Town Reject Coventry Woolfenden Approach Tuesday, 19th Aug 2025 19:26 Town have rejected a Coventry City approach for central defender Luke Woolfenden.
Journalist Ben Jacobs is reporting that a bid has been turned down, however, we understand the Sky Blues made an approach rather than an offer.
The Blues indicated that they have no intention of allowing the 26-year-old, who signed a new contract which runs to the summer of 2027 with an option for a further year, in January.
A number of other Championship clubs are also understood to be eyeing the Ipswich-born centre-half, Stoke City among them.
Long-term admirers Sheffield United were keen during the winter window, however, their interest is understood to have cooled.
Academy product Woolfenden has been a core member of the squad which climbed from League One to the Championship, however, seems likely to have limited opportunities in the campaign ahead with skipper Dara O’Shea in his right-sided central defensive role.

This should read, ‘Academy product Woolfenden has been a core member of the squad which climbed from League One to the premier league’ right?

I'm just wondering if LW might be regretting signing the new contract. I suspect the arrival of Cedric Kipre, wouldn't have done much to add to his enjoyment. He deserves a place in a side in this division, somewhere at least.

Luke Woolfenden is a fine player and certainly does not let anyone down when he plays. In my opinion he is equally as good as our other defenders. Should not sell him.

It’s a very long season , with cup games if you are in them , we need a biggish squad to compete really, wish they would add some more midfielders soon , and another striker, so slow. Other clubs are overtaking us. Norwich have got about 10 new players. They get them in , can’t stand Norwich , will be a hard derby against them for sure.

Woolfy needs a new challenge, so all the very best for the future make sure you choose a good club plus a four years contract.

I've been watching football for 50+ years and honestly don't see DOS as a much better player than Wolfie. Wolfie IS Ipswich

Ipswich build up from the back is too slow. When Wolfie plays it seems even slower. His general game is good but speed is his weakness. Selling him to a rival isn’t ideal.

Dos is a much better player than Wolfie. Did you see our defending in the championship last time were there.

Woolfie is vastly overrated on here. McKenna rarely plays him ( which tells you all you need to know about the player) and has brought in a CB that is literally head and shoulders better than him. Id , frankly, bite the hand off any club after LW.

I think Wolfy is a good championship defender but lapses in concentration have let him down on occasions. Would be interesting to see if Oshea or Greaves got injured who would be brought in the signing of Kipre seems to suggest McKenna is not happy with Wolfy.

Surprise, Surprise - has our SALE ended ? Sell anymore and the Loan returns, and we’d be fielding the Under 21’s !!

Personally think hes as good as Greaves at the moment

Wooffy will put in a Transfer request if he isn’t playing regularly - and fully understood. I think more are beginning to question McKenna’s Team Management & Tactics at last - equally understood.

Ashton, after spending most of the summer cashing in our players and shipping others out, now needs to focus his 100% attention on signing some exceptional replacements for those sold - primarily a striker - as he’s failed to replace Delap. These new signings should be permanent additions, rather than yet more loans.

No doubt he'll be allowed to leave....and then replaced with another bl00dy loan player.

I read this as Town are not interested in selling LW so very curious that someone on here reads the opposite to further their very strange agenda of criticism.

Please sell him | | |

He has limited value in the balance sheet, it’s pure profit. The sales and loans tell the full picture, and Brett couldn’t have been any clearer. If he go’s, that will improve the valuation of the club about the same as the Delap sale, for context. It will 100% happen assuming we can get a replacement in, and their cost can be spread over multiple years. A small rump of fans are in for a shock, and need to get their head out of the sand, like their religious like emotional attachment, they’ll be the ones that go completely the other way when they finally wake up. The club should have been more honest after Brett’s statement, prioritising season ticket and shirt sales, is really poor…, many supporters have been funding the club through all the darker periods and deserved more respect.

Let's face it we are a selling club because the owners want the money. Therefore it is always possible that a big offer will succeed. Broadhead was sold even though McKenna said he didn't want him to leave, regardless of the fact he didn't play him enough to keep him happy. Humphries is another who won't get a look in and will eventually leave because regardless of the way he has been talked up, won't be a starter. We have begun the season with one injury prone striker and a signing who is unfit and now injured, how has this been allowed to happen?

I have a lot of time for Mark Ashton, especially after the Marcus Evans years. He has to take enormous credit for moving this club forward. However it doesn't mean he isn't free from scrutiny or criticism, neither is Kieran. The Ship is wobbling a bit. Last summer we spent too much time on the Broja affair with Chelsea. Late deals going astray often mean panic decisions being made in days leading up to the deadline. This year we made a similar mistake with Chelsea and Marc Guiu, with many weeks evaporating. Quite frankly I would have gone for McBurnie who is a like for like competitor for Hirst, who we seem to be pinning too much on. We allowed the Cajuste thing to longer on far too long meaningful he is unlikely to be ready for a full appearance for another couple of weeks or so. We need to forget Hackney as that will linger and we will end up panic buying like we did two or three years ago when we bought Ahadme. Ashton's dashboard is clearly smoke and mirrors as we ended up paying to use Brighton's system until last season. We are paying far too much for the likes of Philogene and Clarke. Enciso was bought for about £9 million and was then a full International. It's all very well being ambitous with some of the names mentioned so far, but there comes a time when reality has to sink in, yes we know what we have in the coffers now giving us greater scope.

The thread was meant to be about Woolfie not another excuse to moan about MA or KM etc. So back to Woolfie. He was a starter in two promo winning sides. Whilst I assume he was ok to be less regular in the PL it’s understandable he’d not want to drop to being just a back-up in Town’s Championship v2 squad. He wants to play (as does I hear Christian). They don’t want to end their careers having sat on a bench for most of it. So it’s ok to say don’t sell Woolfie but we have to try to see it from his perspective. Even if he does stay it’s likely we’ll sell him if we get promoted and then want to strengthen the CBs. Ie we say we want him now but we probably just using him. It’s a very tough position for Woolfie

Let's face it, it's a very thin news week. "Town phone newcastle over youngster" and "coventry phone Town over Wolfy" These sorts of calls go on all day every day between clubs.....
