Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

Mr Evans, are you trying to alienate us fans and insult our intelligence. We did ok in the first half and got a lucky goal. Second half was very poor and our inept manager has no tactical nouse to change it. One up front who is always isolated will not win matches.

At any other club he would have gone. Why not here?

He is worse than John duncan and can remember a protest on the pitch against him.

We have been too polite for too long and for everyone who does not want him Anymore stand up and be counted. Support the team during the match but before the match, at halftime and after show our feelings.

We are 4 points adrift which could easily go to 7 and where will our next win come from as draws are no good.

Enough is enough, come on North stand and everyone else, stand up and be counted and show our true feelings.

Jewell out.

After reading this I am truly lost for words!!!
This is the lowest ive ever felt about our club.
I really can't be arsed with it anymore.
Evans and Clegg have ruined our club.
RIP ITFC.

Us fans need to unite from now on instead of arguing.
Enough is enough!
It's time we made our feelings clear either by staying away or making our voices heard next home game.
It seems that Evans doesn't give a toss about our club or us fans!

Today I saw a first half where we completely out played the league leaders. players Such as jet, lee martin and Andy drury were playing with confidence and we deffended well although there was little to do. We also played some lovely stuff going forward then in the second half we couldnt get a hold of the game and two errors our keeper who, from what iv seen, has a had a good season so far cost us the game! I have seen enough in this game and in others I might ad to suggest Jewell doesnt just have Evans backing but mine as well!

I was hoping for 4pts. this week, but as usual we were let down again ???
To see McKay standing on the touchline directing his troops on the field and showing passion !! THEN you look at Jewellio is sitting on his Butt again with no passion !!! Surely Marcus you sit directly in line behind Jewellio, you can see this as well as us.
then you have a meeting after the game and say I am behind you,, pity you do not have a word with Mick Mills ??

For the first 4 days the captain of the Titanic was doing a good job - FFS wake up SC and ME and smell the coffee.

I have said it many times before, we have not played for a full 90 minutes under PJs tenure with the notable exception of Wham away last season. Layer on top of that our ability to ship at least 2 goals a game, settling the teams confidence by blaming a young goalkeeper and alienating/dropping out of the squad a new loanees who was involved in two away points.

For such a 'nice bloke' he cannot build relationships with his players.

SC and ME, my seat will remain empty until this mess is sorted.

First post on TWTD.

Question: if you played for ITFC, how motivated would you feel by Jewell's post match interview?

Leaders should lead - time to change manager.

Legend the staying away part has already happened, i heard from a reliable source the crowd was in fact 12,500 and not the 16000 plus quoted as the official figure.

When we lose, and its often i refrain from commenting until i have slept on things. Evans should take time out too, rather than showing his support straight after a game.

Back to the game and these are the facts IMO, we should have been out of site by halftime, but we werent. If matches were 60 mins not 90 would could well be looking at the top spots, but they are not and we are not.
The reason for this in my opinion is Tactics and the right subs to alter things. Carlos Edwards was my man of the match and was enjoying a good game down the right with the cardiff player Noone having no answer to Edwards speed and skill, so therefore it was inevitable that Mackay would address the situation ( i saw it coming and was surprised Noone came out for the second half ) anyway the change was made on 56, a change that had a big bearing on things. Jewell on the other hand seldom makes a switch that turns games in our favour.

Jewell speaks of the devastating affect of their first goal, maybe he has a point but i think its a shallow point.Lets face if a goal can have a devastating affect , then look at ours on the stroke of half time, scored with both hands and shouldnt have stood, not even Marodona would have got away with both hands.

Football is about decisions and fine margins and winning is a habit and so is losing. Years ago i was manager of a football team and we put a team together that was on paper sure bets to challenge for promotion, everything position occupied by players that would have walked into virtually every stating eleven in our division. we went the whole season until the very last game b4 picking up a first victory, and i believe so many games were lost or drawn because all belief had gone. Sadly this is the case we are now seeing at Ipswich, i like Jewell and i am desperate for him to do well, but sadly for us he has past his best b4 date and we need something fresh in.

