Delap Release Clause £30m
Wednesday, 9th Apr 2025 16:41

Blues striker Liam Delap’s relegation release clause, which seems certain to be activated this summer, is reportedly £30 million.

The existence of clauses in the £15 million-plus-£5 million-top-ups deal Town agreed with Manchester City last summer have been known since the time of the move, but with Blues CEO Mark Ashton keeping his cards close to his chest when quizzed on them recently.

Now, according to The Guardian, should Town go down, which barring a miracle they are set to do, the 22-year-old will be available for £30 million, not the higher figures which have previously been rumoured.

City are known to have included a 20 per cent sell-on in the deal, thereby further reducing the sum the Blues will receive for their 12-goal top scorer.

As previously reported, Chelsea and Manchester United, whose technical director Jason Wilcox knows the England U21 international from his time at the Etihad, are leading the chase for Delap, who has caught the eye of top clubs in England and also Europe in an outstanding first season in the top flight.

Tottenham were reported to have sent a scout to watch him at the weekend, while Newcastle and Liverpool are also believed to have shown interest, along with Juventus.

City are widely known to have included a buy-back clause in the deal but are not understood to be eyeing a reunion this summer.

If he goes he goes. It’s the nature of football. We came up last year without him and will have time to replace. We need to balance the books as well. Will be gutted but not worth getting your knickers in a twist about.

Carberry. There is no evidence thst players have relegation release clauses I'm their contracts. In fact, taking into account the clubs criteria for signing players, that they have to want to play for ipswich, it's unlikely they exist. End of the day, none of us know for sure, bit why people habe to say things as tho they know I don't know. Only the club, the players, and their agents know the truth. Anything posted in the media is specualtion or pure rumours. Really don't know wjj Phil has to post this, stuff on here neither. Only gonna, stir up stuff that likely isn't even true.

Darkhorse28. Yes, we'd have to accept thd bid. Tho I don't think you'll find it's £30m. Every otherxstoemrg has said £40m up until now. Tho they're all just making up a figure, none of them actually know. But if one club has made that offer, and if looks like the player may go there, another club may offer more to try to get ahead of them. Remember, while whatever the release clause is, has to be accepted, it doesn't mean we can't accept higher bids. And if a,club want him that badly they could be tempted to put in a higher offer to put themselves, ahead of the game. Not saying they would, but u never know.

blues1. It is standard practise to have relegation clauses in contracts for the benefit of both parties. That's what happens and is very likely. You obviously aren't aware of that.

We have a long history of selling players on the cheap…….

My point is carberry if he makes the wrong move and doesn’t get games for whatever reason that’ll be worse than playing regularly in the championship. Look what lack of game time has done for Phillips!

It’s fun to speculate but at the same time it’s a waste of time as not one of the contributors has a clue about what’s really happening and most certainly no insight into the legalities. All this pontificating as if it was somehow our money is laughable. Be grateful that we have sound super smart owners and what will be will be.

@carberry
I disagree the players aren't thick lol we were favourites for relegation, what be point buying young Championship players to just sell them all again if relegated and pop back to league 1?
If I said the sky's blue you would say its red, not much faith in Ashton if you think he daft enough to put relegation clause in, especially Phillogene, we didn't need him short term, plenty forward options even with injuries.
If you are right we may as well just keep the league 1 lot and hope we don't do a Luton, as if. We will have an amazing squad by first game.

If Town have a time frame Clause he won't be going anywhere unless huge bid, and I think that's exactly what Ashton has done, he only scored 6 or 7 last year so nobody was expecting the hype, if Man City thought that then they would of just loaned him to us.
He is our player and I think the release clause kicks in next Summer so as Town's player they can take bids this Summer if they won't or just tell him you can't go yet.
It's all paper talk, he isn't that good yet, not an Isak or Mbeumo or Salah, Kane, Haaland, Bowen, Matetta.
Adebayo scored 10 for Luton in Prem didnt see big clubs pouncing for him, same with Macatee at Man City, he is a top player.
All this hype was just started by Match Of The Day, they hate Ipswich, game always last mostly, and saying he next Kane etc there are loads strikers in front of Delap for that slot, and yes he had game with full squad to make up numbers just like U21s train with first team if needed.
Do you really think Newcastle are thinking oh it's okay if we sell Isak or Liverpool sell Salah because Liam Delap can come in, can't see him wanting a relegation battle.
My money on he has release clause but for next season so if Town don't want to sell they won't. Leeds did it with Rutter, Vardy did it with Leicester, thee is loads examples.
Anyway Man City are going down wevare staying up and Delap going nowhere, strengthen squad mid table finish lol

It seems we’ve underestimated how good Delap was going to be for us.
From what we’ve seen, he’s a terrific player and there’s not many of his type of striker around.
Fantastic business to get him this season but maybe less so if he goes for peanuts.
Shame. That said, I’m a big fan of Hirst and feel he’s still got plenty to offer in his Town career.

