Jewell: No Repeat of Contract Situation
Jewell: No Repeat of Contract Situation
Friday, 27th Apr 2012 07:00

Manager Paul Jewell has reiterated that he wants to get the players whose contracts are up next summer committed to new deals sooner rather than later. The Blues boss is determined to avoid the situations which have occurred in the last two seasons with players’ deals allowed to get into their last six months.

Jewell said: “I think it’s important with the younger lads who have got a year to go on their contracts that, as Peterborough brutally said, ‘you either sign up, or we sell you’.

“This time next year I don’t want this again. I’ve had it for the last two years and it’s pretty boring. I was bored of you asking questions a long time ago!” he joked.

Jack Ainsley, Jimmy Bullard, Damien Delaney, Andy Drury, Nathan Ellington, Arran Lee-Barrett, Lee Martin, Jaime Peters, Ryan Stevenson, Joe Whight and Cormac Burke all have deals which are up at the end of June 2013, while skipper Carlos Edwards and Luke Hyam both recently signed new one-year contracts.

Yawn...change the record Jewell. You said this last year.

Actions speak louder than words, until I see likes of Martin signing a new contract I don't believe a word you spout about it

This can only be laid at Clegg's door.

Worst CEO in our history.

Martin a Drury would probably be the most crucial ones to tie down from that list, Stevenson still has to earn another deal as he hasn't had much time to get going yet.

this is the reason the Hyam should have been given a 2 year like Carson because now we will have to start negotiating with him again when we have only just stopped!

surely Jaime Peters will be moving on this summer, jewell clearly doesnt rate him!

So why was Hyam given only a year contract?

Problem is that players have power. If they don't want to sign a new contract but don't want to move what can the club do?

All good in theory to say 'sign or sold' but it's not as easy as that.

Last six months? We shouldn't let key assets get into their last YEAR! We messed up with Norris and McAuley, then did exactly the same thing with Leadbitter.

Looking at that list there is one man we need to sort out: Lee Martin! Hyam maybe, if he does well, but other than that I don't see anyone with a transfer value.

I have noticed that Evans seems to be sorting the contracts at the moment. Is this because Clegg is to busy with other stuff or has Marcus finally realized that Clegg is hopeless?

Agree with Pioneer

Why Hyam only given a year contract, will we offer an new contract in August based on his holiday !!!!!!!!!!!!
Does that mean that Smith has been offered a 2 year deal

Trouble is we've heard all this before Paul. I see Clegg is keeping his head down at the moment, has Evans had him silenced?

Specialk79 at last someone with sense on here. When will people realise despite ME pumping serious money into the club to cover the running costs we are still 60+m in debt. As a result we can't easily offer massive length contracts as technically this adds to the reported debt figure. Also has anyone thought players may not want to tie themselves down to long contracts and prefer to run them down so they get a signing on fee if they move on? In addition the last 2 seasons we have been too near to the bottom around Christmas in order to guarantee Championship contracts. Too many idiots on here think if a players name is mentioned we can just go out and sign them with no issues. It's not as easy as that!

Who out of those players would you push the boat out for? Like Jewel said no one ever rings me to ask about any of our players. It's only worth a longer contract if there is a resale value. Unfortunately we wouldn't get a million for the lot of them.

PJ said exactly the same thing last year ...

Not his fault though. Clegg is 100% to blame.

I take the point that ME has to balance the books and also accept that we should not be held to ransom, but if these players are not going to sign - they should be sold. Year on year we leave it too late - by the time we offer a contract the player has had an opportunity to talk to other clubs. Not good enough.

SouperJim added 11:10 - Apr 27
SpecialK79 does "getting behind the team" mean we should accept mediocrity? Aren't the "real" fans the ones who care about the success of the club enough to speak up and not simply blindly back the management, no matter how incompetent?

When things aren't going well, people are going to moan. If you can't cope with that, I would suggest that following a football team is not for you.

Keane left a mess at Ipswich. Jewell is sorting out the contract situations but people wont even give him time to do it. So sick of moaners, grr.
In jewell we trust, the summer will show alot

"As a result we can't easily offer massive length contracts as technically this adds to the reported debt figure."

Not true

The £67m debt from 2010/11 does not include the cumulative total of the players contracts. We have no money, simple as that. We were, up till a year ago spending more in players wages than we were in income received.

As the income received is likely to drop again from season 2011/12 (lower gates, lower season tickets) we will have to cut wages even further. That is why players are leaving and have stalled on contracts.

Some would say they have had it too good here, so it is about time things were a bit realistic. That will take another season so we will also have to be a bit more realistic about who comes in - and unfortunately, who will need to go out.

Jewell doesnt want the younger people to get down to the final year of their contracts? So why does he only offer Hyam etc one year deals? Actions speak louder than words and nothing Jewell says is EVER backed up

Garv added 12:12 - Apr 27
I'm a bit embarrassed that its taken a tin pot club like Peterborough to announce their ideas and contact policies for us to realise what we should be doing.

itfc1981 added 13:45 - Apr 27
Sindre, Jewell has said he has nothing to do with the contracts. No player should enter his last year of his contract if Jewell wants him at the club. It has happened under RK and Jewell. It is Clegg's fault that is his department.
