in the middle 10 yards outside the area. Morsy took a quick free-kick, Bednarek clattered into Delap as the Town striker turned, but the Blues kept playing and Enciso’s shot failed to trouble Ramsdale.

Bednarek was eventually booked in the 74th minute for hauling over Delap five yards outside the area. Davis’s free-kick struck the top of the wall.

Town were by now completely dominant, Davis crossing from the left and then Philogene from the right with the Blues encamped in the Saints half.

The Blues swapped Cajuste, again one of Town’s key men, for Jack Taylor, before there was a hold-up in play as Ramsdale was treated.

Soon after, Sulemana made a pacy run into the area on the left but Tuanzebe kept up with him and forced him off the ball.

Welington underwent treatment and eventually made way for Yukinari Sugawara with Lesley Ugochukwu also coming off and Adam Lallana, who played for the Saints U18s in the 2005 FA Youth Cup final at Portman Road as the Blues won the trophy, took over.

Town’s impetus had been halted by all the stoppages and they were struggling to put attacks together and in the 87th minute the Saints went back in front.

Aribo fed Sulimana down the left, the sub cutting in and hitting a low shot which Muric saved down to his right. However, the Kosovan keeper could only palm it out and Onuachu beat Greaves to the loose ball and stabbed into the net to send the away fans to his left into raptures.

Town swapped Enciso and Davis for George Hirst and Jack Clarke for the final three scheduled minutes plus eight in additional time.

The Blues huffed and puffed in the closing minutes but without creating a significant opportunity and it was the visitors’ fans cheering at the whistle and muted boos from the Town supporters.

A big blow for the Blues as they battle relegation with the games against those around them towards the bottom of the division matches which it is far more important to win than those against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, who beat them in previous weeks.

Town will rue missing opportunities in the first half, the otherwise excellent Broadhead having two chances that he probably would have taken in his pomp in the last two seasons, while Enciso and Delap may feel they should have done better with second half opportunities, although Ramsdale wasn’t as tested as he should have been after the break.

Enciso, Hutchinson and Philogene after he came on caused problems with their running with the ball but all too often kept hold of it too long when they might have moved it on to teammates.

Southampton, whose last away win was at Leeds in the Championship in May and whose manager Ivan Juric is celebrating his first Premier League win, had one real chance in each half and scored from both of them with questions regarding the returning Muric on each of them, although Town never looked entirely comfortable at the back.

The result makes little difference to the Blues’ position as it stands, Leicester having lost 4-0 at Everton and Wolves in action at Villa later this evening, but losing to Southampton, who remain seven points behind second-bottom Town is a big blow both in terms of failing to take points and also psychologically.

Town: Muric, Tuanzebe, O’Shea, Greaves, Davis (J Clarke 87), Morsy (c), Cajuste (Taylor 77), Hutchinson, Enciso (Hirst 87), Broadhead (Philogene 64), Delap. Unused: Slicker, Johnson, Godfrey, Townsend, Phillips.

Southampton: Ramsdale, Walker-Peters, Harwood-Bellis (Stephens 46 (Smallbone 56)), Aribo, Bree, Fernandes, Ugochukwu (Lallana 82), Gronbaek (Sulemana 70), Onuachu, Welington (Sugawara 82), Bednarek (c). Some supporters on here are an absolute disgrace with no idea about the team they supposedly support, the long term plans in place.

Head in clouds alot of you, its funny you never say who should go down instead of us? If we go down it could end up being the best thing for the club!
Sheff Utd and Boro using our blueprint now buying best of Championship who are youthful to create a squad far too good for Championship but not quite ready for Prem. Most teams have gone down before establishing, Brighton, Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Villa all of them.

If Premier League wad a Monopoly board Liverpool & Man City are Park Lane and Matfair and we have just passed go with the chance to build.
And likewise if we go down we will be the Mayfair of Championship.

The money from going up has transformed stadium to Prem quality, bought in young players with quality, we have the England U21 front line.

