If I understand you, those who dodge should be shown the door. I agree with that. If we can tighten-up governance then a lot of problems could be avoided. That's both corporate and personal btw. Sorry for the misunderstanding. |
The problem is avoidance isn't illegal, only evasion.

I partly agree with callis in that there is a real move towards race to the bottom capitalism and it is only getting worse. Unfortunately I don't see an alternative to capitalism because of human nature, but the mixed mode Nordic system seems to fare pretty well. The Nordic system isn't far off what Corbyn is wanting to implement, is it really that radical? Of course people will say he's a communist though.

Capitalism truly has created an unstoppable monster on 13:27 - Nov 3 by tractordownsouth | Venezuela's problems were caused by a lack of export diversity and an over reliance on a commodity ( oil) with fluctuating prices. 80% of their exports were oil, and they made the mistake of not spending the profits they made on other industries, which would have left them less vulnerable to external shocks... Plus their corporate tax rate is 34%, which is much higher than Labour's proposal.... I can bet you none of that is going to be in Labour's manifesto... |
So many words for ‘corrupt socialist government’...why beat around the bush??

Capitalism truly has created an unstoppable monster on 07:49 - Nov 3 by Jon_456 | Isn’t that evidence that labour would be disastrous for the country? I understand Labours ideas are probably good in principle but they won’t work. As the article states businesses and millionaires/billionaires will simply leave the country, leaving the government with less money to tax and an increase in unemployment as businesses will look to make back their losses for those that stay. 40% of something is a lot better than 100% of nothing. |
If they were actually paying their 40% rather than using expensive accountants we'd probably be in a better place but here we are.

Er, "which results in taxes". Precisely what the point of the thread wa about. So you would agree with Corbyn that businesses and individuals should pay their fair share and not use various loopholes to deprive the public purse what it's owed. [Post edited 4 Nov 2019 9:24]

There's nothing wrong with capitalism. It just takes some regulation and commitment to reinvest in society to make it work as it should for people.

But people are paying, we wouldn't have a NHS if people weren't paying. All Labour is doing is attacking businesses, once they leave then you have nothing Labour is biting off the hand which feeds it. The vast majority of people in this country are on PAYE yes there with be some people at the top because of how they are paid with share options who dont pay paye on those, same as people who setup 2 person LTD companies to operate as a contractor. Labour is trying to paint all Companies as Amazon's but they aren't all Amazon's and as I've said before if people really wanted to change how companies like Amazon, Google, Netflix operate they should stop buying stuff from them. It politics of the jealous, what Labour and others should be looking at is why a Countty like the US can create entrepreneurs which build companies like Amazon and the UK is failing to do the same? Why is it in the UK as soon as someone achieves success with a company employing 100s, 1000s of people the UK public attack them rather than celebrate for creating jobs.

Yes, most people are. But there are also people who don't pay their way - those are the people being targeted, not all business.

What's easier, changing human nature or changing tax law so that it's up to date with modern business practices?

Capitalism truly has created an unstoppable monster on 10:35 - Nov 4 with 2756 views | WarkTheWarkITFC | The hypocrisy seems to be massively unreported. There are rich and famous people who repeatedly mouth off about Johnny Foreigner coming over here (I would hazard these people move for a better life rather than a worse one) whilst claiming that they will now leave the UK if Labour get in. Isn't it funny how these millionaires seem to think it's okay for them to move overseas just to protect their wealth, but heaven forbid someone from overseas wanting to move here to give their children an education, support their family or avoid war, poverty or famine. W*nkers. [Post edited 4 Nov 2019 10:39]

Exactly . Tax avoidance can be attacked by legislation, but this requires the cooperation of many countries. To say that taxes should be the same in every country sounds like the answer , but it isn't because different countries have many and varied needs for the income they receive from taxes. Economies are in different stages of development so that won't work. However the most blatant of assistance of tax avoidance ,for example the legislation in Luxembourg that is used by the likes of Starbucks can and should be curtailed.

It isn't illegal and, to be honest, isn't a game changing issue. The main problem is (and always has been) small businesses not paying tax. If anyone is interested in actually learning about this (rather than relying on disingenuous sound bites from politicians), I would recommend the HMRC report: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attac Obviously less convenient for Labour et al if they have to go after the 'people' rather than 'big bad business'

SMBs f*cking up their tax returns and large corporations avoiding corporation tax are quite different though. And that's before considering the individuals in these companies who are giving themselves large pay packets and shifting money off shore.

£14bn is a massive amount to simply dismiss. Agreed that a lot of this is down to the laws being complex, but this is something government should address. As a simple numbers game, it makes financial sense to sort out the small business tax gap, rather than going after legal tax avoidance. The "shifting money offshore" line that gets banded about is total nonsense. If you are based in the UK, it's legally impossible to shift money offshore without incurring tax liabilities, other than through legal tax structures (which would be caught by the 'tax avoidance' point in the report). I'm not arguing the morals of whether these people should pay more tax (I think they should), but if there is a gap, it's for the government to fix it. I don't pay more tax than i am legally required to. I'm sure you don't either. Why do think someone else should just because they earn a lot more than we do?
