Jewell on Goals on Sunday
Sunday, 30th Oct 2011 09:27

Town boss Paul Jewell is one of the guests on this morning’s Goals on Sunday (Sky Sports One/HD1 11am).

Jewell’s former Wigan defender Arjan De Zeeuw will also be on the programme, which is presented by Ben Shepherd and Chris Kamara, under whose management the Blues boss worked at Bradford before succeeding him at Valley Parade.

Bloody hell! Was Jewell tactically inept when he found the diamond formation, went 6 games unbeaten and kept clean sheets away at West Ham and Middlesbrough? (First team in 22 matches no to concede at the Riverside)

Instead of all having a go at the manager which seems to be footballs favourite new trend, why dont we support the team? I know supporting the team is a new concept to some fans but if you give it your all it can be, god forbid, quite fun and enjoyable.

We play a very average Doncaster next week who dont have that much pace, since it's pace that tends to kill us we would seem to have a chance so why don't we get behind the team for the next game and then all get over excited when we go 1 point off the play-offs or whatever the new excitement trend is.

You're doing a good job overall Paul but need to take another look at the way we are defending, I'm sure you know that anyway, good luck, I'm sure better times aren't too far away.

S6blue....and all those others who constantly spout rubbish, if you're so tactically clued-up, what do you do for a living? How many teams have you got promoted? What's your win record with the clubs you've managed?

prefer if he was on training pitch getting new formation than being on tv. last few games not good enough give young hungry players a chance. we r too much like dads army at the moment in more ways than one

He was booked weeks ago, he was obliged to turn up today, he asked not to. I wouldn't want the players training today...even if they've lost, they need a rest.

I agree BigFootBlue but Jewell got it wrong yesterday as he did against Palace, both winable games. My main concern, although i'm a big fan of Paul Jewell is how obvious the mistakes were and that there was nothing on the bench to change it when we have a squad of players who offer a completely different approach to a line-up.

s6blue - good suggestion - but of course you've been knocked already by the fraternity of support who would still have been quite happy had we lost 10-1.
Too many of those kind of supporters at this Club, for the Club to need to be successful I'm afraid.

ahhhh we're supposed to win EVERY game ! If you get in a hissy fit if we're not winning every game 5-0 why don't you go and support man city ? Even the best teams in the world aren't brilliant every game, did you not see man u last week ? Are you going to have a go at Fergie for getting it tactically wrong ? Don't think so :)

The point about the diamond is it worked for a few games - everyone congratulated PJ. Quite right. But recently, it has failed - although we managed to beat Pompey we were poor. In the past three games we have been rubbish and it's clear PJ had no Plan B. People on here can not have their cake and eat it - when we win, the 'negative' folk are supposed to eat humble pie - but when PJ get's it horribly wrong, we are only suppose to focus on the good games - ignoring the dross? Sorry - but no. PJ got it WRONG yesterday, last week and on countless occasions during his reign (Norwich, Peterboro, Reading, Watford, Southampton, Nortampton, Swansea, Leicester etc etc etc)

We had a decent run - but so did Jim and Roy - inevitably though we returned to the utter rubbish before the runs. Overall there has been more rubbish than good under PJ. For anyone who wants to argue that - just have a look at how many times we have conceeded (and lost) by 3, 4, 5 and 7 goals under PJ. Then see how many other managers have delivered such thrashings in just 9 months. Answer NONE.

Bottom line is PJ should get the credit when we do well - but there has also been a considerable amount of rubbish and as such people are right to blame the manager and comment accordingly.

PJ has to do better and address the key issues ie. lack of pace in midfield and the fact he has signed far too many injury prone has-beens who are over 32 years old!

Rather than appear on Goals on Sunday - would suggest making the players train today - whilst PJ sits down and considers another option other than the diamond which has now been worked out.

iTFCSparklepants - were you at the game yesterday? The first half was nothing short of a disgrace. We couldn't string 2 passes together, we let men run off us, we backed off, we didn't close down, we had no movement we were atrocious.

