Yeah, completely different from how we invaded Russia the other month over that poisoning malarkey.

I think you are looking for reasons to have a pop to be honest. It’s totally different to the Russian situation.

With regards to nothing happening, things have already happened, a number of companies and organisations are boycotting the flagship Saudi conference coming up. More should happen but to say nothing is happening is harsh. Governments do need to take a sterner line I agree.

Trump is being an idiot again but then he has warned against a rush to judgement, something which was certainly echoed on hear when the Russian stuff happened. How come it’s not the same for both situations?

Does anybody even think he wasn't killed in there. In this instance not rushing to judgement will be like calling for a 'royal commission enquiry' ie buy some time to kick it into the long grass.

Quite rightly a number of companies and organisations are boycotting the summit, unfortunately our trade secretary Liam Fox is attending.

There's very little real doubt about that. The question seems to have become: "Did Khashoggi die in the course of a botched attempt at rendition to Saudi Arabia?"

Still very bad and deserving of censure, but not quite at the level of deliberate assassination.

Or that might just be the face-saving gloss to avoid the risk of oil prices increasing fourfold and the world economy grinding to a halt (c.f. 1973-4).

To be honest, oil prices increasing 4 fold would be awful in the short term for the global economy but might expedite the move away from reliance on oil. Longer term it might actually be a benefit.

It would also bankrupt the Saudi's, they have little else to provide income except oil given they haven't got very far with transitioning their economy away from oil exporting.

I'm not sure the two decades of recession while we wean ourselves off oil would be much fun for anyone.

The Saudis have the option of turning the taps back on to save themselves. But the shock to the world economy will have much wider repercussions.

Isn't it atrange that, in the 70's Sheik Yemani made the world realise the need to find lternatives to M.E. oil
the UK had forgotten that before the end of the 80's.

Russia make quite a few of their own journos/dissidents disappear. This rarely raises an eyebrow in the West.

A completely different matter when it comes to launching a chemical attack on British soil.

So I’ve imagined what our response would be if it woz da Russians wot dun it and have concluded that our response would have been complete indifference.

Whilst our politics are not close, I agree with you.

Russia has had pretty harsh sanctions though.
One of the problems is that most countries can brush off indirect action as they only affect the lower classes.

I had was told that sometimes you have to sit next to the scumbags (on occasion) to help them. If you go toe-to-toe they bristle and won't listen.

Diplomacy is one of the toughest jobs out there. No easy way.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Thanks for your carefully considered thoughts. How do you feel about this inaction and do you imagine in the Russian scenario that our government would be sending representatives to their equivalent of Davos in the Desert?

I'd rather we cut all ties with Saudi Arabia and pay more for our fuel. A disgusting regime.

That said I know many Saudi people and they are fine folk. Like many countries in the world you'll find the people from there are from a far higher plateau than the scum who rule them, UK included.

Glassers is right with his comments above. There are so many journalists killed in Russia that they have a day set aside each year to commemorate them. In Russia, December 15th each year is "Remembrance Day of Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty". You would need to be extremely naïve to think that the hand of the state is not behind the vast majority of the deaths.

Very few of these killing are reported upon in UK, one high profile exception being the murder of Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.

I agree but that does not excuse inaction over Saudi Arabia. The difference is that if this had happened in a Russian embassy we would be hearing a lot more about if and there would be stronger calls for action so he is not comparing the same things.
The poisoning parallel is more accurate as that did occur outside of Russia.
