Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

Time for mass demonstrations. Enough is enough. If the powers that be won't listen to the fans, they need to be hounded out.

This is a joke, was hoping to wake up to Jewell having resigned or being sacked. We need this clown out NOW! Im with the others about the demonstrations, but it should be about Jewell AND Clegg.

Enough is enough is enough! Being manager of Ipswich Town must be the best job in the world! It's virtually impossible to get sacked!

I know nothing about football management, nothing about buying or motivating players, very little about tactic,s, but what i do know is that i will do a better job than this clown and i,ll even do it on minimum wage!
That has to save town a fortune, i think i will start writing a book on excuses in case they ask for my cv! well stranger things have happened, we actually one a game once! long time ago but we did win one honest!

been a lifelong town supporter all my life but i just hope sky don't pick another town game to show as i found it dull as dish water there was no hunger or fight in the players in the game it all started during the huddle when all the players were huddle down and there was jet stand tall above them did'nt look one bit intrested in it and that as a performance was pityful to only play one up front campbell had no support what so ever and to bring moshni on with only injury time to play shows jewell hasn't got a foggiest what to do and as for evans backing jewell the bloke must completely off his rocker because with that man in charge we are only going one way and that is not up its about time evans came out from the shadows and spoke to the fans who have supported this club like me all there life before they start to turn on him so do the right thing and sack jewell now and get someone who knows how to manage a football club and get the passion back into portman road and lets see the place rocking again

Guys, PJ isn't going anywhere. I said it at the time when 'Arry was supposedly coming. Absolutely no chance. This site perpetuates rumour. Deals are far more likely to be done when no one is talking about them - like Wellens, Campbell and even Mohsni (after we all thought the deal was dead). I want PJ as much as everyone else - ie. not at all - but we are going to have to get behind him for at least the next 3 or 4 games. Amazing to me that at Blackburn, Kean falls on his own sword rather than getting sacked at a time when they are in the playoff places. Wish we could say the same of our manager as we look to be cut adrift at the bottom.

i can't quite get my head around this ,there needs to be a change of manager now before its too late, jewell and clegg need to pack there bags and depart, i watched the game in tele last night also and the crowd were as flat as a pancake, we need to get a good atmosphere going down there and get behing our boys, i know we can get out of this mess with the correct man in charge

feel ill with the thought of my weakening club collapsing under any sort of pressure from average opponents.. The guts have been ripped out, and I see no way back with so many not wanted loanees floating around our once great club.. Bobby Robson will be turning in his grave

There are few more meaningless public statements than those produced by a board when backing the manager of a football club.

The gate last nite was around 15k, yes 15k! there was a time when i used to worry about getting a ticket, average gates then were 23/24k, now forgive me that is one hell of a loss in revenue EIGHT THOUSAND FANS GONE MISSING! that is what some championship clubs have as an average gatewe as a club/business surely cannot continue this slide, MR Evans please have a look at the books, we are sliding deeper into debt, YOUR debt!
As for PJ do the honourable thing and resign, do not screw our club for a pay-off, just admit defeat and go home up north and leave us to salvage our club!!

In these days of trigger-happy chairmen its laudable the Evans backs his manager when things are tough. HOWEVER even a blind man can surely see now the time has come for change. Whatever Jewell tries makes no difference and he is desperately trying different things in the vain hope that he finds a solution. The longer this goes on, the more likely we will be relegated. With the resources this club has, to go down to the third tier would be mismanagement of the highest degree.
Even if, by some stroke of fortune Jewell kept us up, there would have been no improvement since he arrived and we would be in the same situation again next year and WOULD eventually be relegated. There is no guarantee we would recover like Nobwedge and Soton did from relegation, especially given the current managements performance both on and off the pitch. The club is failing in all respects and losing their fans in the process, there have been numerous comments from people how they feel disconnected from the club now and these are people who have supported the club for years.
Evans must act now, sack Jewell get a manager in to take this club forward and make sure we at worst stay up as relegation will cost club(him)a lot more than his penny-pinching over the last year will have saved

I bet the dark lord is quietly chuckling to himself! - can anybody in the right mind tell me why he started a half fit Wellens in front of a couple of players who should have played (Luongo, N'Daw) - WHAT MESSAGE DOES THIS SPELL OUT?!? - before long he'll lose the dressing room, but no doubt our owner will still back him.
The worst times at Portman Road I can ever remember! - Jewell out!

jewell has said he will not go down the loan route.??, and that he will give youth a chance !.
He just does not seem to have a cohesive and structured plan of any note. Seems as if he is jumping from one failed attempt after another to alter the way he sets up the team. Surely with 20 odd months of being in control of the playing ,coaching and training of this team we should see improvement.