I think given all of this, we are well within reason to voice concern on a forum. No-one expects to win every game but after 2 p**s poor turnouts we at least deserve a reaction....and we didn't get it so yes, although i'm very much backing Jewell, he does deserve criticism for that shower yesterday.

ITFCSparklepants - agreed; we will not win every game, but don't compare Ferguson to PJ! One or two poor performances and one or two heavy loses per season sure - but as I said above look at how many thrashings we have taken in just 9 MONTHS under PJ! There have already been too many thrashings - three already this season and many last year. It's not been good enough recently and overall the season has been average at best. Some good / some extremely poor showings - but more poor than good. Overall Ferguson at United has delivered good results - just the one thrashing in about 5 YEARS. PJ has delivered many in just 9 MONTHS. No comparison I'm afraid.

its just not good enough he has been given a few quid 2 spend but its all going on wages 2 ex prem players. Find young hungry players even if it takes 2 yrs to go up. Still think we have a few who aint getting a game. o connor whight hyman murray & lavery for starters

People may say that the team isn't good enough, but the point is that is it better than it was before Jewell joined! We were 19th when Jewell took over, and Paul took us up to 13th by the end of the season (20 points clear of relegation). We are currently 11th so that is further progress, despite the loss of key players in the summer, and despite spending less on transfer fees than we received. It's a tough league and lots of teams think they should be in the top six, but so long as we are heading in the right direction I am happy. Let's get behind the team I say rather than keep critising the manager.

Just a point on the 'thrashings' we got beat 9-0 under 1 manager who managed to turn the poor defence around by playing attacking football, however it took years to get it right. Jewell has attempted to make the defence right, the only issue I had was giving Delaney a new contract. He's bought in 3 players that challenge for a starting berth in the centre of defence, plus a first choice lb and young rb. What more can the guy do?

Glad someone has a sensible view on life at PR ! We do not need the perpetual doom - mongers who do not even have half empty glasses !

Gilesy -- i m all for backing Jewell but yesterday it was just all wrong. How can you play a midfield diamond which relies on full backs attacking to provide any kind of width and then play kennedy?

jas0999 is spot on here.

PJ did great to find the diamond, but come on a 10 year old wouldn't make this mistake... If something becomes predictable then u change it ffs.

warned vs Pompey - no change
suffered vs Palace - no change
slaughtered vs Millwall - change maybe???

If we lose next game but he tries something different I won't mind, but if we lose with that diamond...

A diamond with kennedy as the Left back - Errrr dont think so
Lets look at the Left side options - O Connor , Whight , Carson

I didn't go yesterday but by all accounts Stockdale saved us from a heavier defeat and was our best player.

I am fan of Jewell but he needs to mix things up tactically and he just does not seem able to do that. 3 horrendous league defeats already this season is completely unacceptable.

We have no pace in the side and teams with no pace end up going nowhere. Why is Carson not even on the bench?

I can't see why Leadbitter plays in an advanced midfield postion - no goals, no assists after 14 games this season and he lacks pace and his passing is very predictable. He hasn't signed a new contract and as a captain doesn't offer any leadership skills. If he is going to play, he should be playing in front of the back four.

Personally I don't think you can play Bullard, Bowyer and Leadbitter regularly at any one time as none of them have got much pace. I would go for Bullard because he can be a game changer and Bowyer because he seems to link up well with Cresswell down the left.

The Sky programme "Time of our Lives" with Warky, Gates and Cooper on Thursdsay night was fantastic. Didn't watch Jewell on the tv today.

So PJ has taken some thrashings, people say Keane never had us losing by that many. But the fact is Keane wasn't good enough and ultimately Jewell has proved to be a big improvement with a better win percentage.

Jas let me give you the option: Promotion or quarter/semi finals of the league cup? Stop going on about Northampton, it was a third string team.

Again, Norwich, Swansea and Leicester were LAST season with a very different team in a different situation.
