How active do you predict we will be on the signings front? 15:58 - Jul 15 with 2897 views | WarkTheWarkITFC | Given the size of our squad and the wage bill I would not be surprised to get to the start of the season with no additions at all. Can fully see the club deciding we have too many players, being unable to shift people like Nsiala, Donacien and co and going with what we have got. We clearly need a left back and a proper prolific League One centre forward. I'd argue we also need a decent centre back to look to fight Chambers and that's assuming Wolf and Downes do stay. We also have a very thin midfield if we assume Huws and Bishop will be no fitter than normal and arguably we need wingers if Lambert actually settles on a system and that includes them. Edwards should be playing left midfield in his preferred position if that is the case. COVID or not, and I understand the financial difficulties, this is an absolutely golden chance to use our position as one of the biggest clubs in this division (for the time being) to pick up some of the top talent at this level that will be out of contract and I can see us dithering as a result whilst other clubs around us, in worse financial positions, do some good business. Anyone else expect us to be more active that other League One clubs or share my pessimism?

If we are able to offload some senior deadwood I’m sure we will. I think we’ll pick up freebie out of contract defenders ( left back and CB) and pay for a big striker |
Agreed with that, I also suspect that if anyone comes in for the likes of Judge, Huws, Toto etc.. we will waive a fee if it helps get the squad numbers down we probably don't want to pay the contract off if we can get someone to take them off our hands for free effectively.

How active do you predict we will be on the signings front? on 01:22 - Jul 16 by TieDyedIn95 | For me the telling part is the fact we handed James Wilson the number 5 shirt already for next season when I thought he'd had definitely been on the release list, especially given that say, Rowe has been released already, and Rowe had a better season than Wilson. Although you cannot fault Wilson's efforts he is a player who is nowhere near the calibre we would need to really be taken seriously next season and the fact we've not released him, and instead given him a prominent squad number, means were likely going to be using him as a regular again next season. That says to me there is going to be little change in the overall squad. If I were to be brutal I would have released/sold Wilson, Donacien, Bishop, Nydam, Judge, Nsiala, Kenlock and Huws. Maybe Edwards too at a push and the jury is still out on Nolan for me as well. I think the reasoning is simple with much of those, injuries, too many midfielders, personal issues and so on. I don't see them suddenly becoming fit and happy first teamers next season either so i'd free up the wages and get a little extra money for a few players in positions we need. This probably not a popular opinion either but i'd have looked to sign a new established no.1 in goal as even though Holy was the lesser of the two evils last season, he also made some horrendous errors that cost us points and at times him pumping those aimless balls into the stand was frankly embarrassing, so another option would be helpful. A goalkeeper with a cool head and a bit of experience would do us wonders. We need some options at full back, we ideally need a new centre half to play alongside Wolfenden, again someone with some experience and a cool head at this level who isn't prone to monumental mistakes in front of our own goal would be ideal. Our midfield is already too stacked and there are players there who we'll barely get a game out of again next season, and frankly we need a forward, or two who again play at this level, no frills, no panic and is just a natural goalscorer. If we do stay more or less the same with a couple of fullbacks and a reserve forward to replace Keane then we'll finish between 6th and 11th next season. |
Agreed. Still huge gaps in what we need for a really competitive starting XI (assuming Lambert ever finds one) but hard to see us filling these with anything other than freebies given our bloated squad of 40 professional players. We'll find it hard to shift duds like Donacien & Nsiala even on frees as no-one will come close to matching their wages in the current climate. Also, with lower league clubs under huge financial stress, it will be hard to get our young players out on loan unless we don't ask for any of their wages to be paid.

With a competent manager you could very easily select a very competitive starting XI from the existing squad. Ideally we'd strengthen, but there's more than enough about the current squad for it to be competing to get out of League 1. This league is dross.

Yes, with a competent manger.

Which is why, for me, if there's any money at all in the kitty it should go on paying off the manager rather than on more players he can't get the best out of.

How active do you predict we will be on the signings front? on 07:48 - Jul 16 by Herbivore | You've missed KVY and Woolfy from the list of defenders for some reason. Both will be starters. It remains to be seen whether the attacking players you list will stay fit and be used. Either way, none of them provides the kind of outlet we need up front. |
That's because KVY are Woolfenden are comfortably good enough, so I'm not listing them in the list that shows the lack of quality depth. They will only fill two spots, god help us if one gets injured. Quality in depth of defenders is still some way off to mount any top 2 push. If them players aren't used, then we lack an creativity. More than likely they won't be, will be the same old same old wheeled out each week - Sears, Nolan, Judge, and will be a similar season this I would imagine. [Post edited 16 Jul 2020 12:39]

You can't exclude two players who will likely start every week to create a point about depth. Those players add to our pool of talent and someone like Chambers is perfectly good enough at this level as well. Wilson is filler but is adequate as that. Left back is more of an issue I agree but our main problem over the past 18 months has been a total inability to create chances and score goals regularly and that needs to be our priority.

IF being the operative word in the instance of Huws and Toto. One injury-prone, the other a wrecking ball at the back. Plus Donacien and Kenlock. Both as piss-poor as the other.

How active do you predict we will be on the signings front? on 16:05 - Jul 15 by ITFC_Forever | Completely unbalanced squad as usual. Thousands of midfielders, but woefully short everywhere else. |
Only Ipswich could have a gluttony of midfielders and still have zero creativity. Hoping that changes with more appearances from Dobra/El Miz/Lankester/Bishop(lol), but with Lambo at the helm I can't see it.

No you're missing my point here. I know we have two very good defenders there. My point is that we don't have enough quality in depth, and then listed the players who I don't believe are good enough. 2 defenders being good enough won't win you a single thing by the way, you need more than 2. If you are resting your hat on Chambers/Nsiala/Wilson/Kenlock/Donacien to be your defensive options to get you out this league you may as well not even start the season. I'd sign Gnaduillet on a free, suspect his offers will come from higher up the pyramid, I would suspect we have enough options in the attacking areas now if fit, won't be much activity incoming there I suspect.

I'm not relying on those players, I'm relying on those players plus Woolfy and KVY.
