Camper van suggestions please 13:32 - Feb 27 with 1506 views | gordon | I've been given the go-ahead (just about) to buy a camper-van type vehicle for a research project. Will involve driving a long way from the UK to a field sites in N Norway, needs to fit in some equipment and lots of food (but not loads) and be reasonably comfortable for 1 person for a few months. Needs to be fairly robust, with reliability absolutely critical. Budget probably £10-12k. Thinking that basically the converted people carrier type vehicle is the best bet? Any suggestions?

It was OK but you have to keep folding the bed away if cooking etc. Then we had a Toyota Hiace. Bit larger, but the same problem. These are probably OK for one person occupancy but the extended bed is always in the way during the day..... Some examples of both here: https://www.andysimports.co.uk/ All of these vehicles get pretty cold at night if you don't have any additional heating. N. Norway doesn't sound like it ever gets warm! Now we have a full-blown motor home with a fixed bed, but that's probably OTT for your purposes.

As the T4 was basically a plumbers van, parts are cheap and easy to get hold of. You'll be able to pick up a T5 for that price.

A mate has had a Bongo 10+ years. Van is approx 20 years old and never had any major issues with it. Way cheaper than a comparative VW T series. [Post edited 27 Feb 2020 16:12]

If I was buying a camper, I'd look at what the VW based offerings would provide and then spend about 75% of the cost on a Japanese van based one which did roughly the same thing. And get better reliability in all likelihood. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
