Murphy Deal Difficult
Murphy Deal Difficult
Saturday, 7th Jul 2012 08:37

Town boss Paul Jewell says that as things stand it will be very difficult for the Blues to bring Daryl Murphy back to the club from Celtic for the season ahead on a permanent basis. Murphy, 29, impressed during his second loan spell at Portman Road last season.

Jewell said: “I’ve spoken with Daryl’s agent a few times and if they want a fee, with his wages, we just can’t afford it. It’s no secret that Daryl’s on a good contract at Celtic.

“I thought he did well for us at the back end of the season. We would be interested in Daryl if the deal was right, but I get the feeling that it’s going to be an expensive deal for us to do.”

He says the player himself is realistic about the position: “I spoke to Daryl at the back end of the season and told him that we’d be interested. But he’s a sensible lad, he knows that the wages he’s on at Celtic are beyond us.”

However, Jewell says that Murphy’s situation, like that of fringe players at Premier League clubs, could change the nearer we get to the end of the transfer window: “Daryl will be like the players at top clubs in the Premier League that we’ve asked about.

“Once they’ve had their pre-season, they’ve got to name 25 players [in their squad]. They don’t want to name 25 players in their squad [and let players go] in case someone does a cruciate and that player is out for a year. It’s a bit of a waiting game.”

Did very well for us last season and I think he would be good for us, However there has to left wingers out there just as good and far cheaper in the lower leagues plus we have Carson pushing for a place now.

Would like him back at the club but not at the cost of breaking the bank

Good player last year but agree we shouldn't break the bank to sign him.
If we can't agree sensible fee/wages we have to move on. Cancer him back for another loan spell

We should not pay over the odds for Murphy. He did well last season, but I suspect there are cheaper options out there. What's important is that the manager now has a Plan D, E and F - as it would seem a lot of our targets are unaffordable or have moved to other clubs - offering better deals.

most of our targets are unaffordable you are right jas0999,thats why we need to look for young players from lower leagues who have tallent and desire to make it to higher level , but as soon as any are mentioned people moan that they arent Rooney's ,Van Persie's ect ,... who'd be a manager ?

@ Tillz9 'Cancer him back for another loan spell' ??

I would be happy to see him back on loan, shame we can't sign him permanently though.

I'd be happy to leave Murphy, he done OK last season, but i can't see him impvoving anymore. Fuller and Davies much better options.

The ball's in his court. He's a rich man, if he accepts Championship wages then he will surely become a Town player as Celtic won't want a particularly large fee.

Up to you Daryl.

As Garv wrote the ball is in his court. If he wants to collect his high wages at Celtic from their bench or reserves then its down to him. If he wants first team football and still be on good money then he will come down here.

Let Murphy's big wages be Celtic's problem, not ours. They can pay part of his wages and let him come here on loan, or pay him off so we can sign him on realistic wages, otherwise forget it.

Murphy can enjoy a decent wages at Celtic, but nothing else. It seems he won't get into the team and the competition value in Scotland will be zero with Celtic certs to win the league. The bookies price for Celtic being champions is 1.04, so a £1 bet would win 4p! I can't imagine such a one sided league anywhere else in the world.

Can't say I'm that fussed whether we get this guy back permanently or not. He's had his moments with us but I've never felt he was indispensable by any means.

On another note, the headline just made me think of all the times we heard 'Bullard Deal Difficult' this time last year!

Did ok for us. Would have him back but not to break the bank. Maybe we should look at other options.

Move on. Very average.

Let's move on from this one please..we've got more than enough to cover the left side...i'd rather see us sort out the goalkeeping/defensive/striking positions...Murphy is far too average.

If I was him I would stay at Celtic sit on the bench and earn a crust... So if he chooses to do that cant blame him

I'd prefer a player with a bit more pace if i'm being honest. Would welcome him back as he has a good aerial threat. I'm pretty sure there are other better left wingers out there.

Not too bothered tbh. while he was decent, he was never fantastic last season. Would prefer Steve Davies.

He did well for us last season and is a good player at Championship level however if the fee/wages are too much, we move on.

Good player on his day.. but had too many games last year where he just disappeared. Would welcome him back on a free transfer with reduced wages, but there are plenty of other younger players out there we should be targetting !

So instead of building a carefully constructed team we wait to see whats left after everyone else has sorted their's!

No great surprise this is what the club is doing but having it confirmed is still depressing!
