That doesn't mean he didn't reach his potential.
World Class isn't restricted to those few players.
I would say Owen was world class at his peak. |
Potential isn't necessarily comparable in the way you demonstrate. If he had the potential to win the ballon d'or five times, then winning it once isn't fulfilling his potential.
Also winning it once isn't comparable to winning it multiple times, like Messi and Ronaldo. I tend to agree with those that put him alongside the likes of Rooney and Totti, which is still praise.
He was World Class for a time. But certainly not the top echelon. Not given his honours list. He won one league title, at Man Utd, where he score 5 in 30+ games. No Champions League. The upper Echelon make this happen.
Then scoring stats you gave are from when he was younger. He was hampered by injury and he could have had an even more successful career, had he been less injury prone.
