Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

How quickly the Town fans turn on the team, and blame PJ for individual mistakes made on the pitch. We played very well in the first half, stringing passes together, and certainly appearing to have more than the 60% possession that the stats showed at the interval. JET and Carlos Edwards linked up well down the right, and Richie Wellens is a tenacious midfielder, adding bite and breaking up opposition play with ease and comfort. DJ Campbell harried and chased up top and will be fitter for it. How the crowd cheered as we outplayed Cardiff and finally got the goal our play deserved...

As expected, Cardiff came at us from the beginning of the second half and Town had to withstand heavy pressure, seeming to sit deeper and invite the bluebirds on. The defence looked fairly comfortable, with Higginbotham very vocal in his organising; something that we have lacked for a long time. JET had a glorious chance to make it 2-0, and only he will know why he went for power when placement would have done - more applause followed.

Then Loach made two basic errors costing us the game. After Cardiff scored their first there was nervousness in the stands as we feared Town might concede a second, and perhaps that transmitted to the players on the pitch. The players may not have the self-belief at the moment, and the fans have even less confidence in that situation.

At the end of the game there was a chorus of boos....why? For 55 minutes we were the better team, we simply didn't score sufficient goals to make it comfortable for ourselves. Our 18 man squad will hear the boos; were they directed at them? Probably not, but they will feel it more than PJ.

I have never been one to call for a managers' head, and will not start now. Whoever is in charge of ITFC will have my support, but more importantly the team will always have my support, win, lose or draw, as long as they are trying to win football matches. They were clearly trying to do that on Saturday.

Rather than spending time wishing the sack upon PJ and dreaming of who his replacement might be; would it be too much to ask that so called Town 'fans' get behind their team for 90 minutes?

I backed ME when he came to the club and voted for the take over. He has splashed the cash, and also picked some bloody awful people to come into the club. Keane, clegg....

I'm slightly now confused what ME is looking for with our club. He can see numbers of supporters are getting lower, the style of play is getting worse, loan players seem to not care and we havent used any youngesters recently and so what is his outlook on life?why pay for the training ground and the youngesters if we dont use them..

It must be that he is using the club as a tax reducer or something...and he doesnt really care what happens.

I think Jewell is out of his league, i think the players are not behind him and his training staff must be rubbish. Look at Cardiff a well trained, well managed team and everyone knew what to do and where they should be.. whilst going forward we had them on the back foot but instead we went for a draw and we blew it... the keeper was good at watford and you dont become rubbish overnight. My view is that the club is rotten to the core and only a major change is going to get us out of it. ME needs to come out in the public eye and state what he actually wants, he has to show leadership and get the right people in to do the job. If he doesnt do that then this club is going one way only... DOWN.... in more ways than one.

People are criticising Loach...and yes yesterday was his fault...but already this season he has saved us a number of times, like against huddersfield when he saved the penalty so we didnt lose!! criticism helps no-one

If we get Jewell out, who do we want to replace him?.

custard - I find myself agreeing almost everything you say. It's easy to say sack the manager and then everything will be alright but whoever the club get in, and that seems a more likely proposition with every game we lose, it will be a gamble and no guarantee of the success. If you are a real supporter that's what you do, sometimes even more so when times are tough.

Custard/Stringtheory times are not tough they are dire! We are on the edge of relegation and time and time again PJ has shown hes not the man to turn it around. It appeared to me that the fans did get behind the players during the 90 and only vented there frustration after the final whistle. It is the managers fault JEWELL OUT!!!

Bring back big fat joe role,he performed miricles with no money! No seriously that's who you need, someone of that ilk, because let's face it pj is hopeless even with the best intentions, genuine guy though.the only decent player at present in our team is captain Carlos, all the others need to look in the mirror at themselves and say to themselves to I really care as they are letting down their supporters and the town, this club cannot survive on history alone! Nobody has got a divine right to stay in this league, you get out what you put in and sorry, they ain't putting enough in IMO

I dont know Paul Jewell, he comes across as a decent sort of bloke. But when it comes down to the fact that he is manager of Ipswich Town, as a supporter I have a right to air my views, the main one being I think he should move on. Fact, the last team to beat Derby while he was their manager was Town 1-0. His record at Derby was 58 matches played, of which he won 12.

Watched the game in a pub in Chelmsford - with Town fans who are dismayed that Jewell is still there and moaning about the cost of watching Town.

Woeful goalkeeping, inept tactics and a lucklustre crowd just about sums Town up.

The club is rotten from top to bottom and we are deserving every bit of this. Complete mismanagement by all concerned. Jewell has to go!. End of!. He will never turn this around. The transfer policy has to be reviewed radically - too many players leave for nothing or have their contracts paid up. I was one of the few who never wanted Bullard down here - we pay his contract up so he can play "regular" football and after three games he announces his knee is b*ggered and retires - well, excuse me but why pay his contract up - surely how top notch physio and fitness coach knew this.

Division One (or three in old money) here we come.

For those who are saying sacking Jewell is not the answer, what is the basis if your argument and what evidence is there to show he has the skill and tactical nouse to turn this around. He is out thought by his peers in nearly every game.

People are seriously worried and that's because they love this beloved club.

