Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

Oh and one thing I forget. We have a corner at the end of the game, their manager is shouting at them. Our manager is standing there with his hands in his pockets and Loach is asking shall he go up. We had defenders sat back too...WHY?!?! It's the last kick of the game...clueless chicken.

Suffolkpunch sadly that is not the answer as they have our money for near on 13000 season tickets and in any event I will never desert my team whatever the circumstances.

Utterly depressing. Decent first half but apalling 2nd half and were totally out played.
2 years on and Jewellosaurus is taking us further backwards and its more and more likely to be League 1.
And whats worse is that he's happy to blame specific players and carry on.!!
Come on ME sort this out now.........otherwise we are going down?!!!!!

@Crossy72

yes I've cast my mind back to John Duncan, and yes let's put him in charge, better than both Keane and Jewell!!!!!!!

Gutted at the result

2 glaring errors by Scott Loach and we lose another match that we could have easily have won. No Manager, who ever he is, can do anything about players committing these sort of errors.

However, these errors occur week after week and something has to give and at the end of the day it is the Manager, although I don't believe that changing the Manager is necessarily the answer. It isn't as easy as that. Few supporters truly believe that things can carry on like this and a change has to happen simply to offer some hope that things will get better. I have no idea who should be the next Manager and quite honestly would not want to be the owner of the club and take this decision!

Unless we start a winning run (ie stop committing schoolboy errors, PJ will be gone by the beginning of December.

We are worse under PJ than we were under Roy Keane . We were worse under Keane than we were under super Jim magilton. We were worse though under Jim than we were under Joe Royle .Mr Evans , can you see the trend ? It's pretty obvious to everyone except you. Please don't just think this is about the first 10 games of this season . Anyone who was at a wet , miserable night at Burnley nearly 12 MONTHS ago it goes back much much further . We are rubbish ... Full stop!!!!!

if you keep Jewellio past ten games then it's next yesr's seson f*cked.

the Ipswich way is the manager recognises his positipon and resigns.

jweells way is to hang on at all costs and blema everone around him so that some dumb owner might let him manager again.

BTW for the last 25 years itfc have been in the top 6 20 times out of 25. Paul you had 5 seasons in the bottom six of the prem and was relegated three times. The Paul Jewell way is full of under-achievement and hoping on tommorw.

PJ tactics caused yet another town defeat. A bright and positive first half with our midfield bossing the game. 8 shots and 4 on target is good. Wellens and Campbell showed promise and Edwards and Jet were excellent down the right which could not be said for Cresswell and Murphy down the left. Higginbottom also solid and talking others through the game.
Second half read as per rest of PJ'S reign defending too deep and trying to protect a 1-0 lead at home. Can't just blame the defence as the midfield got deeper and it was a case of when they scored. Whittingham anonymous first half and run the show second.
JET faded by showed us that he has the ability to be a very good player at this level. Fans too quick to knock him for second half miss after he created the chance with excellent skill. Didn't hear a moan when Murphy missed a header from 5 ft first half.
Evans must act very soon . We are not capable of scoring two goals in a game under PJ. I think todays team would beat most teams in this poor league but no with this tactician

It's a shame Evans didn't give the same support to magilton instead of wanting the publicity of Roy keane. I like PJ, but he never should have come back into management, he was out the game for too long, and I'm affraid if we bring in somebody like curbs, we may still go the same way. Question is??? Has Evans got the bottle to sack jewell and get it sorted now, or is he just gonna let pj's contract run down and start again in league 1. Please do the right thing Marcus!!

This is a relegation team at the moment. The confidence visibly drained when the equaliser went in. Rather than think "it's a setback, we can still win this", it's" That's it, we'll be lucky if we hold on for a point". I said last week after Barnsley that Scott Loach didn't convince me, and tonight he has cost us three points. I'm not sure whether getting rid of Jewell will make any difference. We're so mired in mediocrity with the players we have (7 of whose contracts we don't own) that I don't think even a change of manager is going to keep us out of League One.

Hi again brave Ipswich supporters, I just wanted to comment on a couple of things that have come up in tonights forum. Richie Wellens should have not started, that`s obvius. If he`s match fit, he would be an asset. But honestly people, how much has he played lately? He could have bin used as a sub tonight, but not in the starting 11. Carlos worked hard tonight, and so did Martin at times. I`ll give you that.Other than that, nothing they did put a grin on my face tonight. We got a goal that should be flagged for hand-ball. After Cardiff equlized, everyone looked like they were shutting down. Jewell kept his lazy behind on the bench and did nothing. What a brilliant tactitian. By the way, Cardiff was poor tonight aswell. If the standard at the second tire in England is this poor, well then I do not know what to say. People here keeps repeating that we played well in the first half. The goal was a fluke, and JET had a decent shoot. I must have missed alot tonight, if the fact is that we played well. Or maybe my standards are to high? I know by the matches I`ve seen from the Championship this season, that the standards are not as low as what we witnessed tonight. These are professional coaches and players on high salaries. When people come to see them play every home-game, and some heroes also travels to away-games to see them, then you expect to be entertained. I can`t see we have bin entertained properly since Matt Holland left( at least). We keep selling our young prospects like Bent, Wickham, Bramble, Dyer,Holland, Trotter, and Rhodes to name a few. Thereafter we by rubbish or hand-me downs from the premiership. It`s not right people, it`s just not right. The club is in a rot, and it`s deep. I can`t wait to see Hewitt and Kouroma in action? Are they as good as Walters and Creswell( bargains) ? I really hope so. What about Hyam, Smith and Murray? Could they reach the same standards as say: Trotter, Walters and Rhodes? I`m not in a position to say so, but I can`t see it. For all of us I really hope that some huge changes are on it`s way to Ipswich, because if this rot continues then God help us all. Still hoping for a brighter future. Tractorboy `till death..

Ive been a town supporter for.20 years but im new to this website, it seems sometimes all anyone goes on about is "JEWELL OUT!" Im as annoyed as all of you with the results of late but tonight was as clear as day, two balls ups from Loach cost us badly tonight. Also @mattinlondon Jewell didnt bring us from 5th in the premier league to where we are now, pull your head out of your a**e.

Never been one to call for the managers head, but feel Jewell needs to go now. 1-0 up and controlling the game, AT HOME, then try to go defensive and the inevitable happens. So frustrating. No longer shocked when we throw away a lead and get beat, just disappointed!!

Hi this is my first comment on here ever. I would like to explain my situation as a Ipswich supporter. I've followed ITFC for 28 years avidly and have always kept the faith through hard times but really have fallen out of love with my football team. The last 3 years have been totally mind numbing, we have employed I think in the last 2 managers the worse in the clubs history! We haven't in that time been able to score or defend which are the 2 key elements in any successful team. We have no idea and in the 3 clowns who make decisions on the clubs day to day business never will. I'm sorry to anyone who still haven't had the penny drop yet we are in serious trouble. We can't attract good players, attendances are down and we can't win games of football. Prime example, 14 months ago we had a good chance of signing Charlie Austin a true goal scorer at this level!! All we needed to do is a bit of negotiation on wages and bang we would of had a fantastic goal scorer, but know we wouldn't do it. This is just one example of a terrible downward spiral for our beloved club

alfromcol. Is it luck that top managers produce teams that win? No. Alex does it year on year, bobby did. You can bemoan "player error" as much as you like. It does happen. But much comes from from confidence instilled by the manager. The reason our players make so many needless mistakes is because they get no confidence from the manager. Honestly, i am all for being fair. But the buck stops with leadership, they bring team in, they manage team.
