West Brom Sack Mowbray After Three Months Monday, 21st Apr 2025 19:45 Blues legend Tony Mowbray has been sacked as head coach of West Brom after only three months in charge along with his assistant Mark Venus.
Mowbray rejoined the Baggies in January having been given the all-clear after spending almost a year out of the game to undergo treatment for bowel cancer.
The 61-year-old had been in charge for 18 games, winning five, drawing five and losing eight, including a 3-1 reverse at home to strugglers Derby this afternoon.
A club statement reads: “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results.
“Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at The Hawthorns and their contributions to the club winning the 2007/08 Sky Bet Championship title will never be forgotten. Everyone at Albion wishes Tony and Mark all the very best in the future.”
Mowbray, who prior to his illness had briefly been in charge at Birmingham, had previously been manager at the Hawthorns between 2006 and 2009, leading them to the Championship title in 2007/08.
Albion, 10th in the Championship, have named James Morrison as boss on an interim basis, assisted by Damia Abella and Boaz Myhill while they search for another permanent head coach.
Mowbray and Venus were key members of the Blues’ 2000 promotion-winning side with the man known as Mogga then joining George Burley’s staff and continuing under Joe Royle before taking his first managerial job at Hibernian in May 2004.
Since then, in addition to his first stint with the Baggies and his time at St Andrew’s, he has had spells at Celtic, Middlesbrough, Coventry, Blackburn and Sunderland.

Good timing, happily take them two, 2 old school managers who know what it's like to wear the shirt and a big part of club history, could be fate.

Do you really mean that LJ99? We’ve got a top, top young manager, he says he’s staying so why would we want to take a really nice bloke but a failed manager again? I just don’t get it.

Lee, there are females out there..put as much energy into them as you do being like this and you’ll make a wonderful life partner to someone

Really feel for mogga, but he ain’t the man to take us forward even if we were looking for someone, but we ain’t so pointless post!

@stocktractor pointless post. Nothing to say about football or Ipswich Town so why bother. @Broseleyblue Yes I totally mean it, I don't agree that Mckenna is a top top young manager as yet, he did well to get us out of League 1 and as there is almost every year in the Championship we were the team who defied the odds, this year it will probaly be Bristol City or Coventry, before us was Luton and many many others who now lay in lower divisions Wigan, Blackpool, Hull, Watford, Cardiff, Norwich many. I'm more concerned with the accolades he got this year and I don't think he has the passion a manager needs, I think he is a good coach with new philosophy's and thoughts on playing but have you ever seen him show emotion about anything. We need someone who will not be afraid to drop players, whoever they are. Mowbray and Venus are hardly failed managers they won promotion from Championship, they wouldn't be my first choice but the fact they played for Ipswich in a promotion winning team and know the club they maybe good. My first choice would sefinately be Dyche. Mckenna I agree with pundits that he is arrogant but as I said I'm waiting to see how this Summer plays out, for me if he makes the call to sell league 1 lads and continue evolving the team great, if he continued with these lads and his playing philosophy he will have to go early and no doubt these are the questions Ashton and the board will be asking, it's a pivotal point in the resurrection of the club.

@dissboy not a pointless post in my opinion we maybe looking for a new manager sooner than you think! Mckenna in my opinion, unless, he changes his philosophy is also not equipped to take us forward having already taken us back ultimately its his tactics. He is too young and too soft, I don't know of another manager who accepts defeat like he does. So experience would be good

Both were awesome in their day for us and it just shows there is no room for sentiment in football. On another note, is there any mileage in restricting posters as to how much content they’re allowed to post? It’s getting boring now!

Whatever Barry and Edmondu Won't be bullied by you so called fans who live in dreamland when it comes to this football club, that's boring. I'm not negative to the club I'm negative to not accepting league 1 players getting us security and longevity in the Prem and I'm negative in not accepting this fine margins nonsense.

