Danny is still with us but I believe he only occasionally performs now because of health issues, and he is 81. I saw him as one half of a duo with Darryl Scott seven years ago at Hebcelt in Stornoway, quietly competent as ever.
He did almost knock my head off once though, I was playing darts in the Foresters Arms, Chelmondiston before an Orwell String Band gig and just as I was teeing up double top a number of shouts sounded. I was surprised to attract so much encouragement but it turned out everyone was telling me to get out of the way because Danny Thompson, who was sitting in with the band, was bringing his double bass through. I ducked just in time.
Orwell String Band eh? Is Pete Croft still going strong? I lost touch when I moved away in the mid eighties.
I moved away a few years before then. I did Google Sean Halfpenny a few years ago and found an online conversation from somewhere on the west coast of Ireland with a well wisher trying to convince Sean that the Gardai were not after him...
As you like John Martyn, I wonder whether you would also like Cassandra Wilson...
Quite a few new cover versions on YouTube to coincide with a new book
[edit] After listening to the Cassandra Wilson I realise she is covering a Robert Johnson song and I have posted a cover of a John Martyn song...but at least I posted it on the John Martyn thread...)

Ah yes, I recall Sean claimed to have certain allegiances! He was the bloke who owned Orwell Books?

Sean ran Orwell Books but I don't think he owned it, as far as Irish politics went he was a member of People's Democracy - a group who sat a little to the left of the SDLP and declared for a non-violent solution in Northern Ireland but a republican solution. I think they only had one branch outside of Ulster and that was in Ipswich.
The name Pete Croft is ringing bells but I just can't place him, was there a Pete Croft Blues Band? Or was he in the Lacey Street Blues Band? Or Animal Farm, in which case I put him and his girlfriend up for a fortnight. And I have just remembered I helped home the singer with the support band to Fleetwood Mac when they played the Baths Hall in the autumn of 1971, blimey.

Yes the Pete Croft Blues Band. Their heyday was before before my time but they reformed circa 1980 and played gigs at pubs etc to good crowds. I dont know if he played with Lacey Street Blues Band. That I think would have been Steve Graham (harp player).
JM is Clearly much loved appreciated. Thanks for tipping me towards other talented artists. I will listen The Jm trail had led me to Nick Drake. So far my fav ND track is River Man.
I suspect you included it as a football post instead of a general post - unless you got the christian name wrong and have just discovered Nigel Martyn...
