I've read that and I don't see any sign of nationalism being the problem, it seems to be pure cock-up.

"The UK government has previously said it was unable to join the EU’s procurement schemes as it had not received an email of invitation."

"It is understood that officials in Whitehall only realised after those three rounds had been put out to tender that they had not received invitations to join the Joint Procurement Agreement steering committee where the orders are organised.

The UK only took part in its first meeting on joint procurement on 19 March after informing the commission that emails of invitation were being sent to an outdated address"

Unless I am missing something we aren't getting PPE from the joint purchasing agreement, not because of any nationalist tendencies, but because the invitiations were sent to the wrong place.

Correct me if I am wrong.

They’ve changed their story on why we’re not involved 3 times. The general public were made aware via the press of our lack of response whilst they “missed an email”, yet they’re also on record saying we didn’t as we’re not part of the EU, and not to mention for a load of people who missed an invite it’s odd that we had a presence in some of the earlier meetings.

As usual they are lying through their teeth, but this time it’s much harder to hide reality whilst all eyes are on them.

As someone who works in the web business and is yet to encounter a single Government website that is fit for purpose on a national and local level, this point resonates with me.

Although they seem to have no issue throwing a load of money at Google and Facebook willy nilly.

Ever tried the Passport renewal site? One of the best sites I’ve used. Straightforward and simple to use, allows you to provide your own picture from phone, with regular responses on progress at each stage by SMS or email and new passports received within 2 weeks.

Edit: Thinking about it can’t say I’ve ever had any issues with the self assessment tax site or the pension entitlement sites either.

Not for a few years.

I’ve been involved in a couple of government site projects though on a local level and honestly most are a fragmented mess and an excuse to p1ss some budget away.

I actually believe those in charge have little understanding of their own country and this is what happens when you have people in charge of departments with no personal experience.

If I said to one of them - a single person in government - the mini rant I just gave out a few minutes ago, I don't think they would be any the wiser.

There are thousands of skilled machinists who could make protective equipment for frontline staff. They are here and already kitted out, ready to go.

Give them a brief and let them get on with it.

I think you are essentially right. I doubt the government has made much use of those who make things here or even know they exist. I know that it took those working on Brexit 9 months to understand how the country actually worked. That was certainly true of May’s shower too. For example what was coming in, what was going out, how goods moved across countries, how items might move several times between countries before being finished and sold, where key stuff was made, the supply chain, national, EU, International regulations, import and export controls and how everything fitted together. Believe me, it’s complex beyond belief and nobody had a clue. They did by 2019 though, but not to the extent of who makes what and where, beyond the most basic of levels.

Successive governments seemed to have taken no interest in this country’s ability to make stuff or to protect businesses that do from asset strippers like Kraft. In WW2, armaments manufacturing at the beginning was half Germany’s. By the end it was more than double theirs. The ability is there, but the political will to invest in our own industries isn’t. When I see programmes like Inside the Factory the ingenuity staggers me - but it doesn’t happen without investment, encouraged by political will. The tories take the gold medal for having no idea, hotly pursued by previous labour governments.

In terms of experience, I agree. I don’t think anyone should be allowed into politics unless they’ve worked in the real world. I would also encourage much more swapping between the civil service and the private sector, especially for senior management. I know there is so much they can learn from each other. Rant over.

Once this is over those responsible will quietly retire on good pensions.

The biggest problems have arisen from those in authority not adapting quick enough to changed circumstances. PHE for example insisting they did all the testing.