Think McKenna has enough credit in the bank for a little while yet. Everyone's allowed an opinion, but as much as I like Mowbray/Venus for past playing exploits l am not sure they are the future. Dyche is probably too one dimensilonal and we'd probably be moaning about his style of play before long But hey. Just an opinion

3 months after the all clear from cancer just proves what a heartless business football is.
Leejames99 added 22:54 - Apr 21
With all respect how much more credit can Mckenna and those players have, never mind credit, he got 6 million for a season with just 4 wins and a handful of draws early in season, shipped 38 goals since Jan, I think he has earned his money and milked the success of 2 promotions now, we are relegated we had a taste and built the club up in terms of stadium etc so let's see what his intentions are with players he spent money on and if its all part of his masterclass, he has all the tools, players and finance to continue his Ipswich journey but its time to let most of the passengers from League 1 off the bus or we will need a new driver. I think Dyche may do okay with our new signings as going forward and scoring should not be an issue, it's shutting shop is the issue, plus he likes 2 up top whichbI thinknwould suit Town, it's coming back into fashion, this playing out from back does not work

Lee James. McKenna has no passion? Did you see his reaction to the late goal conceded at Hull last season. Plus a few other reactions this year. Yes he's calm. Good! As for Dyche - nice bloke but not a town man. Everyone knows we got to the Premier League too soon, and we needed at least 2 more transfer windows to be ready. As for league one players, I for one was impressed by Morsey's leadership in the second half on Saturday. I think we should get the opinion of the Arsenal midfielders rather than yours! When McKenna leaves we will probably look overseas. As per Wolves, Brighton, Bournemouth.....
Leejames99 added 23:45 - Apr 21
@warfariman69 That is the problem right there, sacked in by the narrative Firstly you and other fans talk like after 22 years away we are now in a position to pick and choose when we play on the Prem, when we will be established there and all on our terms, never mind the other 23 teams wanting the same. In these transfer windows you talk of whilst in the Championship which players are we enticing to come to Portman Road who will ensure Premiership stability, but are happy to build from the Championship? So Kmk gets 2 more seasons that's 18 million to him while he spends multi millions on players he doesn't play and are unwanted and continues playing the same players from league 1. Can you see how ridiculous that is? If Sheff Utd don't go up via play offs that's 3 teams with parachute payments to contend with who all are looking to the promised land and then we have the might of Birmingham City now with money to burn and it looks like Wrexham whose train does not look like stopping, plus the rest, Luton if they survive still have a parachute payment so in what world are we just brushing those years aside? Already you are making excuses for no promotion next season saying we need a couple of seasons in Championship. I would suggest that we have 1 shot at returning and its next season, if we fail it will be Championship for a good few years. It is very likely that we finish below Leicester now, they have 2 home games left against 2 relegated teams and will want to give their fans some hope for next season and I fully expect them to beat us and the Saints, they were really good vs Liverpool, they are only 4 goals difference behind now and it's safe to say that is likely to be down to O after Newcastle game where 4 goals will be the minimum. We won't win again this season aside maybe the last game as a farewell game for many players, a testimonial of sorts. How any fan can find any positive out of the game vs Arsenal is ridiculous, they played with us in first gear, they were embaressed at the goals they scored, those 3 guys who do podcast do the same, blaming anyone but Davis and saying it was only a yellow and Saka milked it, it was a disgusting challenge by a frustrated winger who was being schooled. As for Morsy, he has served us well but his time in Prem came to late and its a platform he won't see again, I feel sorry for him, he just runs around pointing and him trying to tackle Trossard for first goal was like watching an OAP pick up a dropped Werthers. I'm afraid Mckenna is a woke manager, frightened to say anything negative and trying to play with new ideas that we don't have the players for. I appreciate he has had a good run at the club, and he has the tools for himself to carry on his journey if he wants but to do that he needs to get a backbone and needs to build around the next generation of Town players, I fear he is too stubborn.

Somebody has got a lot to say. McKenna is our manager. Back him until he is not. As for Mowbray and Venus, they will always be in the hearts of Ipswich fans. It doesn’t make them the right choice as the next management team of this club, whenever that maybe, hopefully not any time soon.

Ditto, can't stand someone speaking truth more like, okay to slate Muric and Phillogene and boo England Internationals. Mckenna, I'm not positive about 1 home win all season, worst home record in history, a manage who tried to stay on Prem with League 1 and Prem rejects, no im not. You believe the narrative and papers I don't.

Defence coach anyone? Doesn't appear to be in KMcK's wheelhouse and has been a major contributing factor to our failure this year. If not one of these two , certainly a role for someone. John McGreal maybe?

