Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

Horrible loss.

Sorry to see Jewell throwing players under the bus, even if they did make mistakes. I thought JET looked better today and deserved praise (if anything), not being singled out for a miss.

Jewell also got outmanaged in the match: Mackay made excellent subs, while Jewell got his wrong. Depressing.

I also thought Campbell was poor. Missed a sitter after 15 minutes and--frankly--missed another for the goal but got bailed out by the officials. Poor instincts around some other good balls too.

Sad day again. I don't see light at the end of the tunnel.

The goalkeeper will take all the flack for today's defeat but it's a team effort and we didn't create many chances for a home team. JET had probably our best chance but fluff his lines. The players may be playing to save the manager but are not doing a very good job in doing it. The international break would be an ideal period to change manager and give the new man some time to see what sort of squad we have and work out how to get us out of this mess.
PS Chopra said that us supporters didn't know much about football but he certainly doesn't know about horse racing!
Jewell needs to go!

....and one more thing.............as Town Fan's we are thankful and grateful to Marcus Evans for supporting the club but even he has to realise change has to happen, other clubs are doing it and turning it around. Much longer and we will be cut adrift at the bottom. A new manager such as Big Mick or Curbs could work wonders with this squad who are good enough for at least a top 10 finish in the Championship.

We are the laughing stock of the Championship, the majority of these are Jewells players and he cannot get his tactics right.

Take a good look at Jewells background staff, Conference League !

as i live down in dorset, this game on sky was my first chance to see us for a full 90 minutes. in my opinion, we were very unlucky. Edwards was a class apart tonight, if everyone put in his fight and spirit we'll get out this rot. Martin had a good game too, constantly harassing them. dj looked lively, and we couldve done with him staying on for 10 minutes more while the pressure was on them. wellens looks very solid and was at the heart of everything we did. jet doesnt have a finish at all, unless the ball is 50 yards out, he cant hit the target. defensively we looked ok. better than i expected to see, but it was of course our frailties to crosses that were are downfall. i think everything is there, and with the likes of paul taylor to come back, we will climb the table. im not jewells biggest fan, but this is the best ive seen us play in recent years, as much as we have been bad recently, i think with the break, jewell can get results.

We were told in no uncertain terms that Loach had lost it at Watford and tonight he lost us the points for sure. Need loan number 8 now in the number one position as ALB is just as inep,t however I am sure he will be given his chance against Hull now bearing in mind PJs comments. How can our Club have gone so far backwards in such a short time ?. All we have after 10 games is a relegation battle. In most seasons the league table is measured after the first 10 games it therefore looks very bleak for ITFC then doesn't it. Its all so very sad and frustrating. I will of course support my team home and away until I die but having never watched Div 1 football it will be a culture shock and a complete overhaul of our once great Club. Sorry to be negative but whatever PJ tries to do it just does not work.

The individual mistakes are not due to a lack of confidence, they are due to a lack of ability and will continue to be made as the squad are one of the poorest in the championship.

I'm not qualified to comment on Paul Jewell's expertise as a tactician, what concerns me is that It is not obvious to me what the overall strategy is for the club. There seems to be an element of panic about three loan signings in a week. I thought that we were trying to build some continuity? My armchair opinion is that Murphy should always play as a central striker...not wide.

We need to sort this mess out as a matter
of urgency -
It seems that as soon as we take a lead in
a game he is intent on trying to defend and
attempt to scrape out a 1-0 win.
We have no plan B when things are going wrong
and offer very little going forward by
putting high balls in to the box with only one
up front.
There is little or no movement off the
Ball resulting in a very cheap turn around of possession that heaps Furter pressure on
our already fragile defence.
We can't keep on hoping that it will
turn around, when quite clearly under this
Management that it won't.

Norwichbeater, I agree with you. I go to Portman road and wonder why I both, while our once respected and great club is put through this public humiliation. Even the buggies in their current plight must have a smirk on their faces.

Agree CharlieITFC, I thought Edwards was oustanding, energy enthusiasm pace. The problem is were saying we've played well and having got a result but we have been saying that every week , we are four points adrift and Millwall beat Bolton today. Keep waiting for things to click and we could be seven or eight points away and things would look extremeley bleak then. This is the Championship as well not the Premier League where you know if you lose one week the likelihood is the other teams will too. Change it now, Forest did with McClaren, Bristol City put Derek McInnes in charge and both clubs have really improved since those decisions.

