Ooh :( R.I.P.

Asterix books were a major resource for learning French while I was an au-pair in France back in the day -when I was 16 - used to borrow the books off the kids I was supposed to be looking after!

I loved Asterix books as a kid. I was only watching the latest animated Asterix movie on sunday. And I was thinking Asterix looks like Mick Mills and laughing to myself.

The character that used to make me cry with laughter was the little Egyptian guy who spoke in pictures not words. He was called Ptennisnet.

Tho some of that was the brilliance of Anthea Bell, who translated the spirit of Goscinny's jokes as much as the literal words.

When this Is all over may I recommend a visit to Parc Asterix, to the north of Paris. Took the kids there 25 + years ago.

Ah, thanks for that link. As a languages grad and occasional translator, I was always in awe of how well Asterix worked in English!
