Scowy and Foley to Join Academy
Monday, 16th Jul 2012 22:58

TWTD understands that former striker James Scowcroft and ex-coach Steve Foley are to join Bryan Klug’s academy coaching staff. The EPPP shake-up of the academy system means clubs like Town who are opting for Category Two need to appoint additional staff this summer.

Scowcroft, who until last season was still playing for Bury Town, came through the Blues’ youth system under Klug in the mid-nineties and made his first team debut in the 1996/97 season.

The 36-year-old went on to make 204 starts and 50 sub appearances for Town, scoring 55 goals, before moving to Leicester in the summer of 2001. A loan spell in 2005 saw three more Town starts and six sub appearances without scoring.

Scowcroft subsequently spent time with Crystal Palace, Coventry and Leyton Orient before moving to Bury Town, where he has been coaching since he hung up his boots midway through last season, while also working in the media.

Foley joined the Blues coaching staff after leaving Norwich City in 2006 during Jim Magilton’s time as manager. He was jettisoned in the summer of 2010 when Roy Keane was in charge.

Foley

The 59-year-old played for Colchester for 10 years and was also a coach and caretaker-manager at Layer Road. Born in Clacton, Foley has also coached at Watford and has recently been working with non-league Leiston and appearing as a pundit on Radio Suffolk.

Elsewhere, Brad Guzan, who was linked with the Blues in March, has signed a new three-year deal with Aston Villa, having previously decided to leave the Premier League side at the end of last season.

Great news James Scowcroft is one of the best former Ipswich Town players which came through our ranks.

Sounds good. Anything to get Foley to stop praising Darren Huckerby on the radio will do me!

Great news, it's starting to feel like the 'real' Ipswich Town again.

Anyone else heard that we have had a 500K-600K bid rejected by Derby for Davies? It was on a facebook page and Jewell is refusing to bid any higher (which i think is understandable). As for this news, just like ray man 10 said, our academy is coming together very nicely!

James Scowcoft played first team football in 1995/96! Made his debut in the League Cup in 1995 and played about 20 odd games after if I remember correctly!

Essex, you're right, he missed a sitter at home to milwall in last game of season which would have put us in the playoffs, instead we drew 0-0 and finished 7th!

Tim70, I have no idea, unless I'm about to be whooshed, how scowie is one of our best products, I doubt I'd have him in the top 20 in the last 20 years!

Steve Foley is a quality coach and in just an hour session I learnt a lot from him teaches kids well and explains well.

Scowie is extremely knowledgeable about football, he will work wonders in the Academy. If we bring through quality youth players, they will surely be taken by those clubs with Cat. 1? - are we not now just operating a centre of excellence for other bigger clubs to rape?

Welcome back to both of you.

Scowie's header against Milwall was going in until it hit a massive bump in the pitch. Worst pitch I can remember at Portman Road that season. we got in Fergie the next season.

Excellent news! Scowie talked a lot of sense when he was on Radio Suffolk and he is one of us. By the way, it's p*** down with rain in Helmond this morning, so the boys should feel at home. COYB!

Get Kiwomya back as well and Jason Dozzell - another local boy who would be a great role model for the current kids !

More proof if it was needed that we are doing things on the cheap. Foley has had no impact on us previously and Scowie, good old boy yes, has no coaching history at this level. Much as hope it all works out well I feel the failure to really support the Academy at the appropriate level will come back to haunt us.

This is great news, Steve Foley is a top coach and James will learn a lot from him. Hate to say this again but that Plank Keane set this club back years, not only selling our young players for peanuts, but sacking good loyal coaches.

Yep! Good news all round.
I tend to forget from time to time how inexplicably bad keane was/is!!

Scowie was never the best technical player but did very well for us at Championship level and has always been vocal about his support for ITFC so hopefully he can do well as a coach

Both are local men with good footballing experience and knowledge.
I know for Scowie that working for ITFC will be a massive motivation for him.

@ Fatcatevans:
It can be difficult to determine the impact one coach has within the coaching team. The fact that Klugg wants him back within his team is good enough recommendation for me!

These guys know the club (values/history) very well and know the importance of developing youth players as does Klugg. I dont see any negatives with these signings at all.