The Band Of Brothers are now Dad's Army and not Premiership quality if they were they would of been signed to the Prem before Mckenna has been overly faithful to some of them.
What team in Championship wouldn't want Szmodicks, J Clarke, delap, Greaves, Philogene,Hutchinson etc but
Some fans don't rate them.

Some think they will all go in Summer, they won't, they came to Ipswich to be part of the project and play and learn and if we go down the spirit will build like Dad's Army did before them.
We have H Clarke to come back, Cameron Humphreys, even Hamadi scored today.
If a team wants to pay 60 mill for Delap I'd take it, a 40 million profit in less than year for an unproven player.
Adebayo scored 10 last season for Luton and he still there (my tip to sign for Town by Monday)
Wouldn't you like to see a new team with those players tearing up Championship and getting better together than a relegation battle and losing every week?

We have been really astute in signings with future in mind, the owners, chairman and manager will be fully prepared for relegation as will the players, if we get 17th great but if we do go down, we will be better for it and financially sound.

The gulf between top of Prem and bottom is too big now and all money led.

Muric is not tenable now and its fans fault his confidence is gone, if 10 people stood behind you at work and booed you and said your rubbish then anyone's confidence be shattered, he has been treated appallingly by the fans and we are meant to be a family club.

And booing our own players at the end of game, slating Mckenna etc, it's shameful, would you prefer watching Dad's Army in Fleetwood than a trip to Villa Park.

Stop living in history the future of Ipswich Town and stability is now bright, we wouldn't imagine this 2 years ago
It's a team game, be nice, love the team and stop nonsense posts moaning, lost to Southampton but be Chelsea, whatever its football, they have Newcastle tough game last week!

Just watching a recoding on YouTube of TownTV matchday preview and the presenter, James Kirtland, said "Muric is a top class keeper and no doubt will do a top class job today". What an absolute idiot. He has no clue. TownTV needs to get presenters who know what they are talking about.

One player has cost us relegation - Muric
It's too late already. No idea what McKenna saw in him, its been a huge error........

Leejames99 I have defended you in the past, but who are you to tell other fans how to be?

Just because people voice their opinions that some fans may not agree with and they have every right to I might add, it doesn’t make fans better than others.

There seem to be some fans that think they are above others on here and think their opinion matters more.

Muric is not a good keeper and I would like to point out that I said he was not a good signing from the get go. It’s not a confidence issue, he just isn’t very good. A decent keeper doesn’t get dropped, simple as that. He is on par with Taibi (ex Man Utd keeper),Sereni and Karius who were dreadful.

People so quick to blame Muric. But we’re going to concede goals most games whoever is in the stick. The problem is goal scored. We should be scoring more than 1 against Southampton. More than 0 at home v Brighton, and so on

LeeJames99 do you honestly think the players will want to stay if we get relegated. They will have tasted the Premier League, got paid Premier League wages and if they get relegated would have wage cuts to Championship level wages.

Get over this really stupid obsession of a dream you have of us getting relegated and walking the Championship and getting promoted back again the following season.

You are a fool. You know nothing about football.

@leejames99 - I don't always agree with you as you know, but speaking some sense there. We'll have to agree to disagree on Morsy, as I still think he's the driving force of the team, and provides the bridge between the defence and attack. I didn't see much wrong from him again today and Cajuste was having another super solid game when he came off.

If we'd scored that second goal instead of Southampton everyone would be praising the touches of Enciso, the runs of Omari, and the menace of Delap.

We have bought decent players. Omari is a great player to bring in...Philogene will be his little buddy, but needs time to bed in and get his confidence after the past 6 months at Villa (fans are giving him extra grief because of the stretched out transfer saga), and Jack Clarke has got some great skills in his locker, but has to learn the defence part of the game to usurp Szmodics as a starter. They've not been Premiership players before because it's a big step up, but the reason we have to pay £15-20 million for these players is they are young, british and have a future. As you say having Delap, Philogene and Omari are great signing for the future and the team that we'll have at our disposal next season. If we can get some wins to beat the drop great, but we've had one eye on building for the future and what happens if we do go down, to give us the best chance of returning within 3 years.

