An interesting read on the demise of the Tory Party 11:55 - Jun 14 with 1739 viewsSteve_M

The intellectual shallowness of the party for the last two decades is even more stark when set out like this.

https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2019/06/closing-conservative-mind

" As John Stuart Mill well knew, the Conservative Party was never truly “the stupid party”. Yet what was once an insult has become an aspiration. It may yet prove the party’s epitaph."

Other essential reading today is this piece. It touches on some of the same issues, but via the TWTD favourite tactic of Corbyn whataboutery.

Good articles. And agree that ideology (stuck in a Thatcherism/Reaganomics past) seems to be leading them blindly.

Essentially, they just seem very out of step with the modern world and that includes modern business and increasingly the young generation of entrepreneurs. Businesses have generally moved on from the "greed is good" style and see that their growth has to be more sustainable and socially responsible or they'll be marginalised by their customers.

In most industries, they don't want a deregulated, free marketplace where the sheer volatility means there's quick money to be made yet little security. But increasingly this type of chaos is seen as good by many Tories and their speculative backers. This is where ideology and pure self-interest meet.

And, of course, they're blind to their underlying responsibility. They're there to help people's lives become better not just create economic opportunities that will inevitably be hoovered up by the people who already have the necessary muscle. But they still can't see beyond their blind trickle-down belief mainly because, again, it's just not in their own personal interests.

It's because their core vote is now 65+ and that drives their policies.

They don't have the balls / ability to change. They have no future.

Seems all a bit clumsy. The poster boy for what he's saying is Galloway who isn't even in the Labour Party. And I disagree with Corbyn's Bennite view on the EU but that's still not translated into a hard Leave position.

Corbyn is certainly to the left of the Labour centre but I don't see that Labour's policies and positions are far-left. And they certainly wouldn't be termed populist elsewhere in Europe - it's all pretty standard social democrat fare.

I hope so. But it's undeniable that too many of them are still in thrall to free-market thinking that isn't that applicable or desirable 40 years on.

Ironically enough, the Tory party of today is exactly the sort of party that he's been pining for.

He spends most of the time whining that the party is too nice to pooftas, foreigners and non-white people, supportive of more modern, relevant education methods that don't rely on rote learning on regurgitated dates and facts rather than actually doing anything with your knowledge and pro-Europe. He's got what he wanted in 2019's iteration.

And they're a sh1tshower.

Christ, no. the only difference between the ones Hitchens is whining about and the ones now is that tey're no longer pretending to be 'nice'. The Tory part he bemoans is what emerged after two crashing failures by hard-right leaders Howard and Hague.

And instead we could go back to the world of unions and 1960s/70s which is based on greed, greed, greed and feck the customer

And when you talk about younger companies I suppose you mean Facebook, Google etc who are happy to pay tax and be
socially responsible.

I'm not even going to ask you to rationalise that.

The 60s and 70s were of course renowned for the fat cat miners, shipbuilders and print workers driving around flash new motors and smoking their cigars.

They were renowned for companies like British Leyland and British Rail they delivered nothing. BL who's quality of cars built was so bad the public stopped buying them, the tax payer was then forced to pay BL workers to do nothing. Two of my wider family were employed at BL the unions had them doing nothing and most of the time was spent at home - easiest working time in their life as they always said

Thankfully the public got fed up of the BL workers building death traps and moved onto Japanese cars, cheaper and better built, finally the unions killed BL.

BR was as bad the unions wouldn't allowed customer service people it was almost impossible to complain they only allowed them when it was clear BR was going to be privatized

The Tories capitalism maybe be out of touch today but so is Labours union based socialism

And dont even start me on the wonderful 'closed shops' unions forced on us.
