Murphy Signs New Deal
Tuesday, 1st Jul 2014 17:38

Striker Daryl Murphy has signed a new two-year deal with an option for a further season. The 31-year-old scored 13 goals during 2013/14 and broke back into the Republic of Ireland side for the first time in nearly six years after joining Town on a permanent basis last summer, having previously spent three spells on loan.

“I’m really enjoying my football here so I’m obviously delighted to have signed a new contract,” the former Waterford United, Sunderland and Celtic man told the club site.

“I’ve said before, Ipswich Town feels like home for me — both on and off the pitch. My family love the area and that’s very important to me.

“We are making progress as a football club and the challenge now is to continue that next season and hopefully get into that top six. That’s the target.”

Excellent news, a player who loves putting on the blue and white shirt, loyal to the club. Hopefully he has a season as good as the last, COYB!

This is very strange in my eyes! As we never offerd deals like that too Norris & McAuley, they probably wanted 3 year contracts, and I'm sure we only offerd them
One year's.

In the last few days there has been more good news than the whole rest of the summer put together!

I think these last few days have said a lot about where this club is now. It doesn't feel short term. It's not a case of signing people for 3 months or waiting around to see where we are in 6 months before deciding anybody's future. We've got a manager and assistant who are committing themselves to stay here for several seasons, they know who they want to keep hold of and are making steps to tie them down so that we can build a squad that lasts.

After a string of relatively short-lived managerial reigns not in keeping with this club's history, and after the overall short termism of the Paul Jewell era in particular, the present-day Ipswich really is a breath of fresh air.

The club feels much more professional now. It hasn't felt like this for a very long time - Lyall era?

Firstly, it is pleasing to see we have finally learnt and are securing deals for our own players now, rather than letting contracts run down. Personally, I am not a Murphy fan. Never have been ... But that's sport we all see things differently. We all have favourite players. That doesn't mean I don't admire Murphys attitude and work rate. I do. I just don't think he will score enough goals if we want a promotion challenge. However, he deserves a new deal for work rate alone.

Normally I might worry about giving a 31-year-old striker such a contract, but Murphy's attitude and work rate are excellent and I am sure he will reward the club and the fans. If Henshall and Stewart can put some decent crosses into the box, it could turn out to be a good season for Murphy.

I know some people do not rate Murphy but we sure miss him when he's not playing!

For me another good piece of news to complement the signing of Cameron Stewart. Although never prolific, Murphy always runs his socks off. Maybe with our new wingers supplying the ammo he will find the net a bit more consistently.

Good news. I think Murphy is underrated. The hard work he puts in can sometimes go under the radar. When given good service he's pretty effective.

The likes of McAuley, Norris and Leadbitter were on, for us, big contracts, so the option to let them run them down worked for both sides, we could not offer them the same terms.

With FFP, the terms offered to our players today will be considerably lower. Murphy, at 31, and settled in Ipswich, will no doubt ask for much lower wages, for a two year deal, than players would have asked for a few years ago.

Securing Berra and Mcgoldrick on longer term deals will be more challenging though.

Great news as murphy really stepped up when didz was out injured and the improvement he has made has been brilliant. Another thing to bear in mind is if he'd been on pens instead of didz he would have prob scored the same amount, if not more than didz

Good news. I like Murphy's work rate, he had a great season last year. I assume with this signing we will not be adding to our attacking options? No truth in the Korean Kim Shinn Wook, that would be exciting news

Hopefully McGoldrick has a new contract ready for him to sign when he returns from America next week! Refreshing to see the club secure the long term futures of the management staff and now hopefully some more of the key players. Berra and McGoldrick only have a year to run so those 2 next please!

If Myrphy can get a couple more than last season, and Didz hits 20 goals we'll need a couple of midfielders to chip in with 5/10 goals and another 10 goal a year striker to maintain a promotion push

Really happy about this, Murphy is one of my favourite players, gives his all for the team with a good return as well, a real model professional

Mick has certainly got stuck in since his return from holiday recently.
Would still like to see him allowed to spend some money though;but think only need another couple of players.
We always have this optimism at the beginning of a season naturally, even before a ball has been kicked;so not getting too carried away as this season Championship looks tougher than ever.

Whose option? The club's or Murphy's?
