The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 09:51 - Jan 8 with 5850 views | Steve_M | The less said about England the better, a few good spells, even sessions, but consistently failed to build on them and then wilted against set batsmen. That England managed some big partnerships too implies that it wasn't easy to get set batsmen out, England didn't get set well enough often enough. Meanwhile in Cape Town, SA are 95/7. 172 ahead but Steyn is injured and out for the series. http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/18065/scorecard/1122276/south-africa-vs-india This one is going to be interesting.

He's spot on re Sky in particular, but I think he could/should? also have mentioned the global issue of 'homer' pitches being produced by host countries.

Likewise, + TLA & others. The convos on here in the middle of the night have been just about the only thing that made the series bearable! [Post edited 8 Jan 2018 11:58]

So much better having a wicket with a bit of life in it for the bowlers. Yes this TM may be over in what is effectively 3 days, but its been intriguing. With so much short form cricket played on flat belters its a real test of technique, which the modern day batsman is sadly lacking. 77-6 now...game over, great to see this Indian team brought down a peg or two. The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 10:26 - Jan 9 with 5654 views | TLA | I just saw that Trevor Bayliss will leave his post as England coach in 2019. I wonder if that means the focus will be on so many games, in different formats, in home conditions over the next 2 years. I imagine he'd like to leave with series wins at home this year, and in the next Ashes, as well as the World Cup. Any success in those would be great but would it be at the expense of focussing on how to win in India/Australia etc. in the future?

he was brought in from day 1 to sort out the white ball cricket side of things, the test side was never a priority, so his target was always to win either the T20wc, ICC champions trophy or the ODI world cup 2019 thats being held in England...again...the Ashes series then follows on. if he doesnt win it he'll of course have failed and be likely to have got shown the exit door anyway, but you dont change your head coach before the Ashes, so he gets that reprieve till all that concludes.

Morning TLA. I watched the whole of the Australian innings and Wood bowled with pace and aggression, something we sorely missed in the Ashes. Woakes was terrible. He looked slow and continuously bowled short of a length. Why they persevere with him beats me. [Post edited 14 Jan 2018 7:48]

Hi Thai - I think Woakes is a decent bowler but gets selected because he can also bat a bit, like Moeen. We seem afraid of selecting specialists, especially with no Stokes. Great innings from Roy here and we're in a good position.

Morning TLA! Believe the one day side are more aware of their roles and expectations. They look a more collective unit compared to our Test side atm. Terrific ton by Roy, but he is certainly not a test batsman for those wondering why he is not in the test side. Wood looked good, we missed him in the Ashes series, could do with one other bowler that is a little quicker than him in Root's test side.

Morning christiand! Having a specialist 1 day team has worked wonders - it looks like we could chase down 400 right now! I really like Wood - it's incredible how much pace he generates off such a short run. I agree about Roy - a few similar players (like Warner) have adapted to test cricket and I'd love it if Roy did but I can't see it happening. Having Wood and Stokes fit for the Ashes would have made a difference - maybe 3-1, rather than 4-0!

I was looking at the two squads and thinking we have a better side than them We'll see how we get on in the five match series but we might actually get a contest in this one

It doesn't even feel worrying if one of these get out, with who we have to come in. I'm always disappointed not to see Jos bat! I think this series could go to a decider.

Different over five days instead of ten overs though. I've always thought Plunkett could come back into the Test side but he hardly plays any four day cricket. Come on England, making slightly hard work of finishing this one off.

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 09:33 - Jan 16 with 5154 views | SaleAway | A lady walked into a Police Station and the desk Sergeant said, "Can I help you ?” "Yes," she said, "I'd like to report a case of sexual assault." "Where did it happen?” the Sergeant asked. "In the park just down the road," she replied. "Can you describe what happened ?" "Yes, I was walking along the footpath in the park near the trees when a man jumped out of the bushes and dragged me in there, removed my knickers, then he dropped his pants and had his way with me." "Could you give me a description of him ?" "Yes, he was wearing white shoes, long white trousers, a white shirt and he had these two big long pads from his feet up to and over his knees, one on each leg." "Sounds to me like he was a cricketer, most probably a batsman," said the Sergeant. "Yes," said the lady, "He was an English cricketer." "That's very observant" said the Sergeant. "You worked that out from his accent ?" "No," she replied. "I worked it out because he wasn't in for very long."
