Going to be in York tomorrow afternoon and evening - any tips? 19:01 - Jul 14 with 5220 viewssoupytwist

Family of four including a 15 and 11 year old and will probably meet up with my parents for something to eat in the evening.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Thanks

I went to a great restaurant in York called Melton's. Bit pricey, but the food was really impressive. Lots to choose from for every kind of palate.

Just west of the Ouse!

There's the train museum if you all like trains

There's the Viking museum if you all like Vikings

And the Castle museum if you like old recreations of street scenes. Or just a walk around the walls.

the train museum is free, the viking museum is a lot more expensive than it used to be. you can still walk around the roman wall but I think you pay to go in the minster these days.

York Minster is excellent.

Possibly not for kids of that age though. Yorvik centre might be a better bet.

Just got back from taking 41 teenagers to York on a school trip. I'd take them to the York Dungeon and then a walk through the Shambles (inspiration for Diagon alley in Harry Potter) to the Chocolate museum. Our kids loved it

Jorvik is a bit underwhelming for all the hype. Go to the railway museum in the day and walk around the city walls with some chips in the evening.

As Stokie advised, give the Minster a look and as others have said the Railway Museum is very good. Not quite the little known curiosity it once was and probably filthy with tourists but quite child tolerant:

Pay a visit to the House of Trembling Madness. Great pub, and kids love pubs.

Spent a day in York about four years ago, had a really good lunch in Kapadokya Turkish restaurant, George Hudson Street, on the same side of the river as the railway museum. Should think it would suit an evening with the family as well, Tripadvisor suggests the standard is still good.
