Manchester United 'In Pole Position' For Delap Tuesday, 13th May 2025 18:27 Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to sign Blues striker Liam Delap in the summer.
Delap, 22, has a relegation release clause in the contract he signed after joining the Blues for an initial £15 million from Manchester City in July last year which means he can depart Portman Road for £30 million in the close season.
Chelsea and United were among the first to make their interest in the England U21 international known but with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle United, Everton and Nottingham Forest all now having joined them as decision time approaches.
According to Sky Sports, Delap would be happy to join the Red Devils this summer with Champions League qualification via a Europa League win potentially giving their case a boost when he ultimately makes his choice.
We understand there are indeed some in Delap’s camp who favour a move to United, however, the player himself is still open-minded on his destination but with an exit from Town all but certain.
Delap has scored 12 goals for the Blues this season, his first Premier League campaign.

I a tally think the hype surrounding Delap all season is cynical agent speak, because i see a player who is string and can hit the ball hard. He caught a few out at the start of the season but has not much else to his game. Hirst is twice the player and creates so.mhch more for the team than Delap. I actually couldn't give a flying one if Delap leaves. Just hurry up and leave. I would also drop him to the bench for the last 2 games, his head has been turned and he believes thr hype being bandied about. Hirst is the boy we need to keep.

Your all talking out of your arses! Delap would be a great fit for united! He would start regular for them and play second fiddle to nobody in that team! I

We went up without him and will do again but if he did stay(he wont obviously) he would be a goal machine in the championship

Delap will certainly be off soon but he would be well advised to speak with KMcK about the culture at Man U. Why Blueboy feels the need to call other supporters “sick” for having a different view to him says a lot about himself. Delap has enormous potential and we wish him well as he continues his journey to become a unique player in a league devoid of characters.

Well I must be sick then. His touch is fairly awful. He gives the ball away all the time. Very hit and miss. Had a very powerful shot and puts himself about but not sure what all the fuss is about. He certainly doesn't fit our team.

I think we're more than happy to take the money. I doubt he'd have stayed if we'd survived - his 'team' will want to cash in before he disappears back into obscurity.

It will all end in tears. Hopefully it will be a stepping stone to something better. Man Utd could well fail to win the Europa cup. Rashford is so anti about Man Utd and that speaks volumes. Probably a lot of twists before LD decides on his next move. LD still needs some more developing, which means a squad player at best. European football is the key.

I just hope the £30m includes a sell on clause so if Man Utd sell him for £60m say later on that we get a share of that profit (as Man City reportedly will of ours).

Still think Newcastle might be his destination. Isak is rumoured to be going to another Premier League club while Wilson's contract is up. He would be a big hit there, they love a robust number 9, and he's ready otherwise there wouldn't be a queue to sign him.

Like others have said, he started the season well, but has been below average since Christmas. He is not quite premier league quality yet, so If he stays, great. If he leaves, oh well never mind.

On the other hand. He goes to Man U, has a terrible time with their awful fans. They get relegated. We on our way back up pick him up a wiser man, for a song.... Then I woke up.

Awful move that one! I listen to Andy Goldstein on Talksport, massive united fan and he has said on more than one occasion that Amorin hasn’t improved any players since he took over, players have left the club and improved, the club has problems and Delap is not the player to go there and help fix things. He needs to go somewhere where he will be nurtured into the player we all believe he will become. When he joined us from Man City after an underwhelming loan spell at Hull, not many if any thought we had just signed a premier league striker, by all accounts this season he has surprised many including KM. I think KM should be given credit( a lot of) for developing Delap this season! As others have said he’s been very average start of the year! He has potential but he is not the finished article and a move to wrong club is imo career suicide! I hope his dad guides him in the right direction. Good luck to him when he moves. Oh and someone posted we are making 100% profit on him, no we are not, we have to give Mancity 20% of the profit.

30 million is a joke, I am so confused why ITFC fans are so OK with the total. Ashton said we would make a packet on him (in not so many words) alas we have not. Hirst will not stay fit, has not at any point of his Ipswich career, why would it happen now?

Delap has a great touch, anyone remember the first day of the season when he took on Quanser down the left? With players running behind him he will thrive, not sure on his efficiency in front of goal but he is young and knows he need to improve. Going to Man United though - that's a decision that may shape his career, 2 years, 3 managers and rotting there will do him no good. Id like to see him go to Everton and play lots of games under Moyes without the 'big club' pressure. Im guessing his agent will be discussing a huge signing on fee and that's probably going to shape the decision.

There’s obviously been some misleading comments regarding Delap’s contract. Originally it was reported that the clause said that Manchester City had the option of buying him if we were relegated. Now however, it’s reported that Delap can leave if we were relegated. There’s a significant difference. I guess the 30m was put into the contract to prevent ITFC from putting a too high a price on his head, thus putting clubs off. However, it doesn’t mean that ITFC would have to accept anything below that figure. Manchester Utd are in a very difficult period. In order to compete at the very top level again, they need to spend shed loads of money on many players. Therefore, in my opinion, they will try and get Delap for less than 30m. I believe the reaction to that from Mark Ashton, will be, if you want him, it’s 30m and not a penny less. Considering their possible expenditure on several other players, and of course FFP rules, that could put them off. He could go elsewhere of course, but my guess is, Ashton will insist on the price being 30m. Will clubs agree with that valuation? It’s not much money in today’s market, but it is a decent chunk when other expenditures are having to be considered. Time will tell, we’ll see what happens.

On the other hand, it could start a price war, there’s nothing preventing clubs from paying more than 30m. After all, they are not bound by this contract!
Dissboyitfc added 08:24 - May 14
I don’t think it will create a bidding war, any extras a club would be willing to put in will go into wages and contract on the table.

Hirst has had a decent run lately and has looked a better player than Delap.

£27m towards rebuilding the midfield and hopefully scouting a decent forward from Europe maybe. No need to play him for the last 2 games. Thanks and good luck.

He’s had a bite at the forbidden fruit of the premiership and liked it so you can’t see him opting to returning to the championship. And for all the arguments concerning his development he’s proven he can handle it and without his 12 goals I suspect we could be below Southampton just now. He seems to have a good team around him, his Dad no doubt has influence, but like many on here on I don’t see United as the right move. Hope he likes BBQs !!

Why would Delap rush to leave ITFC? He could do better to stay here, score lots of goals and after one season be back in the Premiership with us. Instead he would probably be sitting on the bench somewhere else, learning little. He has been well looked after here, never having to play for a full 95 minutes. However, I expect his agent wants a big cheque.........now!

Poet No, it wasnt incorrect that mancity jabe a buy back clause. That is in place as well as the release clause. Just unlikely that city would want him back when they have Haaland and Marmoush. To those suggesting Hirst is a far better player than Delap. Sorry, not a chance. Hirst is better at holding up the ball and bringing others into the game, something I'm sure Delap will add to his game in time( still young and a lot to learn). But Hirst will never score enough goals, as his career so far goes to prove. Do think Delap would be better off going to the likes of forest or West ham, where he'd likely play more often, thsn go to United or arsenal for instance, and end up sitting on the bench week in week out. While it's extremely unlikely, still think he'd be better off staying here another year, having a stellar season in the championship, then move on should we not go back up.

Woolfyattheback. How is £30m a joke. Twice what we paid for him a year ago. I'd say thats a pretty good deal. And pretty sure there'll be sell on clauses in any deal we do.
