I'd advise the Burnley players to borrow some boxes from the cricket team.

Ambitous summer plans
at 08:10 26 Jun 2025

If we do that, then I reckon we probably have a stronger squad than we did 12 months previous. Which is I'm sure what Ashton and McKenna are aiming for. The loss of Hutch, if he goes, could be argued as weakening us but this time last year we didn't see Delap as a monster #9.

I can't really see Muric being sold for a decent fee, and I'm pretty certain he is our best keeper. Would be happy seeing him compete with Palmer, Walton and Slicker to both go.

Would love to see us hold on to Hutch, and if we do and couple with the changes you've identified, I could see us completely running away with the league. The only other change is Johnson. Early season I thought he offered nothing. As the season wore on, he really put in some good performances.

I think McKenna's biggest problem will be keeping everyone happy with the minutes they will get, but if the team is winning most weeks, this is much less of a problem.

That is certainly part of the problem. There is a common pay spine in the NHS, and for example nurses and others can be frustrated that scientists in the NHS are generally on higher pay bands. But that’s because it takes a long time to train as a scientist at least 3 years post degree) and then further training and certification to progress.
The main thing to get across is that the careers are (I) pretty secure (2) you are doing a job that really benefits society (3) has a good pension. Once we get youngsters on work experience or especially as interns, they love it and mostly will accept that whilst they could earn more in private industry, the benefits above are worth it. But we are very limited in how many work experience and interns we can take, so a national campaign to promote public sector science would be very helpful!

I'm glad you have a primary school that is putting emphasis on STEM. But we need a culture change driven by the government running ads on TV and scoial media to educate and entice youngsters into getting educated and trained for jobs that many deem to be "too hard". I remember a few years back there was a campaign to get more teachers, we need to do a similar thing for science. I really thinks we've had 2 or 3 decades of soft youngsters who seem reluctant to put their mobile phones down and engage in hard effort to get good grades in STEM.

Over the past 5 years I've placed a huge emphasis on outreach to schools and colleges, set up a couple on internships, running work experience, junior care days, and the odd open day. The main difficulty is that each school sets its own timetable, and if we announce an open day on a partcular day, the schools are uncoordinated and the vast majority won't be able to attend. It is really hard to take people out of their clinical scientific jobs and to access clinical areas to organise groups of schoolkids, so we can't do it every month. We've done this for one nearby private girls school where there is a class of 20 girls doing A level Physics. But then the diversity officer gets uppity telling us that we have to do the same for all schools, or stop doing it. But most schools only have a small handful of students doing A level Physics, so we have selected teh one with the highest hit rate. It needs better central coordination and a national campaign. Until we do that, we will have shortages of home grown candidates, and need to rely on immigration.

Squad shape up / transfer targets
at 12:24 18 Jun 2025

We need to make a statement signing soon, to show potential new recruits and existing players our level of ambition. We need to start this season with a stronger squad than we started last season in the Prem. I remeber in the demolition squad season, our first signing was Wes Burns - which at the time seemed to get the ball rolling and we brought in some great players , for our level, that summer.

For me, there's no point in persisting with Slicker. Just help him find another club. Agree it's a big season for H Clarke and J Taylor. What they've shown so far just isn't good enough for what we need. Broadhead is a good Championship player, but I could see him being one of the ones we need to trade.
Goalkeeper worries me. Of teh ones we have I think we keep one only. Muric or Palmer. Muric has so much potential, but if he hasn't bonded with the rest of the players and doesn't talk to them during games, then it should be Palmer we keep.
I really hope we have got some foreign targets - UK players are so overpriced, and for the quality we need would be in the £20M region, if we can get overseas players they'd be half that.

