Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

I feel sorry for Paul Jewell. He's got us playing some terrific football at times! It's just the lapses in concentration and indecisiveness that is costing us! I dont know much else he can do!? the team, when we are in full flow, look a confident side, We are more than a match for any team in this division.
On another note, i think they should re-name the stadium as 'Portman road library'. It was sooo quiet you could hear a pin drop! Even the commentator on sky said, Ipswich fans are not the most intimidating fans in football and teams enjoy coming here. Its good that teams feel that way about us. NOT.

Hi there beloved Ipswich fans! I just want to say that I watched the entire match on tv tonight, and once again they dissapointed me. Jewell still got Evans backing??? Are you kidding me!!! What kind of world do they live in at Ipswich for the time being? Since Marcus Evans took over the helm at our club, it has bin utterly sickening to follow this club. This from a man that has followed Ipswich for 30 odd years. If Evans backs Jewell after tonights performance, I firmly believe that the trinety of Evans, Clegg and Jewell, should all pack their bags and leave for good. Tonights team does not belong in the Championship, and obviously not in the Premier-League. Marcus Evans have a long term plan??? If you ask me, that plan have allready failed miserably. Many of you may say that he saved the club from financial ruin, but what is he doing now? He is ruining our club for good. Look at the stats, and we all will find that the Marcus Evans era has bin a huge let-down. PLEASE bring in new people from top to bottom at our club. I do not want to see my beloved Ipswich in the third tire next season. For god sake, kick the holy trinity out of Portman Road. Kind regards from an utterly depressed Ipswich-fan.

one final comment from me tonight as it is too depressing to read all of this is..... just over 16000 crowd tonight (i appreciate it was on sky) but the crowds are dwindling so as a business, Marcus Evans, please note it is not working! Fans are not stupid and if they are not entertained then they will not pay to watch. How much longer can this continue?

Its quite simple to see what the problem is, it happens every game I see them!

When we have our purple patches in 90 minutes we dont take advantage, like the first 60 minutes of this match.

When the opposition have their purple patches (some games more patches than others!) they do take advantage, usually because our defence give them a helping hand.

I have been supporting pj but I am now feeling that perhaps things have gone as far as they can, question is, who would come in? And please can we have realistic options not Redknapp!

PJ just sits there hands in pockets, what impression does that give the team and fans? Malky Mackay didn't sit down once, could here him barking instructions out all game. Now that is a proper football manager. PJ out I hav had enough, we have good players but are being played out of position and he will ruin them.

I'm totally fed up of this now. It's becoming very clear that a change is needed. I like PJ but how long has he had to sort out the areas that needed sorting? And none of it has been sorted! Once again we resort to a team of loanees to lift us up to mid table at best. Seriously how the hell is that progress? We may be playing prettier football but we are toothless. Why play one man upfront at home?
People say he needs time to turn it around etc but he shouldn't have anything to turn round! Supporting this club at the moment is like a constant state of dejavu. Same old same old. We are like a rudderless ship.
We are in real trouble and why is that? How have we got to be in this situation? I despair I really do.

One other note, (Sorry).

Edwards was absolutely outstanding today as opposed to Cresswell who has stepped off a cliff compared to last season. What has happened to that left foot?

JET just needs to look in the mirror, seriously look in the mirror and decide if he wants to work hard to be a top footballer like he can be, or continue to be the mediocre Championship player he is.

Talbs77 - you're right - the dominance of the first half should undoubtedly have seen us in an unassailable position - but that's not going to happen because we are so punchless up front, whoever we have at the Club it seems.
Tactics Mr Jewell ?? - the objective is to outscore the opposition - which thus equals points.

One of the few games I actually get to watch. The first half offered a glimmer of hope. I like PJ's personality and I really want to see him succeed. But after watching this game, I really wonder about his tactical skills. The players, for the most part, I think are good enough for a promotion push, but playing with just one lonely striker up front, a short one at that, and feeding him crosses is not going to work. The only time we looked dangerous is when we're keeping the ball on the ground.