But who? i know someone who "couldnt" do better and that is me. Wouldnt mind Brendan Rogers when he parts company with liverpool. JUst hope its not someone like curbishly or even worse Megson. the next appointment needs to be winner who hasnt been away from the game for long periods and not a TV pundit either, the last 2 were ...... coyb

This club is rotten to the core, the spine of the club from me at the top, clegg and then pj.they are all as clueless as the next one.they don't know what direction to take, one minute it's short term experience players ala bowyer, sonko then its younger players now its back to relying on loan players as they failed to get any deals done in the summer, very inept management and now it is total desperation.cannot see any light at the end of the tunnell as it stands.a rudderless ship heading for league 1 at this rate with these clowns in charge! Trouble is if pj goes who comes in,I fear same problems as at present IMO

What i find so depressing come midweek the same posters will be saying all we need is a couple of more players to complete the jigsaw be patient with Jewell etc. When will they see this is not a recent problem. Jewell made a quick impact but from then on he's had no plan, clubs dont get any success with a team of loanees. The Manager has to take full responsibility for the lack of motivation and direction on the pitch. Why oh why did he get the job in the first place. Keane i could understand but this clown i wouldnt let him manage a sweet shop. Fans will vote with their feet perhaps thats when Evans finally gets the message.

The majorty of posts on this board seem to be from younger fans who have not seen a decent Ipswich team and offer ridiculous comments.

Cast your minds back when we as fans managed to kick Kerr out and David Sheepshanks was made Chairman, result after a few years promotion to the Premier League.

This wil not happen now but it is no good shouting your mouth off on this board, get off your back sides and organise a petition. To get rid of Clegg and Jewell. For those of you who are Share Holders this is the year to make a statement at the AGM not sit back and make comments afterwards when we.are watching 1st Division football.

By the way the bottom 3 are relegated from this division for those commenting that at least Peterborough have lost a game. Are these the same people that continue chanting about the demise of Norwich, who gives a #%^* about Norwich we are the club in major damage of being relegated.

Get behind your team during the 90minutes that are played then make your protest after the game. By the way for all you long term supporters I have supported this club for 55 years and will continue watching us in what ever division we find ourselves in next year.

Firstly, yes it was two errors by loach but we defended so deep. At that point scared to attack even when we playing well.

No one making any runs in to the box from deep, going beyond the lone striker. If your going to play this formation play it properly or not at all. It is one where when we have the ball we should be breaking in numbers causing team problems but instead we are letting teams of the hook by not being bold enough and as such we pay for it later in the game. Is it the fault of the players or the manager?

Everyone on here is calling for PJ to go, fair enough. But as has been stated for long enough, PR is a NICE place to come and play. The atmosphere isn't intimidating, so the away team feels at home, a lovely surface & probably nice facilities. Lets stop being nice! Lets all make sure the opposition aren't made to feel welcome, get on their backs not our players backs. Hopefully the next manager will contribute to it

OK the town are in a dark place but I won't knock Mr Evans he saved this club from going under big time, and I will always thank him for doing that.
Paul Jewell is a far different matter he has brought in seven loans players, two of which are on a month contract crazy. Everyone apart from PJ knows the main problem at the club is at centre half, Chambers is a back up player as is Smith, he gets in for No1 goalkeeper a Watford reserve. The coaching staff are a joke all PJs men. I hate Jewell being in charge of my club I also said this last year. Please Mr Jewell fall on your sword and go.

Jewell isn't up to the job but he is not the only one to blame. Why did we play 20% of the season before we assembled our squad ? A lot of our fans have bought the whole "fair play rules" line from Portman Road and have been slagging off "greedy" players but funnily enough this week we bought in 3 players in 2 days with no fuss. Neither Evans or Clegg have any experience in football before Ipswich and that has made them a duffers brew. Evans has been honest enough to admit he is not a town supporter and I respect his low profile but he needs to grow a pair and dump Clegg and bring in an experienced football man who can appoint a young and up and coming manager. I agree with all those saying no to curbishley, megson and other assorted tv pundits.