Last summer, after 4 years of being unable to recruit from within the UK, I recruited a scientist from South Africa to a postion as deputy head of Nuclear Medicine at a UK hospital. He's a wondeful chap, everyone loves him to bits. He has a wife and 2 kids whom he is hoping to bring over this year to join him. It isn't easy, in fact it was really difficult to get him in to the UK, and get accommodation and visa sorted, and it will be even more difficult to get his family over. But we need these professionals as there just aren't suitably qualified applicants from within the UK.
There's a whole bunch of things that have been neglected for decades that led to this situation. I feel bad that we have taken a good scientist away from his home country where he will be badly missed. But the UK has not invested in making science careers attractive, and it seems our own children have shied away from STEM subjects in favour of soft easy subjetcs. Until there is more promotion of and support for science in general, the UK will be dependent on bringing in skilled overseas workers. Maybe we should be providing bursaries to UK students studying STEM.

Some people are absolute scum, part 498749
at 15:57 17 Jun 2025

There are and always will be stupid and ignorant scumbags, that will never change. But the people to ask questions of are the misguided/corrupt politicians who deregulated gambling, along with the weak regulation of social media.
Gambling has become an enormous societal problem - surprise, surprise. It preys on the stupid, and sucks in youngsters with the crazy levels of advertising that push it down your throat, whether at sports events, on TV, internet, it's pervaisve and everywhere. It contributes nothing positive, just ruins lives. This abuse of sports women and men is just one more indication of how out of control it is.
If I could, I'd ban all gambling advertising and instataneous betting. Maybe do away with online betting. If you want to place a bet, go in to a bookies and prove your age. Society would benefit hugely. And even the individuals who gamble would see their lives improve, although many would be too thick to realise it.
Societies need regulation, because many people just can't make the right choices.

Delap
at 12:14 17 Jun 2025

I'm delighted for the lad. He put in huge effort for us and was easily our best player who was clearly destined for a top team. We just aren't ready yet, so let's be grateful that we've had a top player on his journey - he provided most of the highlights in what was for the most part a very tough season.
Watching him for Chelsea, what a difference to be playing in a team where they are more on the front foot, with other top players making runs into space and opening up options. As a young player with his ability, that's where he needs to be for his own sake. If we had been a bit more ready for the PL, and managed to stay up, his release clause wouldn't have been triggered. I wish him every success and hope to see hm in the England #9 shirt very soon.

I can trump everyone on this.

On the day I was born, we were 20th in League Division 1.
Once I came into existence, Ipswich immediatley became the best team in the country and became Champions of England. It was all down to yours truly

Israel attack Iran
at 06:43 13 Jun 2025

This isn't just some tit for tat strike. It seems that it has been a major attack. With Iran being a nuclear power, this is very, very worrying. I just don't get why the West condones Israel to be so aggressive time and time again. Defending against the attacks of last October and dismantling Hamas is one thing. But the suffering of millions of Palestinians is on a wholly different scale, it's nothing short of genocide. But now to attack Iran, this is surely a declaration of war? It seems that Israel believe that with Trump in the White House, he will back them up no matter what they do. Trump no doubt sees it as an opportuinty to clear lots of land in the Middle East so that he can develop it as a holiday resort. We have psychopathic morons as leaders in so many countries. It doesn't look good for the human race.

Gut feeling…
at 07:09 8 Jun 2025

We have already seen from last year that KM is a thinker and taking a long term view over his career. Thomas Frank has done a superb job at Brentford - so much so that it woud be incredibly difficult to do any better next year. And they are a minnow - maybe more highly valued right now, but that can chnage so quickly. Whereas ITFC are a much bigger club in terms of fanbase, community, history, potential. If KM stays and we go up as Champions, whilst Brentford slip backwards, KM would regret it. My money says he stays here unless Spurs or a bigger prem team than Brentford come for him.

Burgess and Tuanzebe

Ashton made no secret 2 years ago of the fact that ITFC need to get into player trading, that we would but players with potental and sell them for more than we paid. Its clear form teh signings last year, all are young with potential, with the exception of Szmodics, and if we get offers that provide a healthy return, we wi do it. Which means more cash to bring in young talent again.
Losing lots would be very disruptive so it would be good to see some contract extensions for some. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a starting lineup with 5 or 6 news faces.