The best way to eradicate the common troll is to starve it of oxygen: I.e. attention. Do not respond at all to its posts and do not mark up or down. The common troll is a sad, lonely attention-seeker that will have to move on somewhere else if starved of attention. Do not feed it.

No right now I do not back Mckenna as I feel he does not have the skill set to manage at a higher level, he is one of these new managers who won't change their style or philosophy. Why do I have to follow what others like, what's going on with people in this country who believe their philosophy is the only one. Nobody gives anything positive, aside we got 2 promotions, yeah we did and now we relegated, Nottingham Forest were 4th bottom last year, now they third so what, its football. You Mckenna fans genuinely think we are going down because we went up a wee bit early but Mckenna and Morsy will take us back up no problem, with new signings you all hate and boo. Don't pick and choose what is negative and what isn't if you don't allow people, other fans to do the same. If your happy being stagnant that's up to you, I feel we are in a great position to take the club back and be established but based on this season, kmk and his clan are not equipped so a clear out and a fresh start is needed I think. Getting quite tedious on here having to justify being allowed an opinion that goes against the 50 or so fans on here. There are plenty other supporters on here who do not think Mckenna is the right man now, no reflection on previous success, or nobody on here says how they think Mckenna is going to stroll back, better equipped to establish in the Prem and fend off potentially 3 parachute payment clubs who will have alot of money, especially the saints from Tyler Dybling sale, then Boro, Birmingham, Wrexham, how is Mckenna going to get us back with the same philosophy and tactics? Every team in the country from national league to Liverpool knows how to play against Ipswich. Draw them forward, make a tackle, wingers get set, and just look up and boot it into space left or right, cross straight across goal for a tap in.Stay high and we don't need to worry about Delap, he will never see ball We were the only club in the whole country to not have won, we have worst home record in the club's history,we are on course to shift the most goals past us and you think Mckenna going to sort all that in Championship. He couldn't even raise our players to get a win at home to Wolves without their star player to put us 6 points behind, he can't coach how to shut shop at 2-0 advantage. 27 points lost, only 1 home win and play better away, I wonder why? I tell you what, I believe we won't get one more point this season home or away with the exception of possibly West Ham in the farewell/testimonial game. I think as Leicester have 2 home games against us and Saints with nothing to play for they will give their fans something to cheer about for their last 2 games, especially if they play as they did vs Liverpool. That's 6 points and 3 ahead of us. We are only 8 ahead on goal difference but Newcastle away we can add another 4 or 5 on that. Same with Brentford, we will end second bottom it's nailed on. We can't beat Saints or Leicester so who thinks it's going to be easy next season? If I'm wrong and we pick up point before West Ham fanfare I will stop posting, but if I'm right, I don't mind downmarks but do the unessacary abuse, because I and others have a different opinion. And if/when Mckenna sacked we can talk more, let's see who starts on first game in Championship. But first let's see if we can get another point this season, that will give you haters an added bonus to cheer the team on. Good luck

What bait is that? An opinion you don't like! Are we all supposed to just say Well done lads, you tried hard, we came up to early, but you really tried your best. It's fair that you all gave up in Jan after the Saints game with over 30 points to play for. We totally understand that Burns and Chaplin were injured otherwise we would of done better. We don't like any of your signings especially that horrible keeper bit we dealt with him. It's not a problem you sticking to your philosophy and tactics and allowing us to be turned over every week, but of course Leif Davis has to play. Don't worry about the 1 home win, we got to see some superstars, never mind the season ticket money, enjoy a nice hol with your 6 million, don't worry about the worst home record and goal deficit in the history of the club, never mind, we understand the fine margins. Please don't worry about the 27 points lost from winning positions who needs points anyway it was far more important to bring on the heroes as subs and leave the ones you paid millions for on the bench, we would much rather see Morsy jogging on than the Man City England International or Chappers instead of that little Phillogene. You take your time, plenty credit in the bank with us and in Morsy, Hurst, Burns, Davis, Harness and Co we know with a couple of loans we will be great again. League 1 or Prem as long as you and the lads are here we will follow our leader. Just sell the new signings and carry on as you were with your groundbreaking tactics and ability to lift the team for any occassion. We have forgiven being knocked out of cup by Maidstone on live TV also Bring on the statue! Ps Don't worry about being a premier league team and also the only team in entire country to not have a win, we know the fine margins no doubt about that.
