Jewell: Some Positives to Be Taken From Season
Jewell: Some Positives to Be Taken From Season
Thursday, 3rd May 2012 17:27

Blues boss Paul Jewell says there are some positives to be taken from the 2011/12 campaign, despite the Blues finishing 15th in the Championship.

Asked what he could take out of what he admits has been a disappointing season overall, Jewell said: “I think the way we’ve finished since the turn of the year, since we played West Ham. We’ve played some really good football at times.

“And some of the signings. Not all your signings are going to work out, but Cressy’s been terrific and I think Emmanuel-Thomas is starting to show the potential we knew he had.

“He’s probably a match-winner we haven’t had, certainly since I’ve been here, but he knows he’s got to get better, and he will.”

He says some of the players who were already at the club have progressed as well: “Lee Martin’s improved. I think Carlos Edwards, even at the ripe old age of 33 just seems to be getting better and better.

“I think there’s a bit of a togetherness about them, which probably wasn’t prevalent enough at the start of that bad run we were having.

“But we know that we need to improve, that’s me, that’s the staff and that’s the players. Everyone needs to improve for next season.”

certainly PJ!! undoubtedly we can score goals, but we need a prolific striker. goalkeeper, right back, and centre back are also essential! COYB!<3

We have a potentially prolific striker if we get him a partner and he gets his arse in gear.

Yep - there have been some positives - West Ham home and away, Barnsley away, Brighton at home and the performance against Birmingham home (my favourite of the season). However, there have been even more abysmal results and actually, although PJ points to finishing the season with few defeats, we actually didn't win that many either! PJ also delivered the worst run of results since 1993/4 (a PL season) and we lost twelve games conceeding at LEAST three goals. The defence was woeful, we missed chances and on the whole failed to build a team - JET/Cresswell aside (good signings) - we relied heavily on loans and older players. We finished the season one point and two places worse off than the previous season - this is despite PJ having a season and a half at the helm. A lot of his signings have already left the club. Overall it was a bitterly disappointing campaign, led by a manager who IMO is no where near good enough. It will be interesting to see season ticket sales.

As I have said before - I hope PJ ends up proving me and the other doubters wrong - but looking at his performance to date (which even he admits has been poor) - it's difficult to see how PJ will turn this around. I still don't like his one up front approach - better than the isolated striker of his reign last season - but still a bit negative at times.

Hopefully there won't be anymore excuses on here - PJ has had time to build and I therefore expect him to start next season winning matches. No more 'we need time to gel' - because that excuse - after a season and a half - is running thin.

Jas do you not think its worth doing whatever we can to accommodate, in my opinion, our most important player in Martin?

We know one thing for sure! PJ doesn't know how to sign decent players!

They've all been released!!

There is a report in the Times today that in the top division in England since 1975 the most successful sides have been those with the biggest wage bill except on the odd occasions where exceptional managers (Robson / Wenger , Ferguson /Dalgliesh) have bucked the trend. As we are going down a route of keeping down the wage bill it seems unlikely that Jewell will be successful as he is not an exceptional manager. We are probably going to have to get used to "mid-table mediocrity" or at best the odd sniff at the play-offs!

Garv, I'll give you my opinion - Martin is one who should most certainly be accomodated in the team - in his preferred, and best position.
He is most certainly an important, and good player - there are Managers and Coaches out there, who would get MUCH more from him too.

Mmm...Billy Paynter. What do we think of him?
Know little about him really. Must be hungry to rejuvenate his career though!

@keanish - Billy Paynter's early days were at Southend and it has to be said he was very average, I'd say stay clear.

Two positives : JET signing & Leadboots leaving ( although PJ wanted him to stay!) . Otherwise a poor season.

Fitness has been an issue this year. If they can all be bang on it for the start of next campaign, we'll have a chance.

2 positives:

- the results and performances under Jewell are better than under Keane;
- getting Cresswell, Drury, Stevenson, Emmanuel-Thomas and Chopra for about £3M in transfer fees seems good value for money.

Let's all get behind Jewell and the team. If we have a poor season Jewell's contract won't be renewed, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Last year was depressing and to finish worse sums up this season. I was so glad when RK left and was pretty pleased with PJ. I think his tack of old has been's is over and maybee in my Utopian drunken rose tinted world we can sign the players needed in the positions that have been begging for far too long and these are young enough to develope and not retire and disapear. I do sympathise just a bit as I am sure PJ doesnt hold the purse strings but not sure I can survive another close season of talk and last minute panick come August.
