Favourite 'cr*p' players? 13:43 - Jan 19 with 13877 viewsSwailsey

Players who probably weren't very good but you liked them anyway? Players who others seemingly hated, but liked?

I know there's been similar threads like this before, but with all the hatred JD is getting, it's worth remembering that far worse players have been strangely liked, without any reason.

For me?

Colin Healy (still maintain he was a good player, ruined by injury)
Manual Thetis
ALB
Ben Thatcher*
N'Daw

*mainly because I signed him on FM years ago and he was ace for me.

I was thinking about Colin Healy earlier. H e put that ball through for Priskin's goal against Arsenal.

Healy would be an improvement on what we have in the middle of the park at the moment.

Recently it would be:
Gary Roberts
Stern John
Leadbetter (Slated by 90% of posters on here)

Stern John deserves to be on the list for his name alone.
I also quite liked Gary Roberts, although the problem was when he was with us, he was probably playing 1 league too high.

You'd be better off putting something akin to that in your signature thingy. Save posting it every time.

And ALB's career really did take off after he left us which further backs up your opinion...

Had he stayed at Bolton and been first choice keeper, rather than being relegated they may have been challenging for the play-offs as in the 38 championship games he played, we averaged 1.58............

Priskin - Convinced there's a player somewhere in there.
Shumi - Random unknown foreigner with a cool name.
ALB - I didn't actually think he was as terrible as he's made out to be.
Balkenstein - Cultured left foot but that's about it.
Fallon - No reason. Just liked him!

YES! GET IN! You are spot on, ALB was nowhere near as terrible as he was made out to be. Which is why I like to point out, on any suitable occasion that in the 38 games he played for us we averaged 1.58 points per game which, if those games had been over the course of a single season, would have seen us pushing for the play off places. This at a time when our defence was terrible and we were otherwise more likely to be struggling against relegation.

Didn't ALB have two current Premier League central defenders in front of him?

Priskin was so badly managed by both Keane and Jewell that by the end he had totally given up.

I recall him getting seven consecutive man of the match awards under Keane and the whole Portman Road singing "you don't know what you're doing" when Keane took him off in one game.

Now he is remembered as an awful player. Probably doesn't help that he was bought with the Rhodes money.

Priskin had an abysmal strike rate for a foward everywhere he has been, apart from the Bratislavan league, so I doubt it was Management that was the issue.

The only Muff in Town.

I'd hazard a guess it was 1.58 but I could be wrong ;-)

He played behind the same defences as Wright, Begovic, Fulop, Stockdale and McCarthy. Yet with him in goal we averaged 1.58 points per game which if they had been over the course of a single season.........

Priskin had one really good season at Watford in the Championship when Brendan Rogers realised he was very effective if they played the ball to his feet & used his pace. Then we signed him & lumped long balls at him, presumably because he was 6'1". Classic mismanagement.

Bajner....just for the chant

Shumi I liked but he never really delivered.

But the ultimate has got to be Sergei Baltacha.
I hero-worshipped that guy, bought an old-style CCCP replica shirt in homage and even painted a hammer and sickle on my inflatable, er, banana. (Those were the days).
But apart from his debut when he played totally out of position but scored, he was constantly injured and a shadow of the footballer he once was.
Even now, I look back fondly on his time at Ipswich despite the fact I know it was tosh.

Gary Roberts always gave 100%. I met him as well and he was a really nice guy. Think he couldn't believe he was at such a big club.

I met him once at one of the 'meet the players' evenings that the Club used to do for shareholders prior to ME take over.
I was getting the players autographs and Tommy Miller(I think) passed my sheet of paper or whatever on to Gary Roberts and I said "I don't want his"-he looked a bit bewildered and then we both laughed.
He did seem to be a very nice guy.
