The great team of 1981 12:31 - Jan 27 with 1341 viewsBrianTablet

From memory, the great team that we all know and love didn't actually play together that many times, did they?
I seem to remember McCall played quite a lot in 1981.

Cooper
Burley
Mills
Thijssen
Osman
Butcher
Wark
Muhren
Mariner
Brazil
Gates

Just checked here: http://www.prideofanglia.com/page.php?page=seasons&text=1980-81&level=1
McCall played 43 matches. Assume it was Burley that was injured and Mills switched to RB?

Anyone know the stats?

Cheers

Correct for the most part re McCall/Mills/Burley.

Cup attendances were higher on average than league....

Burley suffered an ACL injury at Shrewsbury in the Cup in late January which is why McCall played the second half of the season.

I believe George was the first player to recover from such an injury, although I felt he lost 10% of what he had had before the injury.

Poll: Would you support a permanent return to the old yellow Town badge?

Yep. I can remember being far more squashed in at the cup ties. Forest and Charlton especially.

Burley got injured at Shrewsbury in F.A. Cup 4th round on Jan 24th ending his season.

Burley had started 34 games in all competitions at that point.

Mick Mills missed all of December so McCall was deputising for him at LB then but also had a few games in MF when one of the main men out.

Of the 66 games we played Osman started all of them, Muhren 65, Butcher and Wark 64, Copper 61, Gates 60, Mariner and Brazil 58, Mills 54, Thijssen 52.

That iconic team actually only started something like 15 games by the looks of it.

Edit-just had a count up and it seems to me that THE team only started 14 games in all competitions in 1980/81.

Beattie played a few games that year too didn't he?

Obvious one being the cup semi.

The Beat started 11 and came on as sub in 6.

The semi final was of course his last ever game for us.

edit-due to injuries to The Beat and Big Al Osman and Butcher had established themselves as first choice central defenders since late 1978/79.

The effort Beattie put into that last game (well any game but particularly an FA cup match) might be an eye opener for Mr Klopp

And I think, unfortunately, that Thijssen missed most of his games during the run in? Gates was running on fumes from the cup semi’ onwards, and McCall was a fine utility player who I think gets a bit overlooked as he is compared to Burley who was pretty peerless at full back for a while. Didn’t know Muhren played 65! Butcher and Mariners’ efforts! Remember to include games/travel etc for the 82’ World Cup qualifiers.

Yes,Frans Thijssen only played one of the last seven league games(the win at Villa) but did play in and score in both legs of the UEFA Cup Final.

Paul Mariner only played three of the last seven league games and Gatesy missed two of them.

We lost six of our last eight league games having only lost three of the previous thirty four.
