MacAnthony: Taylor Could Propel Town to Premier League
Monday, 26th Jun 2023 20:17

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes new Town signing Jack Taylor could propel the Blues to the Premier League.

TWTD revealed earlier this evening that Taylor, 25, was set to join the Blues on a three-year deal this evening for a fee of an initial £1.5 million with further cash due to Posh if the Blues are promoted to the top flight, the club subsequently confirming that the deal was done.

MacAnthony says he promised Taylor that he would allow him to move on this summer having rebuffed three Town bids in January, the highest he has previously said was close to £2 million.

The Dubliner says the move to the Blues is ideal for Taylor, who had been at London Road since 2020.

“It was the right deal for Jack,” MacAnthony said in a video on social media. “It was the right deal for our club and I agreed 36 hours ago the final fee, the final bits and pieces. It’s an incredible deal for us, it’s a great deal for Jack, we wish him well.

“To all those mugs in the Championship, who didn’t come in for him, you’ve f–-ed up, like you did with the Ivan Toney deal a couple of years ago when you could have come in for him and you didn’t.

“He is one of the best young central midfielders outside the Premier League, and I firmly believe he could propel Ipswich on a Premier League promotion run.

“Don’t want to get into a row with Ipswich fans over the price and the transfer and who got the better deal, trust me, I’m a bit like the mounties, I always get my man when it comes to a deal.

“It’s a phenomenal deal for us, it’s a great deal for Jack. As I promised him, my word’s my bond, I do it with my players. I promised him in January that we would do this deal in the summer and we’ve done that.

“I wish him nothing but the best of luck, love to him and his family, he’s been a brilliant player for our football club.

“And I wish Ipswich all the best. I am now a big fan of Ipswich and hope they get promoted to the Premier League because that’s worth a lot of money to us, as is the big sell-on, as is the great transfer fee.

“To Mark Ashton and Luke [Werhun], his number two and a sidekick, it’s been great doing a little bit of sparring with you, look forward to doing more sparring in the future.

“Enjoy this boy, Ipswich fans. This is a proper signing and this will propel you.”

Very nice and complimentary. If he's as good as MacAnthony says, looking forward to seeing him play for us.

What an idiot. Everyone is an idiot for not trying to sign Taylor, and yet Posh got an incredible deal. Is he saying we overpaid?

DM talks a good game. We do not need to justify our business dealings.

A phenomenal deal? We are paying £400k less than we offered in January. Why do Peterborough dig themselves such big holes. Hes worth £10m Barry Fry said last summer, £4m minimum in January and we get him for way less than half that.
But more than anything to me this says theres no money out there folks, no-one has anything to spend. Oh, apart from us.....

Don't have a huge issue with all this from MacAnthony, and plenty of compliments in here too, he's got a style that some may not like of course. Having said that I personally prefer we have a CEO who doesn't do this and just lets the accomplishments across the club do the talking.

Lots of contradictions, but a good watch. Clearly frustrated that more clubs didn't come in for him, which would suggest that he didn't get the price he was looking for…

He's full of BS isn't he. Bigging up what a fantastic deal he's got got his player yet in fact he's got slightly less than we we offered on the table in January . Yes he gets £500k when / if we make PL, but what's that in the grand scale of things?

Sounds like he is spinning this to hide his own shortcomings.

Say what you like about DM he's just doing the best for his club and although I suspect he's got a lesser fee than he wanted right now, he's almost certainly got a lot more to come when we make the EPL or sell JT.
That said I also prefer MA's style but “horses for courses”. Buyers are usually more closed lip than Sellers and MA can afford to be circumspect as he's got access to loads more money than DM.

Well said Europa, real lack of class from DM.

I have friends in Peterborough and they tell me that the fans are very p***ed off with MacAnthony and think it's a crap deal!

If you look at it from a Posh point of view they did not want to sell him in January as they had hopes of promotion themselves until Hillsborough! Now, they have little choice as he is out of contract next summer I believe! Personally, I thought there were better options out there but I'm pleased to be proved wrong!

This guy is an absolute clown. One week he's saying "don't expect it," and the next he's saying that he had told JT back in January that the deal to Ipswich would be done in the summer. Then he's saying that other clubs have missed out and should have come in. Make your mind up! Seems like he's trying to placate everyone all the time.

“Looking forward to doing some sparring with you in the future”. Does that mean as part of Taylor deal that Peterborough have been offered first refusal on some of our players going out on loan or being sold?

Maybe a reference to a striker we may be also interested in 😀 in terms of their chairman - give him some credit - Peterborough is not a big club, but they play good football and have a clear business plan - yes he makes the odd comment, but I'm pretty sure we have done that in the past when we have been trying to get the best price for our players.