We played a back four today. We went for it more. With that being the case there comes the great risk of being caught on the break. Maybe we should have stuck with 3 CB's today and not changed things around too much, but McKenna wanted the win and wanted us to play on the front foot. Leif saw lots of the ball. Omari saw lots of the ball, and we should and could easily have been going in 3-1 at half time having put the game to bed.

Southampton were time wasting and breaking up the game to hobble over the line with a draw. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they were actually going to win the thing, but playing a back for and attacking as much as we were always leaves a chance of a team getting something on the break. That's when you need the defenders to be bang on it, and a keeper to have a safe pair of hands. Muric sadly had to come back in when it would always have been Walton starting today if fit, and maybe McKenna should have reverted to the 3 CB's knowing Muric would need the protection as he's a muppet.

We were the team trying to win the game. The crowd were angsty because we were only drawing when we were clearly the dominant team and we got sucker punched. It happens. It's rubbish. it's that feeling from the Leicester game again when we've been the best team and things go against us. We played well enough to win the game. We took the risks and lost it. Players could have kept their heads better though and not resorted to trying to take the defence on all by themselves. Delap was as much of a culprit of that as Enciso and others.

We are all sore, because when we calmed down we were the better team, and the annoyance is that it's three points that we actually deserved, but gifted to a poor Southampton team. Ramsdale was laughing his head off when they scored. He couldn't see it coming. It was a massive bonus.

We got the rub of the green last season when they played us off the park, and Sarmiento bailed us out to help us get promoted. We got a late goal through Morsy at their place. Unfortunately the gods of luck, choose to swing one back in their favour today, which is a right pain in the aaaarrrrse!

Let's go and get a draw at Villa and beat Spurs and Man Utd.

This season isn't over, even if it's looking like it may be a tough assignment.

There are plenty of reasons to be cheerful (if not tonight)

I never said people can't have opinions every one should absolutely, but you just contradicted yourself by saying Muric is not a good keeper as though it's facts not opinion.
How can he not be a good keeper, he was Championship keeper of season, came through the Man City Academy, is a Bosnian International number 1 who save a H Kane pen, on loan at Forest etc.
He is just being made the scapegoat which isn't right, we conceded 10 goals in 2 games with Walton but that's okay because it's Liverpool or Man City, yet with Muric in goal we only conceded 1 vs Arsenal. He is not to blame for all the points lost, he is at fault for 9 goals now in 2 seasons, Pickford is 20, Ramsdale 8 etc.
Morsy has been main culprit for points, trip vs Leicester, Penalty Fulham etc
It's not worked out for him here so far it happens but to solely blame him for today and other losses is not okay, he has 10 players in front of him! Its just nobody will blame the Dads Army players.
Thats all, at least I write thought out factual, appropriate opinions and dont turn on the nastiness. Its a team game.
If you think Muric awful thats your opinion, I don't think he has settled here but I don't think the fans have given him a chance because they all crying to get the league 1 keeper Walton in.
Anyone who dares to say Dad's Army aren't Prem good enough gets insults.
We need a new keeper all together really with Nick Pope or Kellhner the obvious choices.
Thanks for post though, like a debate

Robsonwark - Shows how little you know about football, what world do you live in?
Do you think Hutchinson, Philligene, Delap, Greaves etc said yeah yeah we will come to Ipswich who are the favourites to go down, you can pay millions for me but if we do go down its got nothing to do with me and I'm going to go to sheff Utd or Burnley?
They have all signed l9ng term contracts, there will definately not be relegation clauses in their contracts, they are IpswichbTown players and therefore only get sold if the club want them to go or stupid offer comes in.
You know nothing about football obviously kept shouting for a league 1 keeper to come in who let loads in handful of games, football is TEAM game.
It's not a dream that they go down and won't go back up, why wouldn't they, we are completely different to Luton. So in your opinion if we go down, all the new signings are sold, Dad's Army stats and we become a mediocre team? So it's Prem or nothing for you?
Walton or nobody?
Need a reality check mate

Just going to point out one thing - it’s easy to be crowned Championship keeper of the season when Burnley demolished the league that season.

