Same old story.

2 down within 3 overs.

Morning TRB. I don't know whether you'd agree but it seems a strange team selection. No room for Broad and play 3 spinners. Foakes in as wicketkeeper when Butler could have done the job.
I know Sri Lanka have not had great results of late but I think we've hugely underestimated them.

Sadly predictable I am afraid

I'm not surprised Cookie called it a day before this series. Our batting line up looks pretty light any way, let alone in Sub-Continental conditions.

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Morning all. Same 'gung-ho' approach for all conditions. Our batters don't seem to have the nous to adapt their style of play.

Hit it and hit it harder again!!!

Whereas in English conditions we're brilliant......

It's an ongoing issue that won't have been helped by losing one of the two players who could properly bat out a Test innings.

I was more surprised to see any cricket being played, weather forecast was dreadful yesterday.

I despaired when I saw yesterday that Root had come out and said they need to be ‘bolder’. Basically took that to mean that grafting was boring and they couldn’t be bothered. The whole team behaves like they are a number 7 or 8.

I haven’t even looked at the score yet. England are fulfilling fixture obligations. Nothing more.

Some dreadful shots in this lot, outfield looks dreadful but clearly runs in this game for anyone with any patience:

I'm not sure it's that much of a coincidence that our test team are at a low point when our one day side are doing so well.
That said, totally agree we need a grafter in the top four, a second in the top six probably wouldn't do any harm either.

Steady progress after a bad start. I suppose 350 is still a decent score here, 260 less so.

With the pitch expected to deteriorate fast, some commentators were saying anything over 250 could be competitive.

Doesn't look like the minefield that greeted South Africa here last year, it will turn however so anything over 350 should be a good score. Annoying if we had batted sensibly in the first session we could be looking at a huge score and batting only once.

321/8 at stumps. Foakes unbeaten on 87. 91 overs bowled too.

Over all that's a good day for England but the same top order failings continue.

Up there with the best days of test match cricket I've ever seen. Foakes and Curren superb. God knows how we got a game in today. It smashed it down for 24 hours beforehand. Putting the arrack down to hopefully see BF get a ton tomorrow.

Yep, Root & Stokes (& to some extent Jennings) should hang their heads in shame at the shots they played to get themselves out.
Terrific effort from Foakes on his debut. He's allegedly a better keeper than Buttler or Bairstow so maybe the latter could return to the side as an opener when he's fit?

I have seen Foakes keep once for Surrey when he was extremely slick & tidy. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he is a much better keeper than Bairstow, especially to spin. This will be an interesting Test for him, although on today's form he could easily be a Test class batsman (career first class average of 40) & aged only 25.

The match position looking very different this morning, Sri Lanka 40-4 just shy of lunch.
This could see a very healthy lead, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them get within 20 or 30 of us.
