Phil - cheeky, but can you pin?? I know a fair few of us are interested in chatting about this as well as ITFC.

To kick start - series predictions?

I am going Australia 2-3 England.

🚨WICKET! AUSTRALIA ARE ALL OUT!🚨

That's it. Australia are all out as Lyon tickles one off Root to the leg slip. Smith ends not out and will grab the headlines - deservedly so.

Australia lead by 26. Back in 10 minutes for the England innings folks. Strap in. This will be a big hour of cricket in this test match.

328 all out (lead by 26)

Their lead of 26 makes this even with them batting last, although their lead could well equate to the winning margin if we struggle in this session.

It's rare for most teams not to lose an early wicket in test cricket - if we're more than one down tonight, we're in trouble as the scoring rate won't be high.

I think Cook is really important here. Even if he just gets to his average in this innings, we'll have a platform. If he's out early, the pressure is on the inexperienced guys who did well in the first innings.

Loss of wickets is absolutely crucial going into tomorrow.

We need to hold out here

Cook gone - that's a great catch and a critical moment.

Loads of pressure on us now and the next hour could decide the outcome.

🚨WICKET!🚨

Huge moment in the test match as Cook is out. He's tried to pull the short ball from hazlewood but has been caught out towards the boundary. A really good catch. A really good bouncer. A really big moment.

I think we're done now!

We could be 4 down tonight and it could finish tomorrow.

Root needs to do what Smith did but it doesn't feel likely.

🚨WICKET!🚨

It's all going to pot. Hazlewood has Vince caught behind. Just a ball after he edges one that doesn't carry to slips, he edges one straight into the hands of the 1st slip.

England 2 down. I'm big trouble now. Vital that captain Root steadies the ship here whilst the Aussies have their tails up and the quicks steam in.

Just shows what one bad session can do for momentum.

We were flying this morning with the wickets and had them 200-7. They managed to put on another 100, for in the lead, momentum swung their way and suddenly our batsman are put under pressure to end the day.

Christ!

Root takes a short one in the grill. Starc and the other quicks immediately run in to make sure he is ok.

He's a bit shaken up (as you would be getting a 90mph in the grill) and the doctor is on the pitch checking for concussion as is the protocol.

He looks like he will be ok. New helmet required of course. That coulda been nasty

We're effectively 3-2 now - we need our best batsmen to be batting after lunch tomorrow to have a chance of putting pressure back on them.

Lyon looks so much more dangerous than Moeen - that and Smith vs Root could be key to the series.

Stoneman is taking all sorts of short stuff here

His temperament has been absolutely superb under this kind of pressure

Stoneman is looking impressive - their bowlers know they could win it here.

However, 10 overs into tomorrow the ball gets softer and the best bowlers tire so that's our chance…if we get there with wickets to spare!

Stumps!

Day 3 ends and England have made it to the close of play without losing that dreaded third wicket. Stoneman and Root survive the short balls from the quicks and the spin of Lyon. Perhaps a strange decision to allow the spinner on the last over when the threat was bigger from the speedsters.

A cracking night of cricket and I shall see you all tonight for day 4. Though I may have to sleep for a few hours after the footy and not make the morning session.

I better jump in the shower and get ready for Villa. Come on town!

33-2

Advantage definitely with Australia at the moment, but not irredeemably so. Need Root to do what Smith did and Stoneman to stay around for a bit too.

Good Test match so far though.

Lyon's control is so much better. Moeen always sends down a few pies so he doesn't really build pressure. but that's the difference between a regular & a part time spinner.

Still don’t understand how Moeen is called a part-time spinner when he does it all the he time and takes his share of wickets.

Bit like calling Chambers a part-time RB when he played there all the time for several seasons.

I think we're well in this if we bat well first session tomorrow.

EDIT: I'd fancy us with at 250 lead.

I guess it's more that he has a shared role than a part-time one. Lyon bats at 11 and is in the team for his bowling alone (although he bats well for an 11).

Moeen might not get in as a spinner if he averaged 11 with the bat like Lyon: his batting is a big part of his selection. It's probably like Stokes, who would only be on the fringes of the team as a bowler if he were a number 10 batsman who averaged 15.

In the context of the match, and with us under pressure early tomorrow, we'll need to bat most of the day for a 250 lead. That would still be an achievable target as a chase on the last day. This is where we need the likes of Stokes, who could score very quickly.

Moeen would never have got close to the team if he couldn't bat. His first class bowling average is around 40. He deserves his place as a more than capable attacking batsman & reasonably effective part time spinner, but if England did have a Test class spinner, of which we've only had Swann in the last 20 years, his place might be called into question.

Can the see the Aussies blowing us away tomorrow. Seem to have that hostility back in their bowling and we are struggling with the short pitched stuff. Unfortunately, they seem to have their hands around our throat and are beginning to squeeze!

Nor do I - that's why I think we'd miss Stokes because if we got 200 in front he could take it away from them after tea tomorrow.

I think we'll probably end with a lead of around 200, get them a couple of wickets down early, before they settle and win by about 5 wickets late in the afternoon session on day 5.

It's great match with lots of possibilities still though.