A few comments
Loach lacks authority
Drury lacks ability
Jet lacks effort
Jewell lacks ideas.
So many decent players have come into the championship this year and yet we don't seem to be challenging to sign any of them (Billy Sharp comes to mind). I think Jewell has had enough time now. Unfortunately there are no easy games any more and things need to change if we have any chance of surviving. We need a young hungry manager with fresh ideas and the ability to motivate.
That is all!

I Remember the euphoria when Evans took over the club how the hell has it come to this everything he has done has gone wrong. His money may have saved us short term but whats it doing now i ask. Where does this end when he pulls the plug? Sheepshanks walks away a hero a gentleman and a true Blue as some supporters see him. Ive said before they were handed a great legacy and totally screwed it up. We the fans have to watch our once proud club become a laughing stock and theres sod all we can do about it. I wont be content until i see Evans and his corperate logos out of Portman Road.

Can't understand why an unwanted and unfit Wellens was played in midfield. What message does that give to the other midfielders?
I have supported Jewell 100 percent so far but we are becoming a laughing stock.
Confidence seems rock bottom and we are now making panic loan signings.
Relegation under Jewell isn't a possibility, it's a certainty.
Jewell out.

Gutted as it thought we played well and yes loach was at fault for the first but for the second i thought cresswell could of hedded it but there you go thats karma for dj's handball but haha top lad ;) and big respect to loach for apologising can't think of many premier league keepers who would do that, as for jewell perhaps an ideal time to go because of the international break? COYB!

Wrighty_blue97... it was loaches spill for the first goal so his fault, but Cressie should have done better, he should have followed in ( for that very reason) Helguson followed in for that very reason and was rewarded with a simple tap in. When the ball leaves conways boot, cressie is the right side of Helguson, when the ball reaches Loach Helguson is yards ahead of Cressie. Keep going and assume nothing, this is all simple elementaries of defending. When i played, full back was my position and i would always follow the ball to safety, i expected the unexpected. What is being taught on the training ground? the fact is there are very few players doing their jobs properly, everybody should watch everybody's back. Cresswell should have been there first to clear away. this is not an attack on Cressie but just a simple defending error being highlighted. All these mistakes, would be an insult to school boys to call them school boy errors. Cresswell should have kept going for the second as well.

In the main they need to work harder off the ball, all very well playing neat football on approach to the goal.

On my macbook there is a mention of a Wayne Gretzky qote, " i skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been" . KInd of simple really.

all these losses , really puck your weekend up, dont they...coyb

How much more can we be expected to take, will it seriously come to demonstrations.
We are so poor, the comments on here about Wellens are so spot on,we get a half decent point(under the circumstances) at Brighton, and we bring in a player, only for a month, straight into the side who hasn't played since March, that's just brilliant Jewell.
We as i have said are full of loanees, all can't get in at their present clubs,Jewell has lost the changing room, that's clear for all to see.

So i wake up to hopefully read the news that JEWELL has been sacked,or had the decency to walk, and i read the headline,
Evans backs Jewell, priceless, what have we seriously become,we are a laughing stock, seriously lads, have we got to demonstrate, well i'm in if we do,this is the worst Ipswich have ever been,it's depressing,it's heart breaking.

They claim 16500 there last night (that includes season tckets already bought?) I see that Milton Keynes got 10,000. If/When we go down we will lose still more attendance and could be on par with the likes of MK (no disrespect MK). My point is that unless something is turned around pretty quickly not only will the club continue to fall apart on field it will surely be unsound financially. Then where will we be ?. Mr Evans is obviously more asute that I but unless something is done to address this then my fears may soon become reality. I do not normally advocate the sacking ( and please dont ask for PJ to walk as I am sure if I was suffering in my job I wouldnt hand in my notice not get renumeration and just go) but feel that there has to be some drastic action taken now

Well said tractor blue!!!
This club is a complete and utter shambles!
If jewell did his job properly in the first place he wouldn't have to bring in all these short term loans!
And with playing a unfit Wellens, what message does that send to our youngsters like Hyam?
Seriously guys, the man is so incompetant it's an utter joke!
Where does the club go from here? Will Evans address the media or will he get his puppet muppet to once again fill us long suffering fans with more lies and dribble?
It's really hard to believe and take in but we were better under keane!
We are making no progress. And yet our clueless owner still backs him?
Evans and clegg will be the demise of our club.
