Interesting that Town refused to let England U19s take Downes away as they wanted him to be part of their own pre-season preparations (Star).

Perhaps suggests that Hurst likes his energy and thinks it might be his time.
Additionally, maybe he felt that Downes might not be over-used with England.

Downes looked VERY promising last season, and ready to compete for the first team.

His loan will have done him good and I expect him to play a part this season.

When on loan it did sound like he mayve struggled stamina wise, so hopefully the fitness guys can help him with that.

I'd have said it was a fairly obvious decision - he and Nydam are seen as 1st teamers and we only have about 18 fit first teamers currently

More likely that Hurst is using pre-season as part of his own assessment of the squad, so most likely wanted him to be around so he could get a proper look at him

Suspect he will end up in and around the side though

Wouldn't allow either him or Nydam to go. Don't think anything more can be read into it other than wanting them here during pre-season. A lot of clubs have done the same.

Morris being allowed to go is more understandable as he's less near the first team and it was Chelsea's decision to allow Chalobah to go.