Can you imagine if Roman Abramovich owned this club? Jewell would have been out of his arse months ago, and rightly so for failing to achieve what was asked of him!
You have to ruthless in this game to get anywhere, it's a results business and quite frankly we are not getting the results. It's not a new thing either, we haven't won at home since march 31st! That alone should tell you something.
The attendances are dropping, the atmosphere and feel good factor has gone completely, the fans are arguing with each other, we have premiere league match day ticket prices, we have no plan.
I would hazard a guess that at least 70% of fans have had enough, some are long serving fans that have simply had enough of pumping money in and seeing no return.
We are lucky to hear from our owner three times a year and thats only a few paragraphs if we are lucky.
And clegg? My god I despise that weasel of a man! He is rude, arrogant, totally out of his depth, and quite frankly a complete clueless idiot! Mind you he did get the turnstiles painted! God give me strength !!!!
So what's the answer? We take no more crap and lies that's the answer!,
It's about time we made ourselves heard!
I love this club and have done ever since I was a nipper, but I can honestly say I've never felt so low and depressed about what is happening to OUR club!
The nightmare continues........................

I have gone on record before as to having serious doubts about loach and especially his lack of presence. The first goal was, just maybe, one of those things that can happen to any keeper. The second was bloody awful. Doesn't matter if a keeper is ok when on his line if he never wants to move off it. Sorry lad, I don't want to get at you individually - and I am being inconsistent by doing so - but you look very uncertain to me as to the command you hold over your penalty box and the defenders in it. Which is a big part of the job, to say the least. But it is not really SL's fault if he's only a half-decent keeper. And yes, here it comes, the question that needs to be raised is who signed him? PJ's best choice, or the best option he had with whom he could do a deal?

lonelyblue added 17:03 - Oct 7
I'm trying hard to not automatically blame PJ in the not-very-clear conclusion to my post above. But someone is responsible for bringing in a very average goalie to ITFC. hope I'm wrong!

When will the Jewell lovers learn he is being judged on the last 20 months not yesterdays game. I dont agree with sacking the manager after a short time as some clubs do, Evans shouldnt have to sack jewell, if he's such a nice decent bloke as many on here say he would do the decent thing and resign.

Going to make a comment on this. For me Jewell's time has come to an end. With the international break this for me is the best time to get rid of him and start fresh giving the new manager some time to work with this terrible footballing side we have become.
I watched the game on Sky, and for the first half I was asking myself 'How the hell are we bottom three standard right now?' we had Cardiff ball chasing for the full 45mins. But at half time, I said to my mate you wait 2-1 Cardiff final score.
For me, taking off Campbell and Wellens shows how tactically inept Jewell really is. Why sign two players to change your side, and which it did, to then sub them.
The sub that should of beeen made was Drury for Moshni - who was for me very poor and flat tonight.

Loach had a stinker.
Edwards was simply class, and considering ive thought he's average for the last year that's saying something about the rest of the squad
Chambers didnt bring much to the table, lost the ball a few times
Higginbotham looks to have made us 'more' stable yet why does he always go long?!?! start from the back
Cressy was useless
JET brought more than usual
Wellens was composed
Drury just looked flat
Murphy had a decent game
DJ adds spark and injection of pace at last
Martin always giving 200% but lacks the final finish, and killer ball

Why on earth did we play 451 as well, Cardiff had so much time to build from the back. It doesnt take a genius to work out that 451 does not work

How refreshing to see a post with real sense and honesty ! Some of the posts on here are so idiotic in their content it is becoming pointless and a waste of time using the site :-
1 Avery poor referee ( some of his decisions were out of this world )

2 Our inability to put away our gilt edge chances

3 Our goalkeeper made two fatal mistakes each of which cost us a goal !

The so-called supporters do not deserve a football team when they are so fickle and lack balance in their views !

In future I shall be only using the site to obtain news from the site but not reading posts as they get so repetetive and boring in childishness and senseless comment !

You have to give it to PJ; he is trying to turn it round. The collection of loan players assembled need to deliver the results needed to save his job. This is not a strategy that has worked for anyone before. Although the game yesterday showed that there might be signs that we might be able to break the pattern the final result (a defeat at home) dictated otherwise. PJ might have the support of ME but it's clear that the paying public have a different opinion. PJ's problem is matching the obvious prime objective of avoiding relegation with bringing in youth players to lay the foundations for the future. This now looks an impossible task.

meekreech/custard. When we end up visiting the likes of Yoevil next season, which is gonna happen if things stay as they are, what will you have to say then????. The current manager, coaching staff & Clegg are clearly not up to the task in hand. Evans really does need to take serious action now if he is serious about our club, however, i,m not convinced he is anymore.

Excellent summary of the game. But for 3 moments, and games turn on moments, the result would have most likely been very different. JET's miss and 2 awful keeping errors.

However, the fate of teams and managers hang on these moments and we have had too many of them over the last 24 months to be more than chance. I can't see, unless we go on a winning streak, how PJ can still be there at the start of December.

As always at the game I give the players and manager my total support. However I am at a loss as to some of the comments which seem to say its ok we played quite well so don't worry that we lost.

Guys wake up and smell the coffee. The league is won and lost on points gained and points are gained by winning or drawing matches. No points for possession, shots on target or hard luck stories. Our inability to score enough goals and to defend is why we are where we are in the league.

And whose fault is that? Surely the blame is with the manger who picks the team and the tactics. Yes players make individual errors but who signed those players? I assume other teams players also make errors but they aren't second from bottom.

This club has gone downhill since ME came in. He sacked Magilton as we were only 8th and of course wanted his high profile manager. Since then we are in free fall. And now he is happy with the way things are going it seems.

Please Mr Evans stop taking us supporters, your customers, for mugs and come out of your anonymity and tell us exactly where you see our once great club going.

But as always I will support those who wear the shirt

I cant believe some people still find a case for supporting jewel , how the hell can you go 7 months without a home win , lose 7 games on the trot , even lose 7 - 1 and have 7 loan players in the first team squad and STILL expect us to be happy with the way he comes running out of after match meetings with evans to tell us he is still in a job , this whole situation is becoming a stand off between evans and the supporters and the main loser i am affraid is itfc.
