Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

Fook the tractor boy rubbish!!

We're our own worst enemies!!!

@mattwin - welcome to TWTD and well said.
i have been a supporter for over 25 years and never seen anything like it.
Jewell is without doubt the worst manager i have seen at this club for years (yes worse than even Keane.) However more disturbing for me is Clegg's role which has clearly been unsuccesful in the last 4 years and the reluctance of Marcus Evans to come out and speak to the fans directly and give us a plan for the future.
I am beginning to worry about ME's ambition for this club,my beloved club for over 25 years but surely the first stage is to get rid of Jewell?.

MEEKREECH, BOBBLEHAT, CARTMAN WHERE ARE YOU? Loans were a huge success... JEWELL OUT!!! Funny ive been told all week that these players were going to save our season. Even if Loach hadn't made those gaffs we were under so much pressure the last half an hour we would have lost anyway! JEWELL OUT!!!

This is nothing new. how many times have we seen this. Ipswich running the show for 45 or even 60 mins, but suddenly seeming to take a drop for the last third of games. Individual errors, collective errors. This club has noe longer any tradition for winning matches. Either we are down by one or two early, or we concede when we seem like winning. This was also the manner under Keane and partly under Magilton. But the fortress Portman Road was under Magilton when we onlky lost to watford during a whole season seems decades away. Paul Jewell seems like a headless chicken, signing player on loan, som for one month when we are approacing an international break of 14 days. What is the purpose. This club is on a no-stop ride to league one and way beyond. Lets all say prayers that we will get a new manager in before the next window som we can survive once more. And please let it be someone like Matt Holland, Frans Thijsen or Arnols Muhren, someone who loves the blur shirt and can tell these players whats it all about. Journeymen, average at best, like the men Jewell brings in for a month or three shold not be given the honour of wearing this proud blue, white (and discoustingly red) shirt. JEWELL OUT, and take Clegg with you.

In case i hadnt made myself clear JEWELL OUT!!! Tractastic your spot on ive been going to watch town since 1985 and he is definitely the worst. Clueless, naive, pathetically hiding behind Evans because he knows he'll never get another managers job after this debacle. EVERYONE NOW JEWELL OUT!!! JEWELL OUT!!! JEWELL OUT!!!

Please Jewell just leave, this is getting worse and worse. This great club is falling apart, we need to change it. Clegg and Jewell need to go. The whole club needs to sort itself out, we need new ideas, everything at the moment is wrong. Attendances have dropped to their lowest for years and the manager and players are not up for the job, with a few exceptions. I just dont know what to say anymore...

I think the most worrying thing is that our owner seems satisfied with where we are.

We have been defensively poor week after week for 21 months under Jewell and are conceding 2 goals+ a game now..this cannot go on much longer.

I sat there watching todays game (even at 1-0 up),expecting us to throw it away rather than expecting us to win it..unfortunately our owner doesn't seem to be wising up to the fact that we are in a serious situation.

Jewell, you are not doing our club any favours by staying..you really should swallow your pride and move on now.

Good point by steve1978 too re Evans's lack of support for Magilton - when we were so close to the play-offs.

His backing of Jewell has become a sick joke.

Jewell ive got no respect for you what so ever any decent individual would admit they are not up to the job. Please go and take the MUPPET FANS who back you. Evans you bought into history and legacy yet you are prepared to let it rot. Sir bobby and the Cobbolds must be turning in their graves so so sad for the true fans of ITFC. Im truely worried about the future of our once great club. Whats next weeks answer get more loans what a load of rubbish lets get Gary Glitter in as leader of the pack things cant get any lower at this club.

James1989 could you please tell me why we shouldn't moan?? I have got to be the most patient Ipswich fan ever but can see that we are going knowhere!! How many games does it have to carry on before we get rid of Jewell.. If this run had carried on at any other club in the world the manager would of been sacked!! It's not just this season he's a lucky man to keep his job from a very low par season last year! He done nothing in the last 4 months of the previous season aswell after Keane was sacked!!! He's had time to make his mark on this team, make it his own and he's been drawn into rushed loan signings. There used to be a time I'd beg steal and borrow to come and watch me beloved Ipswich Town, I'd rather stay at home and wash up on a Saturday afternoon and here we've lost again on the radio than watch us at the moment. I've had a son born 8 weeks ago and all my life I've wanted a son so I could take him to Portman road with me and watch ipswich. The rest of my family support Spurs and up until recently I would of fort hammer and nail for him to grow up surrporting the tractor boys, but part of me really thinks I should let him follow another team as it a wonderful game the best in the world and Ipswich Town are far from a shining example of how it should be played, He should look forward to his weekends for his team to play again not think here we go again another game where we will dominate for 70 minutes miss loads of chances to seal the win concede sloppy goals and lose

Lack of confidence, composure and creativity. I watched the game on sky as I live London and was unable to make the game. So uninventive when we had the ball. 60% of possession in the first half and little all to show for it apart from a goal that should have been disallowed. Quite frankly it was boring and we never really looked like a real threat. Very disappointed. Always wanted to support jewell to turn it around but I'm afraid if we don't have a change of personnel soon we shall be in league 1 next season. JEWELL OUT for me I have had enough!

If this is the case with evans then we are a first division side its as simple as that , we need a manager to clear out this rag tag band of loanees and put our own players in the side . i could see nothing wrong with sticking with alb , ainsley should be playing at right back , freeing up carlos for right side of midfield , ditto hyam , lawrence , carson etc etc , evans obviously dosnt read these comments , so the only way to get through to him is with your feet , i shall not be going back to portman road whilst jewel sits in the dugout , i suggest anyone doing so ..... well you know or you should do by now , what you are letting yourself in for!!

50% of the players on field yesterday are on loan. Except for 2 of them, the others have been brought in for very short spells and dumped in the mix expecting the magic touch. The magic touch there was but even that wasn't enough. What about pre season training and planning? What will happen in a month's time when their time is up?
If the plot is not lost than what?