It doesn’t necessary tell the full story.

Marinersnose added 21:37 - Feb 1
Well for me Ipswich haven’t recovered from the home defeat against Brighton. We were so poor on that occasion and the team hasn’t managed to recover or find any form . For Ipswich to be in a position where we haven’t got quality Goalkeepers is beyond me. This is a key position in any team and we haven’t got a decent number one. Saints sign Ramsdsle for £25m . I’d sell Clarke and Philogene and buy a proper keeper. I’d also critically review our scouting system.
Midfield was a yard slow today and after Phillips decent performance at Anfield I felt he’d start today but alas it wasn’t to be. Wolves with an excellent win so for me the same three that came up are going down. Hopefully we can get a decent cup run.

Thanks so much for great post, it's fine to agree or disagree that's the whole point, that was a nice concise post with valid points.
I look at the bigger picture as does the owners, manager, chairman and players.
I've loved Morsy, what a legend, and he did okay in bits but for me midfielders just glide past him, he hasn't got the pace for Prem and just to me seems a bit confused all the time, he runs and points alot, I've also noticed he doesn't go in for tackles like he did, he was our most aggressive mid by far and I think its because he doesn't want to get a yellow again and get suspended as his place would go. Can't knock his commitment though.

Everyone beats everyone in this league scores are so unpredictable, I know from my accas lol.
Let's see where season takes us but I won't be stressing if we are relegated and look at the experience the players got this year, the hunger to get back, lovely stadium etc and we are sticking with the project and Mckenna.
Do think some more signings will arrive including a goalkeeper maybe but maybe he will try Slicker, sometimes the rookies take their chance.
Need a tough experienced midfielder, wouldn't mind Oxelainde Chamberlain, I have feeling we may go for Adebayo too but Monday will be interesting.
Thanks again

LeeJames99 everyone on this site, apart from you, knows that we are where we are because of the clown that is Muric. If Walton, "League 1 keeper" as you call him, had been in goal all season we would be much higher up the table.

Have you ever actually watched any games this season or do you only rely on stats?

Leejames99: you comment on the contents of player contracts. However, the only way that you can know what is in those contracts is if you have read them. Hence there are two possibilities:

1) you have not read the contracts, you do not know what is in them and are just making it up,

2) you have read them, perhaps because you are a senior Club official or a professional representative of the players. If this is the case then you are behaving improperly by passing public comment on them.

Awful isn't he!!!
Muric has been at fault for 7 goals out of 31 he has conceded including today so who is responsible for the other 24?..
Walton has conceded 16 in 6 games!
I do like stats because they show the fact from the fiction.
Perhaps if we got off muric he will deliver like he did in video I've sent, enjoy!

Everybody seems to blame Muric for this game, I can agree that it would be possible to save the goals, but the reason why Southampton get the chance to score is really poor defending and errors from defence/midfield. The first goal we have 3 guys pressuring the ball on the wing, we are 8 (9 w Muric) men against their 6 and Morsy leaves Aribo all alone - when he gets the reflected ball he is all alone on the penalty spot - NOT Muric's fault even though it would be possible to stop the shot as it was a bad hit from Aribo.
Second goal Sulemana easily goes around Morsy (again) to fire a shot on goal, we are 3 guys around Onuachu in the box and (of course) Muric could have done a better job at clearing the ball to a corner instead of right in front of him, but we are letting players go around us too easy - here we are 7 (8 with Muric) against their 6 - and still they are all alone. We are jogging away from their players, ball watching and not doing enough to stop them. Muric has a few errors this season, but has also had some incredible saves. Tell me one player who never makes mistakes? Cajuste has been our best player for quite some time, including today, but his shot that reached for the sky could/should have been a goal - so maybe he cost us the point? :) We are all disappointed, but it was always going to be tough in PL - support our team instead of going after individuals!!
