Clegg: Managers Need Time
Clegg: Managers Need Time
Wednesday, 25th Aug 2010 16:06

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says he and owner Marcus Evans realise managers often need time in order to build a team. Blues boss Roy Keane endured a tricky first season at Portman Road but received the backing of Evans and his chief executive.

Clegg said: “Marcus Evans and myself discussed the situation but we believe that Roy Keane is the man to take this club forward.

“He is doing all that is possible to identify the changes that were necessary and the team is playing differently this season. It takes time for a manager to build the side he wants and to play the way that he wants.

“We have a perfect example of that in the way Sir Bobby Robson was given a number of years to prove himself. But of course it is important that we do well this season — without any doubt.”

Earlier in the week, Clegg dismissed suggestions of tensions between him and Keane over transfers.

well said clegg, now you need to go to the next stage and offer keane a further year on his current contract, the club needs stability, and it just might shut up the neo-budgies on here

Although this will be obvious to anyone with any knowledge of the game it is an attitude that is sadly lacking at many clubs today where the owners and fans expect instant success.

It is good to see that the management of our club appears to be in safe hands. At last we seem to be running the finances in a responsible way whilst at the same time building a squad of players for the future.

Clegg you wally, you say on one hand that a manager needs time, you then say he must do well this season. Idiot.

TractorRoyNo1 - Yeah Keane should be offered an extention on this contract.
Also Norris needs a new contract I think I heard his current one runs out at the end of the year like Keanes.

Mind you I wouldn't be saying Keane needs an extention if you asked me last month before the middlebourgh game.

pennblue - I think he means historically, i.e. Keano has needed the past year to get the team into what he wants, and regarding doing well this season it would be suicidal of him to say "Roy can do what the hell he wants, he has all the time in the world" (breaking into song of course!)

Roy keane is the luckiest man in football to still have a job! He was a disgrace last season and despite the good start I still want the thug gone! I wasn't saying we should have gone up last year but the fact is we were in a better position with Jim and a weaker squad!

Orwell would be proud of you...

Orwellian English unravelled; Promotion or the sack

Keane is quoted as saying he wanted to keep Stead who has been sold this week for £225,000... so this comment...?

"Earlier in the week, Clegg dismissed suggestions of tensions between him and Keane over transfers."

I can imagine the conversation....

SC "We're selling Stead"

RK "But I need him"

SC "He's gone"

RK "OK fair does, righty ho.... bye bye Steady"

Still if we gain promotion this season everyone is completely forgiven and can be deemed to have tremendous skill & foresight.

Whilst I have picked up on what I believe to be double speak, the club trying to run on a sound economic footing is to be applauded, I just hope we are paying our dues to HMRC!

IF HE IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE BACK HIM IN THE TRANSFER MARKET THEN,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,???????

I am not a fan of Cleggy and don't think he has been of any benefit to our club, I do however thank him for trying to clear the air with RK. One of the reasons this club used to be able to 'punch above its weight' was managerial stability - Sir Bobby Robson being a great example of this. I welcome the news that RK is to be offered the same opportunities but he will only succeed if he is financially supported in the transfer market. If RK has done all he can to identify the necessary changes, it is only fair that those controlling the purse-strings wake up and start doing there job - we all know the areas that need strengthening, so quit talking and start acting Cleggy before it is too late.

Back him with some cash for some signings then. And while your at it give Norris and McCauley a new contract. Talk is cheap, unlike our owner! Come on Marcus help Roy out before we get a few injuries.

Then why the hell did you sack Magilton after 2 weeks?

ChambersM.......why do you call him a 'thug'?
I wouldn't say I'm his biggest fan, I neither like nor dislike the guy, he's our manager & I'll support that manager, but I think it's very disrespectful to call the guy a 'thug'.....don't you?

I think it's fair to say that RK has been given time now. We've had a good start and long may it continue. It's premature to be giving him a new contract however. As someone else pointed out, a month ago it was a very different story...

It is important that we bring in new players however I suspect that there is a cunning plan behind this that involves bringing in loans after the Premier League Teams have finalised their squads next week.

Its important to bring the right players in and as I have said before, it isn't really fair to judge until you know what players RK has identified and whether these are realistic. There are a lot of very average players out there with very high price tags and wage demands...

Keanes doing his job yes Clegg, now bloody do yours and get some players signed. and Crock , if magilton was still here we'd be in a worse state now.

Pendejo is right. Orwellian double speak. To say in one sentance you need to back your manager and then go on to say Keane needs to prove himself this year is worthy of Alistair Campbell and Peter Mandelson combined.
It shows a remarkable twisted thought process which usually means someone is telling lies and trying not to say what they are really thinking/know. For example if he is trying to hide the fact Keane is doomed or has already said he will not stay beyond this season.
Mind you, there is nothing so fickle as a fans support for a manager.
It is early days and the success we have had so far, whilst welcome, does not yet mean we have reached the promised land.

disrespectful to call him a thug? I dont think so....i know you will all have a go because its 'all in the past' but he was a nasty piece of work as a player and i dont want some1 like that managing my club, cos thats what it is, as much as it is yours.

ChambersM I am very suprised at your comments particularly when Magilton is the man who put ITFC in the mess they were in when Roy Keane took over. Magilton bought average players on inflated wages and then gave 3 of them contract extensions i.e. Quinn, Counago and Garvan all players nowhere near good enough if we wish to progress. He also bought Stead and put him on massive wages hence the reason Roy had to get rid and then of course there is that wonderful signing of Kevin Lisbie. How can you justify that we were in a better position when Jim was here ? In my opinion the future looks bright which
something we have not been able to say for a long time.

It's all very well to be shrieking about the transfer situation, reviling Clegg and calling him names, but how many games have we lost this season so far, eh?

It's only your opinion what players are needed and in which positions. How do you know who's been identified and what negotiations have taken place? Or whether targetted players have made outrageous wage demands?

It's all very well telling someone else to spend their money freely ("Marcus open the pures strings" etc.), but would you throw away your own earnings on overpriced goods? Especially with the risk that they could turn out to be rubbish after all (or their WAG doesn't like Ipswich, or whatever). I'd hate to have some of you as a financial advisor ...

If Clegg was as incompetant as some of you seem to think, how come he's acheived so much in his career already? And why would a successful businessman such as Marcus Evans continue to employ Clegg to run his football club? Could it perhaps be that he's doing a good job??

So,
Cardiff are now about to taken Andy Keogh on loan from Wolves for the season, as he doesnt wanna be 4th in line for a place there, so does the free up/pave the way for a Chopra move, or is his injury a bad'n?