Up until today, I thought our problems stemmed from complying with the financial fair play rules early while other teams are not, but not anymore. Sadly I have to say it's time for Jewell to call it quits.

Evans, show your face, give us suffering fans some hope, get rid of PJ & his bumbling coaches now & show some bloody leadership because we are heading to league 1 & beyond.

Right, he gives N'Daw his bus fare home , then he plays Willens who hasn't played a competitive match for six months and has only been at the club 5 minutes, that decision is absolutely bonkers. I am now of the opinion that the people running our club are clueless. Also, I reckon Willens will get promoted this season with Leicester city.

Talbs77 - that's exactly why JET is here - and not at Arsenal !!

TownOnTheUp added 21:54 - Oct 6
Tactically, Jewell could be out-thought by a chicken.

That's all I have to say. Team is good, manager is bad. No tactics, no flexibility, poor formation, poor substitutions, can't motivate, can't direct or give impetus from the touchline.

Talbs77 added 21:54 - Oct 6
I think theres an underlying lack of confidence and idea of what our best team/formation are.

What do the players under contract think when they see guys signeed for a month having hardly played get in the team ahead of them.

What happened to long term signings and no more loans? Has pj really been backed in the transfer market? Would you trust pj with a large transfer sum?

The clubs a mess! Makes me feel very sad as a part of my life I truly love and look forward weekly for the past 25 years is, at present, complete kak!

Last post got deleted. Must have been a tad strong so I'll try to tone it down. ME, to continually give your backing again and again, even now when we are already 4pts from safety is a joke. Nothing is changing. Get rid of jewell NOW

If you watch the Cardiff goals, Cresswell gives up on both occasions. I appreciate he is still young, but he needs to keep with his man, put them under pressure when they are close to our goal. Yes Loach really messed up on the first but if Helgerson had been marked correctly he may not have got to the ball before Cressy. PJ is being judged but so should the players. They played well for the first hour, so is it Jewells fault they switched off??

TimmyH added 22:05 - Oct 6
Yep chop change chop change, Jewell hasn't the slightest clue what his starting 11 is! particularly the center midfield pairing, how many permutations has he done so far this season in this area??
Another thing a majority of the games we play as the clock ticks down towards the end we get less and less assured (or should I say nervous) - there simply is no confidence there and no motivation by PJ on the bench (even my dad noticed this), he even sounds utterly defeated when taking interviews and the board continue to back him!!!

suffolkpunchdrunk added 22:05 - Oct 6
This may sound perverse to a lot of you and I may get slated for posting this but it looks like the only way to save our club and get a change in management is to not go to the next home game. Only a low attendance and a sharp drop in income is going to make Evans sit up and take notice and finally see what has to be done to turn our team's fortunes around.

Well where do I start. First half we were decent as we all probably know but the second half...what happened?! We started the half well and then took DJ & Wellens off and it all went pairshaped. I am fed up with my side letting a lead drop week in, week out. The people that still back Jewell are total idiots and need to realize we are in a massive state at the moment. Yet again we're leaving it too late.

Drury to be dropped. Utterly useless and the down side is that he is OUR player not a loanee. I'd drop Loach too but ALB is no better. Attendances are dropping rapidly, so a change now is needed now for certain. It's a great time now to kick Jewell out and find a replacement as it's an international break. Shame that the only banner I saw was at the top of the North stand.

Thankfully Peterborough lost....JEWELL OUT NOW. Before it's too late..again.

One important thing that nobody has said so far is that we are now no longer just a win away from getting out of the bottom three. That worries me. That worries me a lot.
The fact that ME hasn't parted company with PJ suggests to me that, not only does he think that PJ has enough to get us out of the bottom three but then also take us on to the next step and beyond. Now that worries me even more!!!
