Saw him several times at Essex Uni in the 70's when he was a regular visitor. Saw him again shortly before he died at The Colchester Arts Center, he was a complete mess.... RIP JM.
Anyone know if Danny Thompson is still going strong? Solid Air is their best known album and is well worth a listen. Its certainly a unique sound.
Danny is still with us but I believe he only occasionally performs now because of health issues, and he is 81. I saw him as one half of a duo with Darryl Scott seven years ago at Hebcelt in Stornoway, quietly competent as ever.
He did almost knock my head off once though, I was playing darts in the Foresters Arms, Chelmondiston before an Orwell String Band gig and just as I was teeing up double top a number of shouts sounded. I was surprised to attract so much encouragement but it turned out everyone was telling me to get out of the way because Danny Thompson, who was sitting in with the band, was bringing his double bass through. I ducked just in time.

He's still alive.
Apparently his less-known achievements include being on the books of Chelsea as a boy, and playing on Cliff RIchards' Eurovision smasheroo hit Congratulations.

I saw Danny Thompson playing bass for Richard Thompson around 2005. RT's comments about DT was along the of 'he's too good a bass player not to play with and too scary to say no to'

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
I'd just like to say that i I drunkenly clicked 'report abuse' I definelty didn't mean it. This whole thread has send me down an folk-rock YouTube hole.

I only know that from Portishead, John Martyn's voice and the video bring out a different aspect of the song, thanks.
Following on from my endeavours to 'get' Nick Cave, I think have rediscovered Sarah Jane Morris instead. And found some footage of Danny Thompson from last year.
While we're talking about folk music, I'll take the opportunity to give this guy a plug. Ivan drinks in my local.
Gosh, that's restful.
I think Ivan is the elder brother of Kris Drever, another renowned folk singer/songwriter and member of the formidable trio Lau. I couldn't find a song on YouTube that featured both Kris Drever and Danny Thompson (although they have played togther) or a John Martyn song covered by Kris Drever but there is a double bass player in the band members sitting out this number...

And, yes, that is Roddy Woomble out of Idlewild.
According to Wikipedia, Ivan is Kris's dad. I'll ask him when I see him next.

I would imagine asking Danny to play Congratulations isn't a wise move, even with him in his eighties.

That will teach me not to check Wikipedia before I post things, let Mr. Drever know that I enjoyed the short set he played at the Celtic Connections Festival Club in 2014, I think it was.
