The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread 16:47 - Nov 22 with 310890 views | MaySixth | Phil - cheeky, but can you pin?? I know a fair few of us are interested in chatting about this as well as ITFC. To kick start - series predictions? I am going Australia 2-3 England.

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 12:14 - Nov 27 by Ryorry | That succession of bouncers was scandalous - do they have an umpire assessor present at the matches? If so, those two should be given a serious talking to, and/or a different pair of umps allocated to the next test (if they aren't automatically? not sure how umps are appointed). |
Exactly. If the umpires fail to enforce the laws properly, they should be questioned, as was Mr Stroud after his performance at PR last week. Important a message isn't sent to the Aussie quicks that they can bowl unlimited bouncers.

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 08:16 - Nov 26 by gainsboroughblue | Frankly, we've squandered this. At 209-7, we had the Aussies in the palm of our hands but in a true England manner, we took the foot of the gas and allowed them back in, and then the momentum swung with that short burst their quicks had at the end of day 3. The taking off of Anderson three overs into the new ball at that critical point may well be because he had a slight injury, but the noises coming out of the dressing room contradict that and I'm not buying the comment Broad came out with (or more likely was told to say) about bowlers needing to be rotated and not overworked. You do not take out your best bowler of an attack when the new ball is 6 overs old and you have your foot close to the throat of the opposition. Especially when you had the end of one session and the start of the next in sight. That post lunch session was painfully poor from Root and it is alarmingly clear to see, that once Broad and Anderson are seen off, there really is nothing for the Aussies to worry about. We've heard how Adelaide is our test to win. Well, it needs to be now. |
When interviewed at the end of the match, Root said his decision to take Anderson off 3 overs into the new ball was based on a hunch he (Root) had, and that Jimmy had already bowled a fair bit.. No injury mentioned. The commentators (Aggers + 1 who I can't recall) did wonder if there was a bit more to it that's being kept under wraps. I'm starting to get a bit worried about Root's decision making in his role as captain tho. [Post edited 27 Nov 2017 12:30]

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 07:46 - Nov 27 by TLA | That's the spirit catch - there was definitely enough in this performance to justify a prediction change! Looking forward to Saturday - if we bat first we're going to be 200 without loss at tea and kick on from there. If they bat first, they'll be lucky to make 100... |
Exactly my hoping! Good to meet you, shame about the equaliser, I’d left for my train by then though so it didn’t count.

Restickied due to Ben Stokes travelling to antipodes (although apparently New Zealand and not Australia).

There's going to be ongoing chat between Tests tho, isn't there - Bairstow & Stokes already, within 24 hours of the Brisbane finish!

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 04:34 - Nov 26 by TLA | Morning bournemouth. I reckon Lyon probably is in Swann's class - his figures over the last few years are very impressive. He's certainly a class above Moeen. It'll be interesting to see if Crane develops. It was so disappointing to see Root fail to convert another 50 into a ton. Since being captain, Smith has converted 13 out of 23 50s into centuries - Root is so often out for between 50 - 90. We look so much weaker with Broad coming in when we're 7 down. |
He's had a very good year and his control is decent. He's turned it more than I expected him to. I do agree with Swann though, the easiest players to bowl to as a spinner are the one's who just prod at it. If you get sweeping and use your feet, it certainly unsettles the line and length. Aussies are generally pretty aggressive with spinners, they go after them on their harder pitches. Moeen Ali certainly showed how to do it and the Aussies did start to panic a bit before the stumping. Crane looks to have great potential, he looked promising in the warm up but still only got something like 2 - 78 against weakish opposition. The square boundaries are fairly short at Adelaide so the control of length needs to be higher.

Yeah, I think so. Will become unusable pretty quickly - especially on a mobile - if it gets too much longer. Maybe have a fresh one for each Test and then leave it until the next starts?

If we win in Adelaide then have Stokes return in Perth would be a massive momentum shift in our favour.

Love to see Overton play ahead of Ball. I don't even know how Ball is in the 12 man squad. I'd much prefer to see Curran as he's had a fairly decent season with Surrey.

Not a morning for 'Rommentary' so far! This break might be good for us to be honest. Starting again under the lights with cloud, moisture etc. and we could take a few quick wickets. Are you heading up for the game today?
