Edit: "The renowned French neurobiologist Jean-Pierre Changeux, who reviewed the study, suggested the nicotine might stop the virus from reaching cells in the body preventing its spread. Nicotine may also lessen the overreaction of the body’s immune system that has been found in the most severe cases of Covid-19 infection." [Post edited 23 Apr 2020 7:17]

wierd story: Nictoine may help prevent the virus on 07:25 - Apr 23 with 1552 views | WeWereZombies | I was once at a cafe in Luxor because the Lonely Planet had said that it was the best place to eat pigeon, Egypt's national dish. But the food was covered in flies, the table was covered in flies, we were covered in flies. Meanwhile at the only other outside table a group of Egyptians were puffing away nineteen to the dozen with no flies on them. Which might prove that nicotine does have its uses - or it is so bad that even flies avoid it. Or that they couldn't taste their wonderful food and we could. It tasted of flies...

That adds up - ive not gone put of my way to test this but insects apparently hate fag smoke, the strange creatures. Sends them mental if you puff at them.

Aren't people with HIV who are on anti-virals pretty much fine nowadays? Whilst taking them their immune system is near normal levels? You are correct that cytokine storms would be an issue for a lot of people which they may no suffer. SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Smoking and nicotine are different things. There are other elements in cigarettes which are also harmful. Still, doesn't seem like a brilliant idea to me. SB

Haven't read the article properly yet, but I believe they are talking about patches, which of course don't contain the lung-damaging elements of cigarettes.

Nicotine isn't really harmful on its own, but it is addictive. Its the tar and chemicals in cigarettes that will fu ck you up. I'm assuming the French are suggesting nicotine in the pure form, not prescribing 40 Camel a day? But then, it is the French.

Was it a pastilla you eat, dear chap? I've made them at home a few times and really enjoy it. As for the OP, I'm making my way through a pack of Gauloises brun as we speak. Good health, all.

The most smoked brand in France is actually Marlboro. Gailoises is somewhere around the 5th most popular. Even Winston is smoked more, Winston!!

Doesn't surprise me (tho the Winston bit does). Gauloises are pretty disgusting, from my distant memories of having tried them back when I smoked. As with Woodbines, which I found far too sweet and sickly. Classic cigarettes were often quite disappointing. Tho I did used to like Camel. [Post edited 23 Apr 2020 10:15]

Remember US Marlboro being very different to - and much nastier than - their UK equivalent. Once swapped an entire pack for two individual B&H cigarettes.

Please don't. I've got two boxes of Winston that have been staring at me for months now and I haven't the heart to smoke them.

No, not a pastilla. It was pigeon - a bird, they keep them in coops all over the place, the Egyptians do, When the pigeons wake up in the morning one them says 'looks like George got going early today. Bit like Fred the other week - actually has anyone seen Fred lately?' So it is pigeon, the bird, with feathers on, and breast meat. Not pidgin Egyptian for a Filipino milk based sweet, a bird, with wings, and a beak. Did I mention it was not pastilla? Enjoy your Gitanes...
