This is what breakthroughs look like - a successful test flight of the first ever plane to have no moving parts. Or it could end up going nowhere I suppose, but pretty incredible stuff all the same.

Very cool, there have been smaller ionic wind demonstrators for years but they all had to be plugged into a power source to work. It's going to be hard to scale up the design but hopefully it will be possible.

There are certainly a lot of "rumours" that the US military already has this stuff working and has done for quite a time. The science itself is not new so it's possible they have. In the end breakthroughs tend to be determined by how much funding you are willing to chuck at them (not in all cases of course).

It's great news though, hopefully the researchers will get a nice big grant or a private company on-board to continue the development.

Interesting that the project lead said that it was inspired by Star Trek. Terry Pratchett remarked in his Science of Discworld books that ideas from science fiction can often be a driver in people developing the things in real life.

Presumably that would make it ironic wind propulsion.
