Agreed that a lot of this is down to the laws being complex, but this is something government should address. As a simple numbers game, it makes financial sense to sort out the small business tax gap, rather than going after legal tax avoidance. The "shifting money offshore" line that gets banded about is total nonsense. If you are based in the UK, it's legally impossible to shift money offshore without incurring tax liabilities, other than through legal tax structures (which would be caught by the 'tax avoidance' point in the report). I'm not arguing the morals of whether these people should pay more tax (I think they should), but if there is a gap, it's for the government to fix it. I don't pay more tax than i am legally required to. I'm sure you don't either. Why do think someone else should just because they earn a lot more than we do? |
Other factors to consider here though, many big businesses are getting a custom deal from the Tories to pay less than others and create their own rules, how is that factored into the report? Tax bands are tax bands. Just because a loophole makes something legal doesn't mean it's moral.

You're confusing tax policy vs a tax gap. This report fosuses on the latter (whereas your point is the former). I don't have sufficient expertise to debate the pros/cons of tax benefits offered to bigger businesses; it will always be a balancing act. I agree on the moral point; that's the exact point i was making. But to demonise individuals for abiding by the law is laughable. Change the law, but don't attack the individual for doing what everyone else does. I recently had a very interesting chat recently with a leading tax QC who had consulted on a report which highlighted that a flat tax rate of 18% for everyone (irrespective of earnings) would increase the tax take in rhe UK. Obviously it's politically impossible as people are obsessed with everyone paying their 'fair share' (whatever that means - presumably I want to pay less ans I want those richer than me to pay more....)