Carberry. When uve stopped being arrogant about it, everyone knows relegation clauses exist. But that isn't the case in all contracts. And most are usually for a cut in wages on relegation, rather than an escape clause. So neither you, or anyone else, other than those at the club, know who has or hasn't one in their contracts.

TexasTom. So you think selling Delap, (even if it was £30m which nobody knows if it is or not), so doubling what we paid for him just a year ago, would be selling him on the cheap? Ridiculous.

I'm kinda of surprised by people's reactions and comments on here saying what terrible business Ashton and ITFC have done with the various scenarios and release clauses etc.

Nobody has mentioned the fact that it is just as likely that Liam Delap or Manchester City would not have entertained ITFC as a club for him to go to had we not agreed to those T&C's.

Also, he has hit the ground running and looks more than a prospect, he looks like the real deal with further improvement yet to come too. But he could just as easily have not been able to cope with the Prem (yet) and may hardly have played for us and everybody would be shouting that he's been a waste of money, worth less, and we've not had anyone up top at all for the season......hindsight is a wonderful thing.

At the end of the day, we took a chance on him, and he's turned out to be an absolute star. There haven't been too many forwards that we've had over the years that have been so far of anything else we've had through the door. Marcus Stewart probably the last to surprise us so pleasantly, with the rest of our top strikers being home grown (Scowcroft, Darren Bent would be two I can think of).

Are you all in Shock or Denial of what the consequences of RELEGATION could quite possibly, and potentially mean for the Club, and indeed the Town itself ??
Much gibberish being debated, of little substance !

Thought arrogance was your domain, blues1? Now you are backtracking on relegation clauses, don't think you are quite as bright as you think you are.

Quite frankly I am more interested in having a flourish to our end of season fixtures than I am in a subject that nobody has any factual knowledge about.

Option 1. Stay were you are. Bang in 20 to 25 goals and play every week. Potentially have another crack at the Premier league a year later.
Option 2. Earn more sitting on a bench and playing the odd cup game. Maybe get a few minutes late on in games.

Which one will keep you happiest and which one will give you more chance of England call ups?

I think we all know what his agent will want.

I would think there will be another mini rebuild in the Summer. However maybe Liam Delap may want to stay. Hopefully so.
Several will no doubt be moving on or returning to their parent clubs. We shall be in a great position to attract some very strong players though.

Admittedly I do not understand this situation. If for instance we have to sell Delap for say half his proper value can we not then impose a high sell on clause (? 50%) on the club that purchases him in an onwards situation. Answers on a post card.......

Philpott 2 agreed with your comments but will add a couple of other strikers that we signed that did ok for us, David Johnson the second and a signing that became a fans favourite, shefki Kuqi from Sheffield weds reserves.

And you’re right no one knew how well this signing would turn out, could have been so different . Dont think Philogene will double in value in his first full season! Signing Delap on the deal we gave him hardly goes down as bad business!

I thought I understood release clauses, but after reading all the comments on here I realise there are at least 23,857 different explanations for them.

@ Lee James
You are definitely 100% autistic level one (AKA Asperger's). That is an observation and not a criticism. If you didn't know that you do now. If you already knew that great, if you didn't I've just changed your life for the better. You're welcome.

I think Blueboy has some PTSD from 2002 lingering. Relegation is not a good scenario, but we are going to be fine.

If it's been reported by the Evening Star that the buy back clause is 30 million than that is correct unlike the major tabloids they do not report speculation. Our dealings in the transfer market have been a disaster in general. Buying players that are physically not up to the Premier league and never will be. And whoever agreed to these buy back clauses needs sacking no good to the club whatsoever. Delap will leave playing in the championship will be no good to his development at all. He won't be sitting on the bench if he does join a major club as some numpties have mentioned he will be loaned out to another Premier league side to further his development.
