....hence selling Jackson. ;-) I think Jackson is useful to have, but if he was replaced for Walker that might work out ok.

Tyler Walker on 14:38 - Aug 12 by TheTrueBlue1878 | Our owner has taken another financial hit to his business outside of football, another year in the L1 again impacts the finances, no gate receipts for the foreseeable future, a long term contract for Luke Woolfenden handed out. I can't see us shelling out figure for anyone unless there is a departure. If no departure we might get Stephen Ward, and then probably Will Keane will reappear out of the shadows. |
Which League 1 clubs do you think aren't similarly impacted though? If Walker is going and League 1 is the only option I'm not sure why we'd be worse placed than anyone else from a financial perspective. There's the wage cap issue as well of course but that also affects everyone. You seem to be viewing us in a bubble rather than relative to the league we're in. Many of our rivals couldn't afford to complete last season's fixtures, we are comparatively well off.

Tyler Walker on 14:29 - Aug 12 by tractorboy1978 | We now have an actual wage bill and a salary cap wage bill for this season though. In salary cap terms, we could (not that I am advocating selling Jackson): Sell Jackson and trim £113k from the salary cap wage bill for this season Pay a loan fee made up of a transfer fee and Walker's wages (Forest pay his wages still) with Walker signing for us on a free on 1 July - £0 on our salary cap wage bill for this season [Post edited 12 Aug 2020 14:33]

That would only really work if we are the only show in town. Forest wont defer a fee unless its way ahead of the others, or there are no others.

I'd much prefer it if we could shift Norwood as he frees up a fair bit in the wage budget in real terms as well as notionally with regards the wage cap. Think Walker potentially is more of a direct replacement for him as someone who plays right up top and can lead the line. Whether anyone would take him is another story.

Why would they be deferring a fee? The 'loan fee' would be paid up front (or in instalments as most transfer fees are).

I understand that, but can't see it happening, we don't pay fees, remember when we sold Murphy and replaced him with Leon Best on a free.

We paid money for KVY last summer. We paid money for several players the summer before that. We paid money for the likes of Waghorn and Garner the season before that. We don't spend vast sums but ME has shown he's willing to stump up modest fees, especially for players likely to have resale value.

We are in completely different economic times, really we are.

Aside from that being a complete shift of the goalposts, everyone is in very different economic times. The pandemic hasn't just impacted Ipswich Town. Our position hasn't got significantly weaker whilst everyone else is doing better. If Tyler Walker is heading to League 1 the idea that we have no chance of competing with others seems far fetched. Nobody has much money at this level.

You keep saying that, but there will be some very wealthy people making speculative investments at the moment where they see the opportunity to make a return on an investment. The KVY example remains relevant, perhaps even more so in these times. If ME sees the opportunity to speculate and make money, then he may take that opportunity. I suspect Brentford wont be changing their model.

Indeed. Although I suspect that he will simply repeat his very simplistic statement.

Of course the pandemic has effected everyone, of course. Let me make this simple. They are a selling club granted in this scenario, we will not be a buying club this summer. That’s a recipe that won’t work.
