Jewell Slams Martin's Disciplinary Record
Jewell Slams Martin's Disciplinary Record
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 12:34

Boss Paul Jewell has hit out at midfielder Lee Martin for his disciplinary record which has seen him pick up three suspensions since the change of manager at Portman Road in January. The former Manchester United man has been training with the reserves since being sent off for a reckless, if perhaps not actually illicit, challenge at Peterborough on Saturday.

Jewell said: “He’s got to earn the right to start training with the first team again because I’ve had enough with his disciplinary record. It’s not as if he’s the most battle-hardened midfielder, is it?

“I don’t mind players getting booked for honest challenges, but Lee’s are always silly and petty. I’ve had enough of that nonsense.

“Whether his was actually a sending off is debatable, but he’s given the referee the opportunity to do it.

“It was not a very mature tackle and the fact that he got clapped off afterwards really winds me up.

“Lee is a player who has done well for me, but he missed too many games for me last season due to indiscipline and now he’s going to miss another three games.”

Last season Martin was booked 11 times and sent off for a rash challenge at Bristol City. The 24-year-old faces a three-game ban for his latest dismissal.

I think this is a bit harsh to be fair, unlucky to get sent off and has been playing well.... on the other hand, I wouldnt be talking to Smith, Delaney or Ainsley at the moment!!

Jewell, that's the last straw. Resign.

Hopefully this will rub off on some of the other so called 'players' at the club. Too harsh on Ainsley tho ^^ as his debut and played out of position. Not a recipe for success!

Training with the reserves?

Keano did that too.

Is that the same as detention at school?

Gosh, Scouse Git, you're a hard man!

Out of order.
Slate someone for tackling when all the rest don't. What does he want? Martin to do a Leadbitter n back off constantly letting their players through on goal? Maybe if the rest would tackle Martin wouldnt be having to try and clear up for other peoples lack of effort.

Here's an idea, how about fining Martin two weeks' wages and dishing that money out to all the fans who made the trip to Peterborough?

Personally i think Jewell will do the business and although there is a lot of truth in what he has said, this wont do anything for LM confidence going forward. Tad harsh to come out and criticise like that

Well Lee I have to say I can see where big Paul is coming from, even know your one of my favourite players in our sqaud but your prefessional and you need to start acting like it. I myself last year played for Harwich and Parkstone and I had the youth coming up to me saying about my dirty challages and that impressed them and they tryed to copy me and thats not the way to play football. Point being is so many people and younger kinds saw that game and look up to you and there for try copy your actions so think about what your teaching them little kids etc. All the best mate

Not to sure I agree with PJ's decision on this one, The players rightly need to know where the line is and not to cross it but to say it was a debatable decision then make him train with the reserves doesn't send out the right message in my opinion.

This is very harsh,LM has been growing in confidence since PJ took over & has looked like one of the better of our players.
I would much rather have read the headline PJ appealing LM red card.

Well done Paul Jewell you've just tipped my opinion of you over the edge to the extent I now have no respect for you! That's right keep on publicly blaming the most fragile players in the squad, like a school bully!

Typical now they are being punished for "not being nice".

Given the number of underperforming journeymen that PJ could have had a go at, this is totally unreasonable. I've looked at this on the video that you can watch on the BBC website, among others, and I cannot see how this was judged a foul, let alone a cardable offence. Martin went in squarely at the ball, which he hit full on; any follow through to the opponent was from the ball first, not from Martin. This was nothing more than a firm, fair, tackle - which is what PJ has been asking his players to do. This is starting to smack of losing the plot.

This is not good man management by Jewell and should not have been aired in public. I am not and have never been a fan of Lee Martin but this can hardly help the lad after all he was one of the few who was actually trying. As mentioned this is Roy Keane all over again making players train with the reserves and the youths. Getting very worried about this Manager as well now.

this should be said behind closed doors, not broadcast to the world. I wholeheartedly back jewell and believe he is the man to eventually get us to the prem, but he's starting to show his frustration now in the wrong way, think this rant is a little unprofessional in all honesty. Get the players together PJ, calm everything down, get back to basics and above all install some confidence in a squad seriously lacking in it.... once you do that, we might stand a chance of climbing up the league.

jas1972, totally agree with you 100%

and the dig at the fans for clapping off a player for being in the minority of our players to show passion for the cause is really out of order.

and further to Jaz1972's comment, the ball was also out of play too when Martin made the tackle.

Oh well, we'd better get used to the ref spoiling games.. we got D'Urso on Saturday!

Can understand PJ's frustration. Lee Martin has improved no end since the dark days of RK but he seems to have a habit of earning his place in the side (not a difficult task, I know) and then getting sent off for a stupid challenge. Personally I can name several players far more deserving of 'reserve team training' based on their performances over the last week but maybe polluting the reserves with the gutless wonders in our first team is not fair.

The laws of the game changed a long time ago - it's not about whether you get the ball or not, it's about whether the challenge is careless (yellow card) or reckless (red card). When you slide in at that speed, you cannot change or stop your momentum if the other player reacts to the incoming challenge. If the Boro player had knocked the ball away, Martin wouldn't have been able to do anything put carry on following through, and we'd be looking at a potentially leg-breaking challenge instead. That's why it was reckless, and that's why Martin had to go.

Not sure this should have been done so publicly even if PJ was trying to get a positive reaction, as following the 7-1 farce he should continue to shoulder the blame. LM doesn't protect the LB very well and we were are often 2 on 1 when the a FB overlaps, alhough hes not alone in the hands on hips department. Previous poor record may have made the ref look for something that wasn't there, so kinda of get it but shouldn't be done this way given whats happened in the last two games.

He has got to be joking? It was not a red card, a yellow at worst. I hope we are going to appeal it?

Looks like PJ's really feeling the pressure, by all means have a go at LM or any player, but why are you putting this in the public arena. If you treat people like naughty children they act like naughty children, simple psychology. This public dressing down will do absolutely nothing for LM or squad morale, it's not like it needs denting any further. His public pronouncement on Carson's fitness levels were equally out of order, stop berating your staff in public, it's self defeating.

Campag, the rules on what is regarded as reckless involves both feet being off the ground and position of studs and position of the players in relation to each other...if it didn't every challenge on a wet pitch would be a sending off for a start.
Was a yellow at most.