I'm not jumping on the sack band wagon, but for Mr Evans to back the manager so quickly in the current situation is an insult to the fans. At least he should let the dust settle after another poor performance and then pass judgement. At what stage does he not show his support, perhaps a hammering by Peterborough. As if that would ever happen!

"If only we'd take our chances..." There is a reason we're not and it's not just poor striking. There was a sequence late in the match when Edwards, JET and Martin played little triangles trying to work out who was going to get a cross in, while Scotland came short to give an option. Result: no one in the box to receive a cross even if one had come in. The system is wrong, the players need too much support to cover their short-comings, and the ethos is wrong. Depressingly systemic and not a matter of bad luck.

Well, I'm not surprised...I've now realised that this is the reason everything is so s**t, PJ is untouchable. There are no consequences for this poor form, so the Manager, coaches or players can carry on not giving a damn without the threat of the axe...hell i'd love a job like that.

Again we as Town fans are stuck supporting a club that we love, watching it dissapear into the lower leagues, and seeing the people who contributed to the clubs downfall get away with it. The Manager and the rest of this merry band of untouchables will still get their wages, payrises and bonuses while (even if we go down) the Blues faithfull will have to pony up more extortionate ticket prices to see this bunch of twittering goons take the club that we all love to the very depths of the football league.

Alright...I am pretty p**sed off at the moment, but I think that when you are passionate about ITFC we have every right. Some of you may dissagree but things have not felt right at this club since Burley, at least he had the Ipswich spirit and spread it to the players win or lose, now we have Chopra telling the loyal fans that we don't know anything about football when were paying off his gambling debts, JET refusing to talk to the fans on twitter (well maybe you can do more training than tweeting). I don't think that this would happen under Burley, Lyall or Bobby (G.R.H.S), they knew the life blood of the club was the thousand of fans who buy the tickets, the strip, the programmes and cheer on the blues every match. Sadly this new dawn at Town is not what the Cobbalds dreamed of, we will never see seasons like 81 again under this regime.

To all the fans who's hearts are breaking over the clubs plight..your not alone..but what the f**k can we do about it, nothing until there are 100 people left in the stands, then they may take notice, but that will never happen.

Ipswich til I die

Tactically Jewell doesn't have a clue. We have now not scored 2 goals in a game for the 18th game out of the last 20. Is this any surprise, of course it's not! ! ! As his formation remains negative game after game, he cannot affect a game positively with substitues and he changes his players every game.

I remember the best sequence of results we had under Jewell, when he first took over and used virtually the same players week in, week out.

Time to change the manager as we have capable players at the club.

Let's face it practically anybody can beat anybody on their day in this league, Charlton (who we thought were rubbish coming into this league) beat Blackpool away, even Millwall beat Bolton and this means a slight gap has developed form the relegation places to the next. A lot of the bigger teams that have come to Ipswich this season Blackburn, Wolves and Cardiff have come across as pretty ordinary, what you do need to get towards the play-offs is consistency, a settled team and confidence to eventually amass points even though you'll know you will lose games - unfortunately we have a problem we don't have any of the fore mentioned qualities and can't win games. Houston we have a problem!

I do not understand. They make, on the face of it, brave decisions to sack jim when we are upper mid table. I agreed with this, as i thought jim had not elevated himself from being a player. I also bought in to the evans publicity. Then, We sacked keane, because we were dull, inept, horrible to watch (but not often hammered). Should never have been appointed in all honesty, only people who do not know the club would have done it. But, now, we do not sack jewell, who i think has presided over a team which surely must be the most inconsistent, defensively leaky inconsistent team in recent memory, which now also cannot score goals. Also, one that seems to go on massive streaks that will break records in all departments at some point, goals against, losses on trot etc etc. It is crap. It is not helped by the likes of chopra and thomas, who pay your wages? Chopra, with his baggage and lack of goals, makes you realise exactly why cardiff got rid. Marcus evans, not only do you have a crap swing, I am now wondering about your business acumen, (in all likelihood incorrectly as i do Not see it from your own personal point of view, just ipswich). I suspect, however, you are charging massive interest on a debt that did not cost much in real terms (almost repaid back by connor transfer fee), and you could not give too much of a crap about the rest of it whilst you can move losses around your group for tax purposes. Eff off. We do not need you. It is a myth we do.
